Where is a two letter state abbreviation. If you just want to let users access (quickly) weather reports via browser; I highly recommend the 'ForecastFox' extension to Firefox.
Bell Labs was heavily involved in the Apollo moon landing program. In both a technical capacity and a project management capacity. I remember early on, going to a meeting for new employees where all the senior managers introduced themselves and talked about their background. Years earlier, most of them had worked together on the Apollo moon landing.
Google has formed Google Labs including a lot of folks formerly from Bell Labs. It's interesting that NASA is working with them on the Moon Landing 2.0. Hopefully, without the bureaucracy of an AT&T, Google Labs will be more successful at translating R&D into marketable product. So far, their early track record looks very promising.
I know a lot of experienced CS / EE folks (oftern with advanced degrees and 10-20+ years experience) leaving the field. Went into teaching, optometry, real estate, retail, and carpentry. I know some that just retired early. (Mostly) wasn't burnout - just tired of getting laid off. Or couldn't get a resume past the HR event horizon and gave up. Does not bode well for the U.S. economy's long term prospects.
They are 250 KW units from FuelCell Energy Corp. Like I said, it's a subsidized experiment. Don't think it would be cost effective on it's own. Runs on natural gas.
Might be interesting if you could run fuel cells on methane from landfills, sewage plants, or farm waste. Don't see much discussion of that aside from Beyond Thunderdome
My neighborhood has a set of fuel cell generators deployed at a transmssion site up the street. Runs on natural gas. It's an experiment, and probably would not be cost effective w/o state and federal grants.
Customer sales for the recording industry is a privelege not a right. Profit is a privelege not a right. Just cause the recording industry has a failed business model and crappy product, doesn't mean government should create a 'right' for them to be profitable.
I've always found that when I'm working on a ginormous software project that's literally years and years behind schedule despite drastic pruning of scope, the _exact_ trick to speed things up is to reorganize the whole company and add a few more officers.
And more status meetings. Many more status meetings - twice daily if possible.
I don't own an XM radio. I can't see buying one and then paying for a monthly subscription to listen to crappy music. If the RIAA succeeds it'll reduce the value proposition even further.
1) Kill off all the distribution channels for your product. 2) ???? 3) Profit!!
What? You think that just because they are a US company that they don't need to follow the laws in countries they do business?
No, I think there's a cost associated with doing the right thing. Sometimes that cost can be quite high. Whether you're willing to pay that cost says what type of person or what type of company you are. I think we now know what type of company Yahoo is.
Yahoo risks tarnishing their reputation by turning over e-mail accounts of dissidents to the mainland Chinese government. Compared to that, adware is nothing.

A character in the Buffy spin-off "Angel" had "evil-hand issues".
RIAA: "We understand that your organization: DARPA is responsible for TCP/IP - software used for copyright infringement. We demand you respond to our staff attorney immediately."
DARPA: "Sure thing, what's your longitude, latitude, and elevation?"
Next step - you get the OS free on DVD's mailed to you, given away in stores, etc. But to use the OS, you must pay a monthly subscription fee of $24 / month, and you can NEVER unsubscribe.
There are two aspects to journalism - news reporting and analysis. News reporting is supposed to be just that - tell me what happened. Analysis should be separate and present the journalists view of why it happened, what it means, and what's the impact. News reporting should be neutral, analysis is by nature subjective. But for the sake of the consumer - analysis should be identified as such.
Modern journalism doesn't separate the two. Too many journalists let their personal agendas suffuse their articles. Often the agenda finds it's way into the headline. Journalists are told (by their journalism profs) that their mission is to "change the world". That's dead wrong - their mission is to report the news! Then add-in the pressure to be profitable and the corollary of having a large audience. And nothing builds an audience like fear. So instead of reporting "New Near-Earth Asteroid Discovered", you get "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!".

I was going to write something snarky, but fact is, I wish that was true. Fact is that C level executives have a fudiciary obligation to their stockholders to pursue policies in the financial interest of the company. All too many pursue courses that are primarily in their own financial interest. It's a rare exec (usually a company founder) that will give primacy to doing the right thing.
I'd like to see my own state do this. I don't really care about the format issue (with one important exception). Don't care about the OSS vs. Microsoft argument. As a taxpayer, I do care about two things:
Most governments are paying for tens of thousands (or more) copies of a software application, when they can get a perfectly acceptable alternative for FREE
Proprietary formats are intended to lead to vendor lock-in. This is NEVER a good thing for the customer and can lead to much higher costs
State and local government budgets have been severely strained for the past few years. Why would anyone want their government to waste money on an office package.
If you want to build it into your Web site: the National Weather Service has a per state RSS feed containing weather alerts. The URL is:
http://www.weather.gov/alerts/.rss

When will Michael Jackson sign up for this? And what will he look like next?
RIAA: "We understand that your organization: DARPA is responsible for TCP/IP - software used for copyright infringement. We demand you respond to our staff attorney immediately."
DARPA: "Sure thing, what's your longitude, latitude, and elevation?"
Obviously we must make TCP/IP illegal immediately!

So when will Gates announce that AOL is "part of the operating system"?
Slashdot has migrated from tech news to "Tech News and Anything We Can Bitch At Bush Over"
Next topic - Is George Bush adversely affecting the frame rate of graphics card?

I'd be impressed by that!
