The best way to deter Indian criminals is to put them in Federal pound me in the ass prison! Of course there might be some international treaties involved. But one passing mention during employee training sessions about one of those Tejas prisons will turn most geek/call center humanoid blood cold everytime they think of stealing!!
"The thought of building a 10,240-processor system in a little over three months was something, especially since we still had to meet our normal manufacturing pace," said Dick Harkness, vice president of Manufacturing Operations, SGI.
Perl Hacker -> Camel on a Glider Python Hacker -> Python on a Glider BSD Hacker -> Demon on a Glider (not that it would do him/her too much good) Linux Hacker -> Penguin on a Glider
Well yeah you get the idea. The point is you are a hacker when you wear a camel T-shirt or for that matter any of those logs above and a thousand more! Hacking is a frame of mind.. more like zen and like zen, there are so many ways of expressing this. Hence so many symbols. Well it makes some sense to call yourself a "generic" hacker. But today I might be coding away on my mac and voila tomorrow I am a Linux hacker or a clueless wannabe hacker looking at my car's 710 lights:-). As far as the glider in the game of life goes , it pretty much can mean anything and everything. In that sense that might substitute for a Hacker logo. On an imaginative day, I can make it sound cool. The idea is good but I bet, there will be a hundred more out there before you can say Glider !
The Honchos sitting up there have no idea of the power of the Internet and the repercursions of blocking such a widely used site like yahoo groups. I did contact my friends in India. They said it was back online after a day or so. Of course for a democratic nation like India free speech was taken for granted until today. The infamous declaration of Emergency by Indira Gandhi in 1975 plagues the Congress party even today. Funny, a lot of the leaders in the ruling party found themselves at the receiving end of the stick back then. Time really does make one forget I guess. Anyway let us see how the "democratic process" pans itself out on this issue. The US found its own achilles heel in the Patriot Act. So moralizers beware.
Its eastern India. Please Read article first. The article also goes on to say that the only living creature to be harmed by a meteor in recorded history was an Egyptian Dog which had the misfortune to be at the wrong place at the wrong time:-) . This happened in 1911 BTW.
If you guys choose to argue the case yourselves in court there is a good chance you would win. BUT even if you lose, a lot of good might come out of it. This would definitely become a landmark case against using text, images and forms in the internet. So at the end who looks like the one caught with their pants down ?
Our beloved patent office who handed over the patents!
All you losers in the US... I can only pity you. As long as such foolish patents are not recognized in more developed parts of the world, someone is relatively safe(r).
Just say Linux is 10! or maybe wait till next year.. Gawd Im sick of being told for the 100th time on slashdot that Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today. Linux is 10 today.
I am working as a Network Admin in a High Energy Physics Lab. This summer we have a couple of high school physics teachers who came over to do some research. We were talking about the computing facilities available in high schools. David was quite happy with Windows and Microsoft office loaded on all the 400 computers in his school. The reason being, the licensing fees for office was "only" $45 per machine, around 10 times less than the commercial value. Let us say that MS gives away the OS at a modest rate of $5 per machine to schools. At this point you can calculate the cost incurred by say 5 such schools per county, 400 computers each @ $50 per machine... Multiply that by 100 such counties !!
Anyway cost is just one of the factors. What I am wondering about right now is - What if there was a Linux distribution customised to the needs of school children? For starters, we need
* A GUI like KDE or GNOME, both rock IMHO
* An office package KOffice or StarOffice
* Something that can help in publishing their Daily/Weekly magazine
* A package to draw pretty pictures with
* Easy Connectivity to the Internet
* Some Math packages
* more ideas...
What are your thoughts on this? In case you are still wondering about the cost, it comes to $10,000,000 (I think this is a very conservative scenario)!!
I am happy that IBM is adopting Linux in a big way. Obviously it has made a lot of business sense for a company in the business of making money. Alphaworks was a big step towards opensource from IBM (but didn't make it anywhere close.. thats another story anyway). Here is the question.
What kind of products are you planning for the linux platform? Do you plan to have different licencing policies for different customers? If so how do you look at customers( eg. Research, corporate, blah..). Would all products developed by IBM for Linux be opensource?
Finally, Has IBM considered bringing out its own Linux distribution?
Thanks
Having worked (and survived) in a corporate environment for a number of years, I feel it is a good thing that flame wars are fought in the open. I have seen really shrewd managers finding scapegoats with ease to save their own asses a lot of times. Thats another plus for open source!
While distributing python programs, if python programs are compiled to PVM (like JVM), why do we need python installed to run the application? All we need should be a bytecode interpreter for that particular platform. Right?
I have experimented with jpython/Swing, Tkinter, java/Swing and Visual Basic. Due to some reason or the other I have always ended up using the last two options, though I always use python for all other command line programs. My dream application is a la java/Swing style Delphi + Python which ofcourse is as portable as any python program. Why is such a product not there in the market yet?
Well... India has already built and launched a lot of geostationary satellites. What India lacked was the capability to take these satellites to the geo synchronous orbit! All previous satellites were launched by French rockets. Hence this launch is essentially a test of India's "launch capability" and hence the stress on ROCKET!!
Excellent Points!
Err.. Who do you think needs the Code4Food contest more? The devs in India or US? :)
I wish I could give it a +1 Redundant :)

come on guys is IEEE run by the US govt? This is an insult to researchers in the rest of the world. My membership is out of the window for sure.

Man was created by God right? and if all these huge creatures were around, "mensmeat" might have been the prime delicacy in those times!
