Unregulated taxi environments always lead to violence and a poorer experience for the passenger.
Excellent mentions. Sounds like a lot of third world countries where it's difficult to do planned business because everything is a wildcard and/or have to pay off various people along the way (and "rules" keep changing).
Cubans selling those carefully maintained classic cars to US collectors for a half mill apiece.
Probably not. An AP article on yahoo news last week mentioned all those classic cars may not be worth much. Reporter got a ride in a 1958 Chevy with a Peugout diesel engine. Of course that makes the car very unique. Lots of luck getting it into US unless you go through horrible bureaucracy to convince Customs Dept the car will never see a road and will always be on display some place.
It seems every day there's some breach where millions of people are affected. It seems like same ol' same ol'... like traffic accidents typically not reported.
I'm sure this subset of congress doesn't have more important things to do, like working on getting better schools in impoverished areas.
I always thought this "companies should hire more African Americans" is bankrupted because many people in this demographic grew up in poor neighorhoods and poorly performing schools. By the time they are 18, they are no match to others that grew up in affluent neighborhoods (and with parents and their friends where they can learn customs and nuances of successful people in the tech industries). Of course they can start at the bottom taking courses at JC though difficult when having to work three minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet.
Apple is a for-profit corporation. They are not racist. They care about profit.
And many of these companies have billions in cash reserves but constantly shake down the system for more tax breaks or other means to avoid paying taxes. Result are places like East Palo Alto sitting between two wealthy companies that are virtually cities of their own.

In the movie about MacArthur (portrayed by Gregory Peck), after reading the message about the Bomb, "months of planning [on invasion of Japan mainland] all for nothing on this.. this.. apparatus!" An aide asked the general, "What if it doesn't work?" MacArthur replied, "what if it does?"
Excellent essay, I wonder if you have good speaking voice and take up a position on Comedy Central, good humor with factual info (but one detail incorrect 2001 Crown Vics are from the Bush era, not Clinton, though the Ford CV didn't change much from late 1980s). One thing for certain, like a 486 machine, such a vehicle will never get hacked (why would anyone want to?).

I think in general people not old enough to been in WWII need to put themselves in the mindset of 1945, this was total war. Any and all means were used to defeat the enemy. A-bombs were another weapon in the arsenal. Also back then the military effort was a Machine. A recent documentary described Truman didn't really give the go to drop the bomb, it was a process already in motion. Truman decided not to interrupt it.
What we didn't really know is there were some in Japanese govt that wanted to surrender but others that refused. I don't know much but there was a group that attacked the Emperor's castle to prevent him from giving a surrender speech. Emperor's guards were able to stop that attack. If they didn't, would more nuclear bombs be dropped?
War is bad, but we glorify it with movies, games, and provocative political speeches. Of course those that yell the loudest are not the ones that have to do the actual fighting.
Free parking leads to tragedy of the commons? Whenever I go to downtown SF, I note a few parking garages that are easy to enter and exit. And I accept that I will have to pay $20 or more to park there. I never never think of finding free parking as takes a lot of time, increases my anger, increases chances of traffic collision or worse hitting a person. Yes, parking can be expensive in SF but I usually be spending a lot more of wherever I am doing in that city. Phew, at least I don't have to work there.
You do understand that ocean currents are not straight lines, right?.
My favorite example is the shipping container full of rubber ducks that an oceanographer tracked for 15 years!
that is very interesting. I wonder if oceanographers typically do this with other objects but this one used those 28,000 rubber duckies as a unique opportunity. Maybe they will consult with oceanographers that have maps (even if they are rough sketches) of Indian Ocean currents.

kind of like you can make tons of money at Burger King, Taco Bell, McDonalds, but not burger flipping or working the cash register. Same for gas stations, don't be the one working the counter (or pumping the gas for states that prohibit customers pumping gas). Where you want to be to get the big bucks is high up in a skyscraper someplace far, far, away from the delivered product.
I want to add if the rains never return to Calif, this will be very serious. I agree the climate is changing and if people want to deny or argue against... but again if the rains don't return? Why are we having arguments about climate change?
your story reminds me of so many buildings with goofy HVAC systems especially older buildings when the boilers go down, building will get hot and humid. Or in winter very cold. Geez why not replace it. Whoa not so fast don't have the money (even though lots of budget for software licenses which total cost accumulates to sky-high pretty quick.) At a ASHRAE meeting talking with a few people I realized not many people outside that organization knows how to properly design HVAC systems. Or when it is done, there is a non-HVAC person will compromise original design.
stop letting them destroy the middle class by using "wedge issues" to distract you. They want you to vote R or D to "protect choice" or to "stop abortion", or to "protect marriage equality" or to "preserve traditional marriage" but the reality is that these things are all being decided by judges in courts and the politicians on both sides
It's the "guns, god, and gays" issues brought forward by politicians as these are emotional hot button issues for commoners but there are larger issues that effect wages, jobs, health care, environment, infrastructure, etc.
while Trump yammers about Mexico. I see so much about Trump in the news while this island building has been major activity for some time, all part of plan to "extend" territorial boundaries of China. Glad to know we got our priorities properly set.

A vanishingly tiny % of people in this world buy cars primarily based on their "fun".
Occasionally I see articles about "how fun it is to drive cars" which I think the last time I had fun driving a car was way back in 20th century as a young dude going "cruising and looking for chicks." I second your comment and I don't give a hoot about how fun it is. Traffic is slow, congested, PITA when I have spare time it is not about going "cruising," it will be going places to meet and interact with people, or viewing nature. Exception would be dealing with chores and repairs at home. I sure not going to spend time in the damn car!
Good comments you wrote and yes, probably someone trying to boost stocks or sales. Reminds me when wine sales are down, articles appear from physicians about benefits of a glass of wine now and then.

I miss it as well. I remember it didn't seem to do much of anything but it made me feel like a Viper pilot on BSG (original series).
