So how will they make this fit with the Classic Trek episode
Balance of Terror, in which we learned that no human ever saw the
face of a Romulan during the Romulan Wars?"
Perhaps no
human that saw a Romulan made it back to Federation space to report
the fact?

public, did he thing that some/.er would be able to glean answers
from a crystal ball or tea leaves?

question isn't on the "ask slashdot" page where you get all sorts of

people have to relearn wiping their own asses. [/rant]
If any VAXs admins are reading this and are preparing to send
their machines to the landfill, why not check to see if your hardware
is on OpenBSD's wanted
hardware list? They actively maintain a native VAX port (and it's
damn good geek karma!)
Actually at work we ran into a situation where we needed Win98. A custom controller board with software is in use off a serial port. The software requires hardware level access to the serial port so Win2K etc was out.
(that's another plus for open source, if we had the source we could modify it for this purpose)
The movie industry just had a billion dollar month and is whining about piracy. The software industry isn't able to continue it's double digit growth and says piracy is due to their failed projections.
Here's a hint: not a lot of people buy software as often as they used to. Old versions of MS-Office are in use around the globe, old versions of Windows itself. Hell, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". People and companies no longer pay the upgrade tax automatically. (not to mention free software and how it's doing.:))
Spare bedroom in Canada.
Must not mind loud music which has been legally downloaded. Should like the occasional smell of pot (which is virtually legal.) Run own mail server with GPG on it. Free spindle of 100 CDRs to first successful renter.
..back in The Day we'd just "cat >/dev/lpt" and do it right the first time. If the client was lucky we'd remove the tractor feed strips off the "cards". Fancy pants, downtown GUIs and pointing and clicking and carousing and hooliganism...
Here's an idea: Don't hook up the phone line to the computer unless you plan on going online
Here's a better idea: download Spybot Search & Destroy and run it. Keep your system patched. Run AV software. Don't run unkown binaries (read:"crap off Kazaa")
That's why OpenBSD's continuous code auditing makes for good security. Everything but the kitchen sink != better. That all said, a sandbox environment allows the developer to make sloppy mistakes, not program better.
Yeah that scares me. Reeves would have made a good replicant in Blade Runner; not too smart, wooden, jerky.. but as a lead role? PKD must be spinning in his grave.
I made a website for my mums boss last year. [...] He was convinced that computers were easy to use, programming is easy and all that crap.
He should have put his money where his mouth and and made his own website. (not that HTML is programming but even that would have likely been over his head based on what you say:) )
Being that
they found these toxins on every computer sampled... As
an aside, does anyone know what causes "New Computer Smell"?
Obviously chemicals but what ones?
Yeah but the Y2K problem was "discovered" way back in the 70s. Banks doing 25 year mortgages in 1975 would extrapolate into 2000 and "whoops!" Any place which had Y2K problems gets no sympathy from me.:P
Income of $16 billion is expected in fiscal year 2005.
By "Income" does he mean "Profit" or is MS actually predicting a 50% revenue drop over the previous year?

Of course I.T. has value, just because everyone has it doesn't make it
worthess. Imagine a new startup that didn't have email and web access
resorting to faxes, snail mail and the library for all its research.
They'd be out of business in no time.
I can't imagine Henry
Ford saying "Horseless carriages have no value because everyone has
them."
Aren't VOIP carriers actually piggy backing on resources provided by the voice carriers in the first place?
If you're using DSL from your phoneco then sure. You have to remember that VoIP goes all over IP. You don't need expensive (and proprietary) TelCo analog switching equipment, just the bandwidth capacity to carry the voice traffic.
If I worked for a manufacturer of the old POTS switching equipment, I'd be getting ready to look for a new job in a few years. Unless moving to the third world to support their legacy stuff is your cup of tea.

Firefox has an extension which does this very thing. Look for "Bookmarks Synchronizer" on the main extensions page.
