    Sure contrary examples exist (ie.: I had a 10 Mbit USB ethernet box which OpenBSD worked with just fine but Windows needed an external driver for) What I was referring to were new devices working with older OSs.

    I've seen installs of Windows that lacked the Ethernet drivers for the onboard Ethernet...as well as half the other stuff on the mobo...

    That's why the NIC/video/sound/whatever-card manufacturers include a disc with the drivers. It's hardly fair to expect MS to have drivers on a Windows install disc for a new gigabit NIC released after the OS.

    The Philips DVP642 is quite old now and chokes on busy divx/xvid scenes (helicopter blades, water with lots of waves, etc.) I have one and it's nice for raw mpg files or PAL playback but my main one is now a Panasonic upconverting unit (S52?) and it's much nicer. A few more bucks but nicer playback. For xmas we picked up some newer Philips players that support some new divx thing (extreme? supreme? I forget now) and they were CA$49.99.

    You don't need a cracker. There are several utilities that will zero out the admin password using direct disk access from a boot floppy/CD/USB key.

    True, it's not "cracking" the password but you have a null admin password in just a few minutes. (google for "hiren's boot cd" for one example)

    10/20/30 years from now it is likely that similar circumstances will apear and no one will be better able to handle the situation.

    Well then hopefully people will learn from the history of 10/20/30 years previous. "Don't lie to the people about why you're going to war" might be a good place to start.

    I'm 40 and have had consoles since the Odyssey, probably before you were born. :P

    Unlike yours, my reply had some reason to it: the submitter is 44 and mentioned arthritis. The games I suggested are quite involved, give a lot of game play for the $ and don't require extensive hammering of the controller thus saving his hands. You could probably suggest some fighting games for him but his hands would be crippled in a few weeks.

    Stay in school. You might get an early start on the ones that go to college/university but they'll almost always come out on top in the long run. In 5 or 6 years you might be answering to an old high school alumni as your boss.
