This so called 'Theft of service' is completly WRONG. Allow me to use a Car example. If you buy a Ford, you can take it to be repaired at a the ford dealer. Or you can take it to be serviced by the mom and pop on the corner for 1/2 the price, course you could also get screwed at the mom and pop. Did you 'STEAL' becouse you didnt take your car to the ford dealer? Nope. To Steal you would have to get ford to service your car and NOT pay for it, THAT is stealing service. Now when you buy a tivo, its yours, you own it.. you can connect it to a TV, toss it off a roof.. melt it down to recycle it. So if I tweek something I own to work with another serice thats not stealing 'assuming I have legal access to the 3rd party access'. Now if I take my tivo a hack it to recive the TIVO serivce for free, that is left, just if I hacked a ReplyTV to use illegal access to Tivo programming content. Now everyone says.. well.. uh your right.. but 'their buisness model is' you know what F' their buissness model. Just becouse they have a broken buissness model doesnt change the reality of theft. If ford was selling card below cost, but tried to slap you with high service bills would that be ok? Tivo has some good things, and some Bad.. one of the biggest bad things is the false sense of ownership over the device after they sold it. If I buy it I, own it.. I can do what ever I want with it. Now their Content, they own.. course I can always put in my own content and their is nothing they can say about it.

Remember the dawn, great little box that you could hack, run own stream extracting ftp server, hack in OSD of caller ID, hack in remote scheduleing.. just about anything you can think of. Then the suits came out with Series 2.. ugh, no hacking (save bios hack, 2card monty), and then came Home Media Option, or as I like to call it, an over priced package of all the cool hacks we stole from the community and impleneted like shit. Fast forward to today, the hacker community is giving up on tivo, the real PVR hacks are coming out for things like MythTV, Freevo.. etc.. and Tivo has yet to pull out any new features.. wait.. the did add TVGuide ads on everything what a great day that was. Tivo will die mostly becouse the product development has been ignored. There are a few things Tivo could do to save its self. First come out with an HD tivo that supports caputre via firewire, as we are all know FCC has told cable providers they need to add firewire out by april 1, btw the few providers that already support firwire have a great side effect, no OSD from the cable box so the OSD stacking problem is SOLVED. Second slash the price of the Unit to just above costs, if it cost $400~ a unit then they have production chain problems. They should be able to get the unit cost down below $100, do direct sales of $150, but allow retail to carry it at what ever they want. Finally, bring back hacking, put the protectvie seal, add the warnings about voiding wartnee.. yada yada.. but let the community back in to hacking, thats where all the good ideas came from anyways
The easy fix here is if they want it bad, they get it bad. Remove all the monitoring, turn off off or leave you cell phone in the car. Then you might try a 'delicate' server reconfiguration. Now return to your cube and allow the mayhem to unfold. Soon someone will come running 'Email is DOWN' your response 'I didnt know, new policy foribbids me from monitoring the servers' their response 'What new Policy?' now you point to HR. Then 'fix' the problem get email flowing again, of course without monitering, allow it to crash.. by the end of the day they will be begging you to reinstall the monitoring.
How do you control a market? these are not commodities. A user can have all of these, or none, or any combination there of installed. Its not like an OS where the computer is running one OS at a time (side stepping the virutalizaton issue). So install base isnt a zero sum. Now you can distrubte the same content in multiple methods, so again this isnt zero sum. So HOW can you have a market share. Its not like the rating what people are watching as one tv can only be tuned to one thing at a given time (again side stepping PIP). Shouldnt it be the percentage of people that have the compatiable player installed. So for all internet connected client machines, X% have a compatiable WMA player, Y% have Real, and Z% have Quicktime. X, Y and Z have no corelation ( assuming players dont attack each other). So you cant 'control' the market but rather its a progess meter on how well you have been able to penetrate the market. It is completly possible for windows to have 100%, while Real has 100%, and Quicktime again has 100%, that would mean every client machine has all three players installed. If that is the case who has 'controled' the market?
This just proves that you should smack every machine a few times before and after you use it. If you smack it hard enough you get a few spare parts and protoect your credit. I have taken to kicking, shacking, and hitting every vending maching I use in the name of safty. BTW the same thing applies to people, but with them I have found poking with stick to be the best method.
So they think adding more annoying popups to other devices and services will help stop copyright infringment? Ya, that FBI warning in evey video type is a big problem for the pirates, that FF>> button is So hard to push. Of course we get DVD's that force you to watch them, but if you backup the dvd with a little IFO hacking you can remove the warning. That is if your not luckly enough to have a player that ignores the user prohibition codes. Why not instead of spamming us with more useless stuff they figure out away to encourge us not to want to pirate the content in the first place. Like Sell cut rate on movie tickets or early sneak peaks if you buy the DVD up front. Or other real world advantages. Sooner or later these companies are going to see that forceing the status quo is tilting at windmills, they need to learn to innovate and get people excited about buying their products instead of being viewed as a nesicary evil to recive any decent content
And before that it was AT&T. I mean they even had the deathstar as their logo, how could you not hate them. Dont forget they started all of this sue of unix, get ass haneded to stuff
Why exactly do I need to be root to send mail? All i need to do is open a connection to some mta on port 25. That does not require root privilages. Do you need to be root to run elm, mutt, pine, evolution, insert mua here? No you may need root to do other evil things like insert the worm into the boot process, or hide from the process list. But in reality these thing are over rated, if your someone who excutes attachments are you going to pay attention to the running proccesses? And if you never reboot your *ix box does the process really need to be started on boot? There are many problems with windows, LookOut and other programs, Mydoom didnt take advantage of these, it used the most obundent resource available on computers, stupid users.

port scan attacks (AKA brute force), instead of scanning just code up a program to attempt all permatations of knocks, sure it will take a while.. but sooner or later it will work
sniffer, all you need to do is sniff one person with the knock and whamo you know it. Chances are the lamo that uses this isnt going to change the knock.. not ever (as he will prolly hard code the knock into his client app). So once you have the knock bam your done.. now just break his password..
Postage? Ya.. that will stop spam. Lets look at this
Online porn makes more memny then anything else
Porn and other similar industries produce the lions share of spam
Good content, is mostly un-funded list servs, yada.
Charging for email (postage) will only insure that all email is spam as the average user wont send email but the spammers who are making money will be happy. It will Legitmize their buisness, and they will just incure another buiness expense which they will pass along to their clients. This has to be the worse Idea have heard in a while. The real solution to the spam problem lays in two areas. First stopping spoofing and forceing people to own up to where email comes from thus making filtering rules trival to implment. The second way to stop spam is to punish the people that use it. All of the fly by night websites that sell porn, herbal vigra.. and mortages should be put on an FTC hit list and punished publically to teach others that 'viral marketing' is really a virus that will snap back and kick your ass for unleashing it.

Now it seems that trade groups with the threat of legal action impose a tariff on companies they dont like. Couple this with the recent news that the RIAA is building a shock trooper squad and it becomes obvios that the Publishing groups are no only producing media, but rather inventening their own goverment system to steal the rights from citizians of the old system.
people that hate the cell phone hate it for all the wrong reasons. Most wouldnt mind it if they bothred to learn how to use it. My father bitches that his battery dies.. but then if he would use the key lock he wouldnt have 90 minute calls to my answering machine becouse he sat on the phone in a pub. Another reason people hate it is so many people own them but dont leave it on or check voice mail reguarally. We are so conditioned that batter life is measured in nanoseconds that many of the luddites just leave it off. Thus turning the device into a one way communication tool. Also the haters bitch that they here ringngs in movies or other places, if people would put the thing on vibrate it solves this problem. Finally we dont people bitch that they are forced to listen to half a conversation as someone yells into the handset, the point here is that people with their voyerstic tendancies are just pissed they cant get the whole conversation. You want an gadgat that sucks, fax machines. They use technology to hold us into a 18th century paper world. Stop enabling the dead tree mearchants! Death to the FAX!
Well you can download a tank of gas? You see all of these other examples work becouse the shipping costs out way any possible advantage of pricing. That is to say even if you save 3dollars a gallon buying in the US, shipping just one tank of gas cost you more then if you just pay the overcharge in europe. Also most of the overcharge is due to taxes, so if you import the customs agent is going to ask for his tax money. Now the net doesnt really have customes agent. So people in.UK could just buy albums in The US site and download the content directly paying the US price. Cost of distribution is nill on the net, while in meat space it keeps you in line. Similarly we in the US should just use the.CA music as its cheaper then ours. I think the true solution is a single global monetary system. All of these exchange rates just play on old world devliery systems, in a information age they are a relic. To combat this system lets just setup a company in what ever country has the cheapest music, use it to proxy all purchases no matter where the end user lives, thus everyone gets the same lowest price. Sooner (rather then later) the content providers and merchants will figure out they need a single price for everyone in this single information system.
Am I the only one that thinks MS needs to rename this product. Lets think about it Windows Services for Unix, doesnt that sound like it should be samba.. or something that runs on a unix machine that provides windows services? Really the kit should be called Unix Services for Windows, that makes it sounds like what it is nfs and the rest of posix that windows is missing. The only way it makes sense with their wording is Windows: Services for Unix, but that requires punctuation that everyone has seen fit to drop
Jebus, we need to unleash the pain on these feds. What are they going todo when we start running ipsec tunnels for all our voip connections? What is more scary? The fact that they want to do all of these big brother things? Or that the old techonolgy systems allowed them to do these things?
There is a very easy way to stop this. We need to relize that the RIAA-police force are just a bunch of hired private thugs. That said they can not represent themselfs as police officers. So I suggest we start a spot light compaiegn. We should hangout where they work, and follow them as they do their job.. perfectly legal. Then we publicly and loudly heckle them as they attempt to raid, at the same time we inform the victums that they are victums and call the real police, say the victum belived these were some kind of police officers and file a report that leads to a complaint as impersonatinting an officer. Nothing stops unpopular vigilatism faster then a large public glare.
Ok, I think this has been some time coming. But since so many of us get most of our news via the web I think we need new journalistic guidelines for the web. Writing up a story an not providing a link to the site that the story is about is just unaccaptable. If the site contains adult material note it, if thats not good enough maybe they shouldnt be doing the story. With so few major media companies playing such a large role in offline and online publication we need standards to keep them honest. We need to start a campaign at the universities to install standards. If the schools sign on, the media outlets will need to follow suit or by definition they are un-professional.
This so called 'Theft of service' is completly WRONG. Allow me to use a Car example. If you buy a Ford, you can take it to be repaired at a the ford dealer.
