  1. woo hoo DRM consolodation on Intertrust Plans Universal DRM System · · Score: -1, Redundant

This is great. We need ONE end all system that Everyone uses, it should include ALL content and All devices! This is Great. So as hackers we will only need to break ONE system, instead of a bunch of little ones. Sweet.

If you, me and Bill Gates are in a bar the average net worth of people in the bar is a few billion, so the next round is on you? Didnt think so. Including the none file shareing computer users and people that dont have any music files in their statistics is an artificial way to allow them lower the number of files their 'volunteers' need to have to be significant thus making the data inaccurate.

If it forces you to use NTFS then youll have to buy something like partition magic that can handle NTFS volumes. This really isnt a huge deal infact it might only be a problem if you need to 'reinstall' windows as then it will most likly wipe your linux partitions. Of course if you made backups it should be cool.

  7. Cell Phone? what about Laptops, GameBoys on Cell Phones on Commercial Flights by 2006? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Since when did a Laptop, Gameboy or a Walkman become a triggering device on a weapon of mass destruction? I mean if the planes are so delicate should we really be flying in them? If all OSAMA needs is his sprintPCS, laptop, and a walkman turned on at takeoff to bring down a plane why didn't they try it long ago? What would freak out americans more then watching a plane crash every day? And if it was really a safty issue wouldn't they ban them from the cabin.. ala GUNS, KNIVES? The Generic reason given to turn all this stuff off at take off and landing is that it *MAY* interfer with ILS. Now I have a few tips on how to handle this. FIRST upgrade ILS.. if gameboy and walkmans are fuxing it then it needs to be upgraded.. there are several ways to get around this.. I mean if my CELL PHONE can connect me.. with a BILLON other CELL PHONES without jumping on to the wrong call then you think ILS could be upgraded to freqecny hop as well. Second what about some sheilding around the cabin? Wrap some tin foil around the cabin.. that seems to keep the aliens out of my head. Finally don't realy on ILS in the first place.. I know its tough being a pilot these days.. but put the damn drink down.. grab the big dealy between your legs and look out the shiny thing infront of you. If you can't handle it and need to get drunk on a flight buy a ticket and sit in the back with the rest of the damn drunks.

  8. everthing matters on Evaluating a System for Selling and Delivering MP3s? · · Score: 2, Insightful
I think you touched on many things that matter. Price, Format.. but even more rights or site features also matter.
Here are a few ideas that might help you out.
    • Format - mp3, ogg, wmv.. the answer is yes. Why not offer all of the formats.. if you offer one its trival for someone to re-encode to a format they want.. but why make them? It will save you a small amount of disk space in the end.. but possiably cost you users. So the correct answer is to offer all possiable formats at the expense of a little disk space.
    • Price - this is a tough one. I would recomend going with at least two options.. first a per track - with a cut price for full ablums. The second is a all you can eat flat rate. As the recent RIAA articals posted on slashdot we know that artist make next to nothing on their album sales. So why not embrace this, use this reason to keep the costs per track as low as possible.. something on the order of a nickle or dime per track. At that rate you will kill most pirates as it wont be worth it to pirate when you can download everthing for a few bucks and get it quick and clean. Remember your goal is to make keep the serivce profitable and while keeping the artist in the front and getting them gigs where they make the real money.
    • free radio streaming - you should run streaming on the site.. and push it.. with shows.. and user requests allowing communitys to build around the service.
    • real world tie-ins - as part of the communitys you should give presales and promos to community members. Such as cut rate tickets or even garrenteed presales to subscribers. Many people who dont download would be willing to pay a few bucks a month to get them deals on concert tickets. Avid fans would kill for a chance at backstage passes or other common give aways. I mean big acts hand these out to radio stations to give to jacksasses that dont have jobs and most likly never heard of the band. Shouldn't promos go to the real fans?
    • Band sites - as communitys build you should plan to have at least templates for bands to have their own sites including forums and other tools. Another part of this is to have clear rules about fan run sites and things such as art work and linking. If you have the rules clear before this happens youll avoid stepping on toes and pissing off the very people that your making money on. The Rules should not be just donts.. but also do's and things like sources of art work.. and how to link. How to attribute and how to stay legal.

I have yet to see a site that knows whats its doing. Most are crap.. and the few that do something right.. do alot more wrong. The best thing is to remember what the goals are .. and to plan well while remaining flexable. Never forget that your in this to promote the music and build a following.. so the normal RIAA tatics that confront end users dont work so well. Passive aggreive works the best.. give and take.. when you find a person swapping the albums.. show them how to link to your site and program their own radio show and then ask them to stop swapping. When that doesnt work use the good will you have built in the community to put on the outside and watch the peer pressure stop them. Soon the community will be self policeing

Dont be like Darth Vader.. dont squeeze your grip..they will only slip between your fingers.. keep your hands open.. and scoop them all up.
  9. another reason why tivocommunity sucks donkey ass on Pioneer To Release TiVo/DVD Burner Combo · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Jesus christ on a cross. TivoCommunity.com, has huge blackout hole on two topics. First being Theft of serivce. Of course they consider using a tivo without paying for the tivo service even if you dont want the service 'theft of service'. The other verboten topic is recording extraction. This is becouse the Tivo is supposedly terrified of the media industry, but it looks like as soon as a heavy weight wants to build the box all of a sudden the topic is no longer verboten but even part of a licensing deal. That sucks. They have crapped on the tivo users for so long, first stealing all of the good hacks which were free and then locking down the Series2 boxes, just to sell the common hacks to rest of us at a huge price/package (aka Home Media Option). Can someone ANY ONE explain why hacking huge drives into the tivo (something that directly impacts sale prices ) is OK, but extracting the recordings to archive isnt? When buying the tivo your not forced into a contract so why then is third party programming sources illegal? Tivo needs to get back to its roots. Build a kickass machines, and let us geeks have our way with it, we will build new ideas and features that they would have never tought of. Im sure the OSD of callerID was really High on the list for tivo before the hackers got to it. Or the TivoWeb interface was just a step ahead of the offical web interface I mean tivo would had it on the road map.. BS. Just for the record telling us that we arnt allowed to extract recordings for the last 3 years and then signing a contract to build a machine that exactly does that is the biggest load of crap I have ever seen. You should appologize to all tivo owners for being such a group of sell out assholes.

Disk space is cheap.. I mean delete a few prono's and you can have like ever version of MSVC40.dll ever made.. I dont mind
wasting the disk space.. I mind the headaches of shitty little apps that you must have breaking other stuff thats playing by the rules. Maybe instead of keeping a version of each shared object for each application we should just go back to static binaries? I mean is the savings in disc space so much? How many OS's really share code segements between processes? And when they do, how much space do they save with dynamic code and CoW.

  16. New Idea? on BIOS' Days Are Numbered · · Score: 1

In 99 using a Compaq machine that had a graphical boot loader that sat on the HD. This had a simple window intreface to control Hardware configuration and other stuff. While is just felt like windows 3.1, ( a point and click interface ontop of a command mode backend ) it worked ALOT like what is described here. Personally using HD space for the bios sucks. One of the great things about PC's that you can yank out the drives, slap a new one in.. and most of the time boot right up. But now your going to tie the HD to the machine hardware so to the degree of of the bios. And what happens when I dont want to give up partion entry for the bios replacment? I agree that the PC bios sucks.
I much more prefer the OpenFirmware approach, but I think the key here is that the bios(or its replacment) needs to reside on the mother board as thats what it primarly configures. Do you really want your Bios to start tooling around on a NTFS partion to recover the machine ? Shouldnt that be something the OS does? A better bios that could do console on serial/ network addess would be cool. A better bios that could intelligantly pass
paramaters to the system would be cool. A bios thats going to suck up HD space, and fux with the filesystem, no thanks.

While eclitic people may throw a wrench into everything, only a free solution will do. All of the for profit companies will just sell out the to the RIAA cartels.
