To be fair microsoft are going in the the right direction when it comes to security. Moving towards a walled garden and with pro-active security tools which are missing in many other operating systems. Most Linux/Mac machines have little or no software to find infections.

Browse as little as possible. The Internet is a giant data collection tool.

  16. Better late than never, but when that new 'privacy policy' thing came up it kind of looked like they wanted me to sell my soul to them. I never accepted and don't plan to. I wonder how many other people this scared off. GDPR is great. And FB tried to avoid protecting people's privacy by moving millions of people's data away from Europe (Ireland). That alone is a red flag.

  18. Europe is more democratic than the US. Even the European Council is appointed by elected officials. The US has a distorted presidential electoral college system that allows the person with the least votes to win. And that president gets a veto. Hilarious.

Various plugins do a good job of this, but some sort of blocking should be a native optional feature in major browsers. I've already refused to accept the new privacy policy from Facebook as I refuse to let that company turn my data into a product. People let them go to far. There must be an option to choose which companies are not allowed to collect your data, and that's why GDPR is a good thing. Not everyone is allowed to have a custom OS. This is a way to get around this. I installed a Centos VM on my Windows box and within a minute of joining it to the domain I had an IT person asking me why there was a Centos machine on the network. This quite rightly raised a security issue, because they can't just have random machines appearing on the network. However when I installed the WSL nothing came up in that alerting system. So now I can use Linux tools on my machine without registering as another "machine", virtual or otherwise.

I don't care what you want, but I use it so that I can use some nice Linux commands in Windows. For example wget, cloc etc. Those can be installed in native windows, but it's more quicker to install them in the wsl. It's a better version of "command line". Unfortunately I don't get to choose my work OS.

  25. WSL does this much better than Cygwin.
