When all of the college students here on campus had read/write shares on the network, Nimda Spread at an alarming rate, Especially since WinXP Home decided that you SHOULD have your Shared Documents folder open for read/write access after running one of those networking wizards.

I could only imagine the hell a Modified Nimda would be if it can now infect mp3 files. It wouldn't even have to spread infected .eml files anymore. you would just see a new MP3 in your read/write network share with thousands of other MP3's so you would never find it and it would infect all of your MP3's in your read/write network share. Once you open the folder to pick a song it runs and infects all of your mp3's on the PC, then goes out and proceeds to infect every mp3 it can write to on the network that has read/write shares and the process starts all over again while it formats your hard drive 7 days later.

I Figured they would show this series sooner or later, considering that a lot of their series are licenced from Pioneer and all.

For those of you not familar with the series, it's best Described as a Post Apocalyptic Western. Lots of gunfighting, more gunfighting and even more gunfighting. It's an anime that will make the National Rifle Assc. proud.

3 things should be considered about it however.

    1) Vash (the Main Character) is really crazy in the beginning. If your expecting a Cowboy bebop character like spike from the beginning you're going to be disappointed. He gets more serious towards the end of the series.

    2) It's story builds over time. Things will happen that will make you say "How the hell did he do that". Just keep thinking to yourself there's a $$60,000,000,000 reward on this guy for a reason.

  12. Backup questions on Large IDE Drives as Long-Term Archival Media? · · Score: 2

Is stiction still likely occur on newer makes of IDE drives or have manufacturers beaten the problems which caused this in the past?

My guess is that most manufactures have improved on their designs in order to minimize this problem, especially since companies like maxtor have been pushing their 5400 RPM Drives as a backup solution, but there is still a chance that it could happen and for an offsite solution it wouldn't be the best choice

Likewise how likely is bit drop-out and general data degradation over say a 5 year and 10 year period, and what do people think would be the likely maximum feasible time that a shelved drive would be usable for?

I had 30 IBM ps/2 50z in my basement at one time. I think 3 of them had good hard drives. 3/30 is not good odds considering that they are only 15 years old. Newer Drives have improved on these older mediums but they are also more dense, increasing the chance of degradation over time.

Any suggestions as to how would I need to store drives in order to minimize these types of problem and maximise their feasible life as archival media.

Keep them away from heat and humidity and spin up frequently. although some manufactures vary is their suggestions

Basicially, a Hard drive array is a good idea in a daily to weekly backup schedule. especially if they are networked on a rack or in a server and have RAID 5 reliability.

Anything beyond weekly should be done on tape backups. the ATL Tape Libraries are nice rack tape loaders, and are networked.

also make sure that the backup system can be racked. if they can you can put a backup rack in a different networked building from the servers and that could constitute an off site backup in many cases.

When that happens most companies tend to migrate to the most visable Platform out there, which is usually Microsoft. It wouldn't suprise me if in two years Intuit Sues Microsoft for being a accounting software monopoly instead of Intuit listening to their own customers and giving them what they want.

"My prediction is that within three years time, Microsoft will `give away' its operating system to preserve its revenue in the applications business."

I dont think that MS would be giving away the OS, as much as they will be possibly forced to in the Future.

I Still say that the best remedy to the Antitrust case would have been simply to Force MS to GPL OSS all previous, current and Future Operating systems, as well as the software Attached to it, Such as Wordpad and IE.

The reason for this being that for years MS competitors have claimed that MS used it's OS monopoly to create a monopoly around other markets, such as IE or Office, and to cripple products that compete with them. By Forcing them to OSS all OS's, competitors to these other marketrs, Such as Corel Wordperfect, could make their product better simply by Knowing exactly how the OS works, making their product work better with the OS. This also opens up the door to Windows Distrubutions such as the Case with Linux, Creating Competition in the OS Sector, and Creating Better Windows Emulation on Other OS's such as Wine for Linux.

Although I'm sad to see the Anime go from adult swim, I believe it's going for a reason.

The big problem that I saw with it was that CN appeared to take the easiest and safest way out when it came to the shows they selected. They looked for shows that were pretty much dubbed already and threw them into a sat. night block. MGS has been translated (badly) for years now. Yu Yu Hakusho, although translated pretty well, is nowhere near as harsh as the actual show Was.

I would like to see Trigun, Bezerk, Slayers, Lodoss War or Hellsing here, but I know it would never happen and what would happen to it if it did. For Example Trigun has too many guns so you risk some kid blowing his head off cause he thinks he's Vash (Or as I like to refer to it, SKS - Stupid Kid Syndrome). Hellsing Would make the Christian Coailation go Insane, Would be edited to death because of all the Violence, blood and raw gore, and again back to SKS.

Like Cowboy Bebop? Good. There's a boatload of anime that is similar to it. maybe not with the same amount of charm or style, but identical when it comes to the action, gunfighting and the like. The American Viewer Seems to like the "Gunfighting, Die-Hard/Dirty Harry like, action packed, one man killing Spree" genre so give it to them instead of stuff the're not interested in at this time.

Oh. And finally, I know that almost all Recent anime anymore is either a CardCaptor Anime, (YuGiOh, Fighting Foodons, Cardcaptors, ETC) or a Pocket Monster Anime (Transformers Armada, Pokemon, Digimon, ETC). Unfortunatly this stuff is coming over here because it puts SKS to a good use when it comes to getting the Kid To spend their Parents money. Don't Judge anime based on these. There is a Lot of stuff out there that will appeal to just about anyone. You just have to go looking for it.

We know that contact with kryptonite (chunks of his former world) and filtering of the yellow sun's rays, making it a red sun, will drain Superman of his powers. THe question arose, what if someone filtered out the Yellow sun, making it a red sun like his home world, AND had Kryptonite? Would Superman die? Would he lose his powers more quickly? Or would a double negative take effect and he remains unharmed and retains his powers?
