How would Slashdot be forced? Why would a European law have jurisdiction in the U.S.? I suppose the EU could begin blocking sites that don't comply. Some sort of Great Firewall of Europe I suppose.
I do not think any should be attributable as damage caused by Swartz and here's my thought behind it. If I break a door lock I can be held accountable for replacing it, however I cannot be held accountable for the need to add a dead bolt just because the previous lock didn't stop someone. In the same vain, he could be held accountable if he deleted files or otherwise caused damage, but shouldn't be held accountable for any additional security added as a result.
Memory argument aside I don't think it's taught well. In many introductory science labs, students fudge the numbers to make the experiment come out right. I always seemed the only voice in the group that insisted we should use the numbers we got and write ideas or a hypothesis to explain why it came out wrong in the summary. Sometimes I got my way and when I did we got an A. It's not that the teachers won't appreciate it, but it isn't really stressed either. At least when I was school many moons ago.
Unfortunately, the people are divided along those lines because thy are followers. Once people get behind Team A or Team B they all of a sudden believe and follow everything on that team. It's ridiculous and I've actually seen people completely change core beliefs once they join a team. There are few people that can support the ACLU and the NRA. So we have two parties that pick different Amendments and then defend their own and attack the other's. And a third party that supports the separation of church and state as well as the freedom to bare arms, well, that's just crazy talk.
I'm not sure he was making money from it. From the looks of his site he doesn't even have ads*. In any event, I'm okay with copyright (I may think it's too long right now but the idea is valid IMO). In this case though, I think Toshiba would be wiser to let him do what it does. They could create a license for their manuals that allow this type of thing if they're really worried about defending copyright. And freedom to choose, means that people can choose not to buy Toshiba because of this. Since companies exist to make money, boycotting them when you disagree with a policy is one of the best ways to influence their behavior.
*He does have a donate button. I don't think that means his site rises to the level of a commercial enterprise but I wouldn't defend that position if you disagree. But I would still think it in the interest of Toshiba's customers (and Toshiba) to let him do this.
You're way under the average for the U.S. then. In 2010, the average annual electricity consumption for a U.S. residential utility customer was 11,496 kWh
That's kind of the point. The whole thread is about whether one would call android linux and the poster I replied to was pointing out that Windows Phone has an NT kernel but it's not called NT. It's a terrible example since MS calls everything Windows regardless of relation.
Windows Phone uses the NT kernel but you don't see anyone calling WP7 "NT".
You're kidding? I'll give you a hint. Windows Phone, Windows NT, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows RT, Windows ME, Windows CE, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95 etc.
Large companies are complicated. AT&T for example recently posted $3.64 billion profit on $31.46 billion in revenue. Compared with the quarter before where profit was $3.62 billion (slightly lower) on $31.48 billion (slightly higher) in revenue. Two things to note. First is that cost in each quarter was different by about $40 million. Second is profit went up when revenue went down. New customers cost more so slow customer growth meant decreasing revenue but increasing profits. To make matters more complicated this is all while carrying $64.5 billion in debt.
At some level it's obviously genetically related. Now whether you live up to that potential will depend a lot on nutrition and environment through development. The reason I say genetics play an obvious role is because genes can certainly cause mental disorders so it has influence.
Google or Slashdot? If you try to alter it I believe Google gives you a redirect warning. But as long as you can find your site through Google you can create a link that looks like it goes to Google but goes wherever you want.
Yes the Constitution calls for the federal government to have a military but that is not the same as calling for our military expenditures to equal the rest of the world combined. Nor is to have a military base in half the countries in the world. Nor is it for us to constantly be at war without ever declaring war.
Medicare and Social Security are not in the Constitution at all. Yeah, people have paid in, but if you're not willing to ax it then you're not really for small government. Regardless of what marriage means historically there is no basis in the constitution for the Federal government to define it. Regardless of what drugs may do to someone there is no constitutional basis for controlling it. In fact, one has to wonder why prohibition of alcohol required a constitutional amendment but prohibition of drugs do not.
For all of your arguments, none address making the government smaller. The military, Medicare and Social Security are what make our government large. You can cut welfare, head start, school lunches, the interstate system, Nasa and whatever else you want but until you start talking about cutting the big three any rhetoric about small government is disingenuous.

If you hit alt enter instead of just enter it will open another tab. Also middle click will open links in a new tab.
No one is trying to teach evolution in church. Plenty try to teach religion in science class. How do so many people not understand the difference?
The really sad part is that they will blame it on secularism. There will be calls for more religion.
What was your second question?

Some may say "but they learn it in school"

That's nonsense. It's the flying spaghetti monster. You heathen.

If they can just lay off workers why did they have them to begin with?

Yes but it wouldn't be very bright for a business to have an unlisted number.

Being on Slashdot for a while I am torn between a lingering dislike of Microsoft and disagreeing with articles :)
Every time I see your sig I picture Jesus riding down the highway on a moped.
Just out of curiosity why would buying a new router fix the problem as implied by the article?
