what is he being knighted for? hell the EU is trying to prosecute microsoft for screwing customers. i'm not saying ms hasn't done good, but this is kind of stupid imho. anyone going to pie him?
btw, i'm not sure about being born a citizen of the US but you can't have a royal 'title' if you are a naturalized citizen as you have to drop any recognition of royalty if you go through naturalization. anyone know if this extends to citizens born in the US?
you are assuming there are local store alternatives. for instance in upstate new york you don't have the amount of choice you have when you live near a city. the vast majority of the us isn't near a city and as such doesn't have as many cheap cd shops. i think the assumption that folks like you have that all cd's cost $8-13 now is pretty limited in view of geography...
i agree with you but i think there is definitely some blame to go around the music industry for this one. they are trying to muddy up and blur the definition of "stealing" by putting copyright infringement and IP infringement in the same boat by applying the same name to them.
the media picks up on the "stealers" and "theft" labels and runs with them, thus the new definition seems to be born. a similar thing happened to the term "hacker"...
the government itself sees high school and college as a means of vocational training, especially for those that aren't going into a professional (doctors, lawyers, etc.) field. in addition, many people simply can't afford to go to school to learn something that won't result in them having a way to pay it off.
i'm 27 years old. i had a fairly miserable high school life and in my junior year decided i didn't want to go to college because i hated high school so much. now, 10 years after i graduated i am going to enroll in a community college. why? i have 10 years more work experience and a fairly impressive resume compared to a recent college grad, but i can't seem to get an interview. were i living back in upstate new york i wouldn't have this problem, however i'm living in california now. i'm competing with people with mutliple degrees.
i agree with your statement, that people should go to college for learning's sake. however the real world gets in the way of that. i can't afford to dick around at this point. i have to find a major that will result in me having a job after i graduate rather than be back in the same place i started, only now with thousands of dollars of debt...
i have a feeling this whole thing was about dell trying to get a better deal on chips from intel by threatening to start buying some amd. same old crap...
b5 is okay but i quit watching it when it was originally on tv because there was too much soap opera (always a fine line in scifi) and a story line that you would get lost in if you didn't watch the show religiously.
i don't think the show was really geared to the general audience either as many friends of mine who are into light scifi would watch stuff like trek, weren't into b5 at all and actively bashed it.
i dunno, i'm sure i'm missing some good stuff by not going back and rewatching it but i'd rather put my time to use in things that i know i'll enjoy instead of things i might...
dvorak hasn't had an interesting article in years. i'd say he ought to just stop but i guess he'd then be left scratching his head looking for another job he isn't qualified for...
most banks may run ancient code but the hardware is typically fairly recent (though often based on old technology).
i worked for a bank that used as/400's which are based on old tech (but so are todays pc's) and they ran fairly old code. however the machines aren't ancient by any means. those types of machines are designed with this issue in mind and typically don't suffer from upgrade woes as they are highly backwards compatible (this is also an advantage of high level languages).
for instance when the bank decided to upgrade the as/400's from the older cisc based to 64bit risc based the upgrade went without a hitch. in fact the code recompiled on first launch, automatically...
EGM: "Studio Manager" is such a vague title -- can you describe your role at Bungie?
Pete Parsons: I think the main thing is, I am the non-talented person supporting an amazing team of talent, making sure that nothing stands in the way of the team making a great game, and doing good things for Bungie in general. That in itself is made up of a whole bunch of very focused duties helping to make the games we make, and a vast range of unpleasant duties that I'd prefer not to go into. [smiles]
name one that more people have heard of. the reason why it is significant is because it brought the idea to the greater masses.
for instance, grunge music was happening elsewhere in seattle before nirvana made it out of their garage. nirvana however was noticed first and made it big, thus bringing the style to the masses. in the end they are credited for a major change in music history...
what do you think talk shows are for? even fake-news talk shows stay on air by the guests selling something, either a book, movie, music or ideology. thing is most people don't have a problem with it and some enjoy knowing what's happening in pop culture.
it doesn't nesessarily make you a media tool if you don't play the game (by fawning over the guest or what they are selling). it does however get viewers and results in them being able to pay the bills...
yeah, and the rest of folks that want to continue to use xp w/o having to deal with activation will just get their hands on a pirated corporate edition (which doesn't have any activation bs in it) where microsoft has even less control over the activation. seems like a bonehead move to me...
yeah the article linked from this story seemed to me like the writer was bored after everyone beat him to the punch with the latest ipod release story.
backing away is very different from making a no-brainer cost cutting decision like no longer including some cables. there is absolutely no information anywhere that states that the company is moving away from firewire. the reality is that usb2 is more common and windows users are a large percentage of their user base.
this is such a stupid non-issue and it should be treated as such.
next up: Microsoft backing away from pack-in xbox controllers: Xbox is DOOMED!!!
interestingly it says there are "no updates available at this time" right now. perhaps they haven't enabled this yet out of bandwidth concerns, or maybe they are just being cautious about a new update (in case it breaks something)...
not sure what you mean by that. i watched the first two seasons but i quit watching after it didn't seem to go anywhere past being trek-lite with a lost in space theme. something worked though as it lasted for seven seasons...
having the women's knitting league and your basement dwelling son holding your banner isn't the best way to get your message across. i think they'll need to rethink their campaign if we hope to save enterprise...
you looked at screenshots from both games, but have you actually played windwaker? there are so many visual similarities aside from the character (who is very very similar to link) that i can see exactly why they'd get pissed. everything from the little swoosh on the right of 'wiki' to the subtle facial detailing to the general colors of each scene.
while i agree with you in principle, i would like to share my own thoughts on the usefulness of caller id as it stands today. because of all of the blocking that both businesses and people do, caller id has become less and less useful if you use it as a call screening method.
in my case i ended up rarely ever seeing an unblocked number from both people i talk to regularly and places i do business with. in the end it wasn't worth the admittedly small service expense so i dropped the service. frankly, i don't miss it as i now just screen all my calls with the answering machine and all my friends and family know this...
actually it's US $17.99/m for the basic three movie deal, which is a deal for folks that even moderately watch movies compared to blockbuster's prices...
dude if i wanted to pay for broken internet access i'd just unplug the computer from the wall.
i expect that the packets i'm sending should get to wherever the fuck i am sending them unless i'm breaking the law. i shouldn't have to worry about companies having a pissing contest.
the internet that i knew wasn't like this. back when i first jumped on board the net (around '93) it was pretty much deemed bad netiquette for folks to block off traffic unless they were doing something sneaky or illegal. this is really bad news and with precedents like this i fear it will only get worse.

not sure how my comment was moderated "redundant" since it was one of the first to have stated this. but thank you for being a jerk otherwise...

parsons is the bungie studio manager, the guy who makes sure the dev's dont have problems so the games get shipped.

look how well it did for Captain Janeway.

add to that it further brings the apple brand into people's homes via a constant presence on a tv, with the hope that a computer would follow...
no, it'll be called the "sTivo", at least internally anyway... ;p
