Rather than just rant about it on slashdot where a small percentage of people will see it, I'd recommend people send the link to their grandparents on AOL, non-tech friends, et al. Companies don't make such decisions without forcasting the outcome. Throw a wrench in Qwest's gears and spread the word to the masses. Maybe the beancounter that figured this would be a relatively painless sell-out will be on the unemployment line in 2 months...:)
Now, it's like saying, "let's go buy a 16 MHz proc... cause we can." No, it's like saying "Let's use a CPU that will run on minimal power yet provide the processing power needed to control the aircraft." Seriously, running a Pentium with the necessary chipset support, etc etc would need two pilots: one for the plane, one to power the computer.
You can still find Xolox out there, you need a small "patch" to allow it to continue working. Being that it uses the gnutella-net, it's steady as she goes, Cap'n!:)
We all know Apple started the desktop market. IBM just got into it once Apple's hippy founders were gazillionaires. Nothing gets a large corporations attention like money.
Nonsense! Canadian television is usually years ahead of the US showings. I don't think The Beachcombers or Mr. Dressup have even made their premieres there!:)
Interesting idea, and I applaud the developers, but I really think it's not going to make any new Linux users.
Little Billy gets a new WinXP machine for xmas all ready to run *every* new Windows game with potentially less headaches than keeping a Linux box upgraded with the kernel du jour and the patch of the week.
Like it or not, Windows Update is much easier to use for the Unwashed Masses than is cvs (now my FreeBSD||OpenBSD bias is showing:))
My money says it's all because of the September 11 attacks. From being a "cool" thing, companies offering anonymity services seem to be less cool in the eyes of the unwashed masses.
And if you're a regular slashdot reader then you're well aware of the shortage of electricity in the US, that's probably their main reason for objecting to the Kyoto protocol.
There is a good story on CBS about power companies in California holding back power to raise prices.
Macrovision has had copy protection that inserts noise and monkeys with your picture on DVDs and videotapes for many years now. I've used a product called the Sima SCC[0] that removed this annoying feature.
If all the protection does is add noise to music files, then I'd imagine it likely that there's a mathematical method to remove the noise, or barring that just using a filter like the ones that remove LP noise from copied vinyl records.
[0]- I don't work there, I'm just a satisfied customer
Thats not possible. Look how much thicker a coax cable is than a phone line. The bandwidth is tons higher.
That has to be the dumbest statement I've read on/. in a good while. By your scale, I could run 14 gauge lamp cord and get even better bandwidth because it's "much thicker"
If bullshit was gold, Slashdot would be Fort Knox..
Damn you George.. You could have at least had cameos for adults.. maybe Ron Jeremey corn-holing Britney Spears
Alas, that won't happen. We'll see Episode III with Barney or the Telletubbies..
At least we'll still have episodes IV and V. VI? No, you can stuff the Ewochs where the sun doesn't shine too..
I was thinking of the author taking steps such as using different key words for different recipients.
This is a tried and true way of pinpointing the leak.

Re:A 16 MHz Proc?
they made it to the moon on far, far less.
Bastard!
I've had my RealDoll dressed up like her and in that pose around a telepost in my basement!
You can still find Xolox out there, you need a small "patch" to allow it to continue working. Being that it uses the gnutella-net, it's steady as she goes, Cap'n! :)
If anyone has an unwanted RealDoll (preferably unused) feel free to mail me! :)

Requires: Anvil, Hammer, Nail or Chisel.
Locate chip, place bill on anvil. Place nail or chisel on chip. Strike nail or chisel with hammer. Repeat if necessary.
Egad, that translation is only a small step above "all your coffee machine are belong to us."
Nonsense!

a) install a secure by default OS such as OpenBSD
b) LEAVE FTP disabled
c) LEAVE Telnet disabled
d) ENABLE SFTP if you need an FTPish connection.
Live happy and don't end up like LinuxToday.com LOL

And I suppose you don't notice Dick Cheney's hand up Bush's ass.
Bush is the goatse.cx guy?
:)Now when my RealDoll shows up at the house, I can just tell my wife "Damn identity thieves are playing with my Visa card!"
I don't recall any space tourists from Russia going up to MIR.
Seems they have more faith in the new station rather than risking the loss of a citizen in the MIR tin can.
"GRUB, on the other hand, reads the filesystems directly"
I can? Man I'm L33T3R than I thought.
"Where's Clippy?" (P183)
[A]nd THERE IT IS! A monkey is in a single frame, looking straight at you
Funny, I thought it was Tyler Durden. :)
You know what I meant by monkeys with the picture. It just game out wrong. :P

From the article:
[The] spokesman said the Java support in Windows up until now "is a lot of code that many users don't need[..]
Of course Office and Windows itself don't suffer from this unnecessary code bloat, right Mr. Spokesman? The timing of this is suspect, considering MS just announced that vendors would be free to add their own software to the system..
