i think it is funny because microsoft solved many problems by helping to standardize operating systems on the pc (dos, then windows). then they helped create many problems by not having strict rules on how the zillion different clone vendors and third party addon venders should work with their os. then they helped fix much of that with nt by finally setting those strict rules and testing them for validity. then they relaxed some of those rules with xp (a newer flavor of nt) by allowing some things low level system access for performance (mostly games). as stable as my xp box is, it isn't as stable or smooth running as it was with win2k (on the same exact hardware). and i don't game on my pc...
it seems to go back and forth with them. of course having complete control over hardware and software makes life much easier (as they do with xbox). i'm sure apple can attest to that...
well historically yeah, there is a lot of this kind of crap in the emu, mod and homebrew community but it i would it is an issue because bad news is heard louder than good. i would guess a lot of it has to do with clashing ego's as it does take a lot of time and effort to do this kind of stuff and folks want to be credited for their work.
when folks either don't get credit or get negative attention (for instance kiddies wanting to know where and how to get roms) it usually results in varying levels of a mess running the gamut from closing open development, tantrums and namecalling, to dropping development altogether. of course it isn't always the case but there's enough of it to be remembered...

while a blog could be considered a journal, it appears less so that a blogger could be considered a journalist that practices journalism. interestingly, the definition differs when looking at different english language dictionaries. take for example this one which would seem to exclude most types of blogging without question due to the limits of the media listed...
most magazines that quote prices will also say "price subject to change" or give a closing date for the offer in fine print. this was probably due to court cases over such things...
man, i'm looking forward to mesh technologies to make it to market and become cheap and easy enough for office and home users alike.
my grandfather was the cto for a startup around 15 years ago that had a working prototype mesh system that they had designed for integration into laptops. it had a flat thin sheet that was the antenna that was desinged to sit in the top of the lid of the system along with a relatively small radio to be interfaced with the computer. the mesh routing system was their real accomplishment as it actually worked. however it was a propreitary design looking for a big customer to get behind it and put it in devices. it would be years before something like it hit the market.
this of course was way before wifi and the like but he was part of the 802.11 group during it's early days. sadly, his company never got the funding they needed as the tech was a bit too ahead of it's time and folded...
if you don't want to be flamed by 'fanboys' it would help to cite sources instead of conjecture to prove your point. while i have seen differences in rendering webpages, i haven't read anything that proves one way or another that opera or firefox is more standards compliant, but that doesn't mean such sources don't exist. care to provide a source?
i would guess in addition to that, what does 'more standards compliant' mean (in your book)?
- it complies with more number of standards (CSS, XHTML, etc.)?
- or the standards that it tries to comply with are more compliant than other browsers abilities (perfect rendering of CSS, but it doesn't necessarily support some other standards at all)?
people use the two seemingly interchangeably though there is quite a difference in intended meaning. on one hand a browser might try to support every standard under the sun but it might have quirky issues that keep it from rendering as per spec (either intentionally due to compatibility or simply due to bugs). on the other hand a browser might not support every feature but tries to do the features it does support very well.
it's sort of a crap shoot in reality because all browsers seem to be combination of the two and have problems supporting some features per spec or don't support others at all because standards are in constant flux...
see that j? that means java. you are downloading the full sun java runtime library along with opera. you can choose if you want to download opera with or without it.
try 3.5 MB for opera alone, the rest of that is java...
so back to the issue, opera is 1.2 MB lighter...

here's the thing tho, this hack is rather brutal the way the dude suggests to do it. a more elegant approach would be to take the pin circuit and solder an external switch so you can enable/disable the pin. while you have probably still voided your warranty, it isn't permanently modified, so if you were to sell it later the mod can easily be undone...

not quite the same i don't think, here's why i think this...
they are quite different uses. whereas the major benefit of dvhs to vhs is that it is digital and can record higher def picture the main benefit of the quadro vs. geforcefx is that you have tuned the card to render opengl better vs. rendering directx better.
that is more akin to tuning a truck to pull better than drive faster vs. turning a truck into a sports car...
forgive me for going off on a tangeant, however, i still think your point is relevant but not quite the right example.
i'm guessing that they will probably release a cheaper smaller xbox after they release the xbox2 or possibly around the same time. they may be clearing inventory to do this.
however, my theory breaks down when you look at how soon they are doing this if they are hoping to launch by end of year. i wouldn't think they would want to release a trimmed down version before that as it might eat into sales of the xbox2...
yeah, but try going into your spam box and mass deleting all 11661 messages in it. about 6 months ago i have 70,000 spam messages. it was insane. i had used over 33% of my available space. they recently have seemed to changed it so it doesn't count spam as used space.
also they have done a little better with their spam filtering in that i don't have as much crap ending up in my inbox but there is still too much obvious spam in there. however i have not had a single false positive spam yet and i've had my gmail account since about a month after they launched it.
continuing on the parents question, and forgive me for knowing very little about sms, if short numbers don't work on some providers, i assume that it is because they don't have a translater (i'm imagining a dns like system) to the longer number. if that is the case, then is there a way to find the longer number and use that instead?
yeah and maybe this guy can keep his freakin' mouth shut and not blab about everything he's doing all day long on the web... maybe he'll make it past a month!;p
the most promising thing about restoring technicolor is the fact that it uses dyes instead of conventional processes. the reason why this is interesting is that the dyes used don't break down and fade like traditional films do, which gives it a much better chance of being restored.
if you look at some of these old technicolor movies you might find that the film itself is degrading, but the colors on those reals are as vibrant as ever. technicolor movies tended to be made with a greater attention to detail and the film stock itself tended to be of higher quality as well which is also a benefit to restoration.
first of all most home movies have not been stored properly. even in the best conditions movies *will* eventually degrade (many, many classics have turned into cans full of dust or soup as the nitrate or acetate degraded). i've seen 8mm and 16mm home films that have been sitting in the can too long and are now in such bad shape that they don't want to unwind from the reel or break when they do. the color tends to be terribly faded as well.
doing this at home would be a royal pain in the ass if you are looking to do it right. probably not as hard if you are looking to just watch it on a standard resolution tv and aren't hoping for the best quality (ie, you just want to transfer it to a dvd and aren't going to bother with such things as color correction, jitter, keystone, sound sync and adjusting, etc.), but then what is the point other than to transfer it to a new media?
that's called "synergy", something that jimmy kimmel immediately found lacking when his show first aired. he complained that abc liked to talk about how it was this big company with lots of different divisions and they tried to "synergize" with the rest of the divisions by cross advertising and such. however when he first started getting guests, disney wouldn't allow their top stars (alias's jennifer garner at the time) on the show. he complained of it on his show by saying, "synergy my ass"...;p
heh, i've had the same problem. i find i use those keys a lot when doing a lot of text layout and graphic design work. it's a pain to discover that some keys don't do what you expect them to do especially when they seem to do the same thing across most other platforms. but otherwise the mac is a decent platform once you understand the quirks and intracacies (like any system)...
hopefully big biz will realize that this is the final straw and tell groups like the Parents Television Council to go fuck themselves (in those words). i can understand to an extent being wary of broadcast television being "indecent", but i think things have gone waaay out of hand. and besides, cable and satellite are private networks.
attempting to limit the content on paid television will hopefully backfire on them. it is parents responsibility to monitor children's exposure to "indecency and immorality". i hate to sound like a broken record, but if you don't like it, turn the channel or turn it off. a tv isn't a replacement for a babysitter.
some parents seem to have this idea in there head that if their kid sees a naked body then that kid will somehow become a perverted child molestor when they grow up. i think these folks are so scared that things like queer eye are going to lead to a nation of well dressed lisping eccentrics that want to redress their children and make them join some sort of godless cult...
the reality is that these same people are the ones that are so sexually repressed that they spout in public about how bad pornography and idecency is and yet they are some of the major customers of the stuff. it has always been a wink and a nod between congress, the lobbies that are pushing for decency limits and the lobbies that have a vested interest in the proliferation of adult entertainment from sex and the city on hbo to hardcore porn. when it comes down to it, the entertainment industry and hotels are NOT going to want to lose that revenue. this isn't about being politically correct or indecent, it is about making profits and taking care of shareholders. i think this is likely to be the last nail in this issues coffin...
