There are Apple fanboys too. And yes, sometimes Windows actually *is* a better choice, although thankfully those special cases are becoming fewer and fewer as time goes on.
Case in point, it appears that VISTA is actually the best OS to run on a tablet with wacom support. XP tablet has had some driver issues, and was never built for a tablet, just had support put in after the fact. My tablet works great with Vista/onenote combo. I really wish I could see how fast this thing would be with Kubuntu, but I could not find any solutions even close to the convenience of Onenote running on vista.

So what your saying is, this interface bears too much resemblance with an interface designed by User Interface Professionals with near limitless funds to spend on research. Why don't they just make up something new based on the potentially faulty domain knowladge of the programers instead?
If it is such an easy fix, and it bothers you that much, make an open offer to pay someone like $20 to fix it. In fact, it would be nice if there was some official way to do this. Say you, our a company wants to see some bug fix or some feature added to some open source project, it would be great if they could just easily make an offer to pay someone $X to get it in.

Thats good. I am an awful speller, and I have many times had to resort to using the spell checker in Gaim in order to find the correct spelling of a word I can't spell. Hopefully OOo will be able to do as well as my instant messaging client.
Anyone know if KDE/Gnome or even Xfree is planning something like this?
Here is a link to how to very easily get KDE to have its own little "start new session" button. Took me about a minute and a half to set up. I hear Suse has this working by default, and I would bet that Mandrake and Redhat will follow suit soon, given how easy it is.
If you want a good media player try Mplayer with all the codecs correctly installed. There are some legality issues with including this in the main distribution, but the Penguin Liberation Front has got that covered. Once you got Mandrake 9.1 installed, just type the following as root at the prompt:
urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/plf/9.1 with hdlist.cz urpmi mplayer
wait a bit (maybe hit "Y" twice) and then you will have your ONE media player that works with everything. easy.
urpmi and texstar are the reason that I absolutly LOVE mandrake. For a while after I installed 9.1 there were a bunch of things that just weren't working right, and my kernel source was out of sync with my actual kernel so I couldn't compile some drivers (like my linmodem driver) - in short, it sucked. Then I found easy urpmi which help me get urpmi up and running, including Texstar's rpms. Well, now my system is running the best it ever has in my 6 years of running Linux. That Texstar guy, he must just sit around all day adding cool new goodies to his RPMs, I swear he comes out with updates faster than my poor modem connection can download them!
If you obtain a trade secret, and you know its a trade secret, it doesn't matter how you got it, its still misapropriation on your part. The only way to legally obtain a trade secret is to have the owner give it to you willingly (not likely), figure it out yourself, or come across it WITHOUT THE KNOWLADGE that it is a trade secret, AND then invest money into it BEFORE being informed that it is a trade secret.
For those of us not leet enough to notice the font deficiencies, can someone post a side by side screenshot of a common "crappy looking fonts" in X, and how they should look (from windows or OSX)?
I just went to K->Office->wordprocessors->KWord and started Kword. (Thats where my default install of mandrake put it) I then typed sum stuff, went to print and selected "Print to file (PDF/Acrobat)." Can't get much easier than that I would think.
Anyhow, KOffice is an office suit I would like to see get more attention, as it can be so easily integrated into other KDE applications. Unfortunately my last experiances with it (one release previous to the current release) left me a bit miffed, as it didn't actually PRINT the way it was formated on screen.
This would be great, but somebody with a massive amount of bandwidth better be hosting OpenOffice.org if an ad like this was run. Downloading a new copy of mozilla is already hard enough when slashdot lets its relatively small reader base know about it.
Anyone notice the comercials that just started playing for the NEW version of MSN, simply called "MSN 8"? Hmmm, now I admit I have no idea what version they were on before, but it seems a little suspiciouse that MSN 8 is being released on the heals of the new AOL version 8.0. My only real question is, why didn't MS go ahead and call it "MSN 9" just to get one step ahead?
Then there's wireless networking. Oh by the way, you have to become a kernel compile afficianado to get these wireless drivers workers.
I plopped the Knoppix 3.1 CD in my drive, booted my laptop, and surfed the web on my wireless card. Easy installation of wireless network cards CAN be done, it just usually isn't. (yet)
Think about the level of difficulty you had finding and accessing content a few years ago, compared to our broadband, post-google era..
That was my initial thought as well (when I heard this statistic about a year ago when it was actually current). However the statistic shows a 7 minute drop over a one year period. (march 2000: 90 minutes, march 2001: 83 minutes) Both google and broadband were widly avalable in march 2000. Although increased bandwidth over one year may account for some of it, I do believe that there was really a drop. I don't, however, believe that it makes a big difference to anyone.
All I need in this case is to hear "penny a page" and I've pretty much got my opinion
it is very likely that some erstwhile Slashdotter is going to post a good summary or highly relevant insightful information as part of the discussion
I wish to thank you. You have served as a strong reminder to me as to why I don't usually read the comments posted about the articals. I personally like to keep an open mind, and try to keep my ideas and opinions based in reality. Skipping the artical, and just listening to the SLASHMOD to form all my opinions would not help me do either.
Of cource, a huge amount of very useful info is stored on secure sites. Guess lynx is ok if you are just looking for publicly available info. Try doing anything Productive, and you are outta luck.
People keep saying that a new machine will be hit in 10 minutes. But I have had an apache server running since this started, and I have not seen a single log entry with a bunch of "XXXX"'s or "NNNN"'s. The interesting part is, it is on a college campus (which has a large summer student population). Given that all students are required to own a computer, and most of them leave it on all teh time, why haven't I seen a huge number of hits???? Anyone know?
I use office because I really feel like if there is something I want to to, it has a way of doing it. And generally its not to hard to figure out. I have used star office, ABI word, Koffice, and always found that it was burdensome, both to my computer, and to me as the user. So why should I use a second rate program, when I have Office, which has always been 100% reliable for me?
The answer? I am not going to go pay $100+ bucks for it. Its just not worth it. I have a copy of Office that came in my laptop. But when its time to get Office XP, I won't be "upgradeing." And since I can't just "borror" a copy from a friend, I will probably just switch to useing Open Office. I have a feeling that when many people find that in order to start useing the lates MS software, that they actually have to BUY it, more people will start useing Open Office.
I don't get it. I just downlaoded the "official, fully functional AIM client" from AOL. Well, not only is it not fully functional, but there is no ad banner on it. So why do they want me to use THERE client?

You mean like the Open Source friendly Neuros 442 Digital Media Player/Recorder?

I got to wonder if he ever got the old "send this to all your friends and Bill Gates will send you $100!" email.

If you are worried about aspartame try diet right soda. It uses splenda.
I have tested it today and it's *the greatest Mandrake release ever*.
Ah, good to hear they haven't been spending all their time makeing it worse than their previous releases....

You need to read the actual review. The little blurp here on slashdot is worthless.
