  2. HD 137 GB on Maintaining Windows 2000 for the Long Term? · · Score: 3, Informative

Windows 2000 does not support drives > 137 GB. I just reinstalled Win 2000 on an (older) box with a 200 GB drive. It reported the drive size as 137 GB. The C partition (20GB) was fine, but the D partition (180 GB) was inaccessible. It suggested I run diagnostics. Fortunately I did NOT do this. Instead I installed Service Pack 4 and then did further upgrades on-line. It first required me to manually upgrade to IE6, and then install the MS BITS update package followed by 50-60 patches. Several reboots were required. After that partition D was fine. I did a quick Google and learned that running a file system check before the SP4 install would have completely corrupted the partition. So, maintaining Win 2K systems is already somewhat painful. As MS removes support, it will become more so.

Or parents could accept some responsibility in raising their kids. I've got NO problem with laws requiring ratings for games. Beyond that it's up to the parent to make sure that their kids don't play inappropriate games. A pre-teen playing GTA? Where'd they get the fifty bucks for the game? How come Mom and Dad aren't paying attention to what their kids are doing? Legislation is no substitute for good parenting.

  4. Nonsense on Do Electric Sheep Dream of Civil Rights? · · Score: 1

Considering the glacial pace of AI development, it'll be a long long time before we need to consider this. When the movie "2001 A Space Odyssey" came out in 1968, it seemed plausible that we might indeed have an intelligent, even sentient computer in 33 years. Didn't happen. The 'big problems' of AI have either been solved via brute force (i.e. chess) or are still big problems. Japan spent billions in the '80's and got very little for their investment (except maybe 'fuzzy logic' for consumer appliances). Similar results (or lack thereof) from the decade long CYC project ('common sense knowledge DB').

What passes for AI today, at best mimics intelligence. Usually poorly, and in a very restricted domain (such as NPC targets in FPS games). May be fun to speculate about robot rights - but to discuss it seriously, is a waste of time.

  7. No really good solutions on Keeping Passwords Embedded In Code Secure? · · Score: 2, Interesting

You've got a machine A on the interior LAN, that needs credentials to access a DB on machine B on the interior LAN. You've got two choices:

    1) You can store the credentials somewhere on machine A.
    2) The service (typically a Web server) on machine A can run with an account that's either has privileges to access the DB or has privileges to access credentials stored somewhere else to access the DB.

If an intruder gets access to machine A and gets root / admin privileges - then they can gain access to the DB. Obviously, you're first priority is to make sure that this does not happen! Use good firewalls and firewall rules. Make proper use of a DMZ. Check your application for security problems (buffer overflow, SQL injection, etc). Keep up to date on patches. Your second line of defense, is to:

    1) Try to insure that an intruder is detected.
    2) Make them work for it (access to DB)
    3) Have a good audit trail
    4) Monitor your network and application

I'll address item #2. Assume that you put the credentials in the configuration file or a separate file on machine A. You should encrypt the credentials (using an encryption application NOT kept on machine A). The key can be hard-coded in the (web) application. If you want, you can use layers of keys(Encrypted key b decodes key in config file. Encrypted key c decodes key b, Encrypted key d ...), but this quickly reaches a point of diminishing returns and can become a maintenance nightmare. You can obfuscate the key or even build it on the fly to make it more difficult to extract it from the application (for binary apps - it helps to strip the symbol table). Use the OS permissions to restrict access to the config / key file and the (web) application. This won't stop a determined intruder, but they'll have to work for access, and it will slow them down.

  16. Law Enforcement Data Sharing on OneDOJ to Offer National Criminal Database to Law Enforcement · · Score: 2, Informative

I worked on a law enforcement data sharing effort in Ohio. Most police departments are islands of automation. They'll have a 911 system and usually an integrated departmental records management system. Often they will have separate access to a very limited state / federal system. Very rarely will they tie in with neighboring local agencies.

Traffic stops are are dangerous stressful moments for police officers. They don't know if they are stopping Joe Citizen, or someone who just committed armed robbery. If an individual is wanted in the next town, usually that information will not be available.

The Ohio system (OLLEISN) was meant to address this on an statewide basis and got off to a good start. Data is exchanged using an XML standard (Global Justice XML Data Model) developed at Georgia Tech for the DOJ. Content consists of adult criminal records and is tightly controlled.

If the DOJ follows this model for Federal data and does a good job of implementation - I see this as a very positive development.
