Using electronic gaming is just an evolution of regular teaching methods. Using games is a tried and true method to teaching children.
Teachers will use all sorts of classic games to kids. I remember bingo, card games and charades all being used to help me learn french in elementary school (Anglophone Canadian thing I guess).
So what is electronic gaming but the next step?
Plus there are all the advantages to exposing our children to technology. Less of a concern today, but it was different 30 years ago. Who would even hire someone today who doesn't use a computer?
They can be an additional method of expressing complex problems, allows for interactive modeling of problems.
Computer games are more automated, allowing for the teacher to spend more one on one time with students.
It levels out technically exposure between sexes at a young age. Video games are still considered (although becoming less of) a boy's toy.
Why the quoted 'adults' and teachers can't seem to draw similar conclussions is beyond me. I realize exactly how much influence having an Apple II was on my education, how much fiddling with memory allocation to get my games running in DOS and resolving stupid IRQ conflicts would eventually mold my education path. I certainly wouldn't have ended up a game developer.
If nothing else, ask yourself where the Amish will be in 50 years... Think of the Amish!
You can have mini-black holes, but you can't really have mini-novae or mini-supernovae (mini-super would be a contradiction anyways right?).
However, your right be concerned about the potential bouts of uncontrollable fusion/fission and thier scientist vaporizing shockwaves.
The mini black holes aren't a worry. It's when they become large enough to devour scientists, and thier space/time warping event horizons encroach on your personal boundaries, then you should worry.
Grey goo? Seriously, you're a human. We replicate out of control consuming any natural resources we can get our hands on. We're just not really efficient grey goo.
If he wants the profits from a study guide for his class, let the lazy bastard write it himself. He could probably do a better job. Isn't this what the free market is all about?
This is no place for a discussion using clear logical points. This is about legal proceedings involving copyright, therefore we must obfuscate the facts.
Making Available:
I see your car in your drive way, and want to sample it with full intention of buying one later. So I walk up, and see that your computer has the left the keys in the ignition and the door unlocked, without your direct but none the less tacit approval. I therefore proceed to make a direct copy of your car. You've unintentionally allowed me to make a copy of your car.
Offer to distribute:
I am looking for a car like yours. Fortunately I see that that you have advertised your car on a website based in foriegn country. The process is automated. Your computer decides whether or not I qualify to have a copy of your car based on whether or not our hand shake is up to its standards. I therefore proceed to make a direct copy of your car. You've intentionally allowed me to make a copy of your car.
The real question is, does this hurt anyone? Are the highway owners allowed to throttle traffic because of the increase in copied cars? What about the rising cost of digital fuel? What happens if we do have a car question on slashdot, what sort of analogy do we make for it?
In the War on Terrorism, the president in his finite capacity for wisdom has authorized any government agency, with at least 3 letters in its acronym, to engage in acts of tire tapping without the need for endless judicial oversite.
The government won't use this information to track you down to that seedy little motel on the side of route 9, where you cavort with no less than 3 women other than your wife. We only care about catching bad guys. Your wife however...
If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear but fear itself.
Come for the groundbreaking experiments in high energy physics, stay for the wings and wet lab coat contests! Remember, Tuesdays are 'Name That Particle' night!
Here I was thinking those types of web sites were just for perverts. Instead, I now realize that they just harken back to the more innocent, wholesome days of our unevolved youth.
Thats like saying: If everyone would just buy a gun and shoot themselves in the foot, we could get some gun control laws passed!
Nobody would deliberately check the "throttle my bandwidth" option. Thats not to say that the premise is wrong, you just putting the onus on the consumers. Doing so also makes it a commercial issue. That opens it up to government regulation and all the red tape.
Instead I would propose setting up a website, preferably with either political or religious content using BT to distribute its message. Now if it was throttled, it would open them up to a human rights violation. It would bypass the CRTC and end up directly in court.
Except for that fact that an "A" grade video game costs at a minimum 10 million dollars. And usually has a break even selling point of a 500,000 units. Some games of which include a full soundtrack of thier own.
In the case of a highway. A retailing company is leasing 2 roads, that go from A to B, from a wholesaler. One would imagine it would then sustain the approriate traffic a 2 lane road would during all times of the day. In fact the retailer makes this a selling point.
However in this case, the road doesn't terminate at B, it goes on to C (and so forth). The wholesaler also controls the flow of traffic from B to C (even if the distance is arbitrary or non-existant). Thus the wholesaler in this case is forcing the retailers two roadways to merge in one single lane during peak times.
This isn't about the end users clogging up the highways. This is about the unscrupulous merge sign put up during 'peak' times. The idea is the retailer leased two roadways, and they damn well want to use them. If there are too many cars creating a traffic jam, its up to the retailer to decide who gets to use the carpool lane etc.
In this day and age, anyone who 'hides' thier data beyond the reach of America's patriotic government data mining operations is a cut and clear terrorist! Whether it be in some dank and dusty cave in the mountains of Afghanistan, or a climate controlled secure facility in Canada.
Uncle Sam says "Do your part, keep data in America!"
They needn't be government sponsored merely idividuals and organizations who are ignored by the government as long as they stay on the "right" side of the law. Believe or not, extreme nationalists are willing to do the dirty work for free. It doesn't matter what country your in, you'll find some extreme patriots willing to go above and beyond to silence thier radical counterparts. Some governments do more to stop them, others do less... when it suits them.
They should consider low tech options.

America's Robot Army

Millions of dollars in developing advanced robotic military hardware. Individual unit prices no doubt in the 6 or 7 figure range. High training costs for operating personnel, maintenance, some sort of expensive high tech ammunition and long tech support calls.
All of it to be ultimately undone by a hundred dollars worth of high explosive, some household shrapnel and a triggering device operated by a guy living a cave who MAY have spent a total of three weeks at the local militant training camp.
We are living in the age of guerilla warfare. It's no longer about the size of your Deathstar. Its about how many plucky farm kids you can convince to join the cause.
I guess there new moto could be "Army of 00000001"
I'm holding out for the bagpipe playing robot. Put him in a kilt and let the good times roll.
I could actually see one of these robots sitting in the corner of a bar. Someone in a leather jacket walks up, gives it a good bump and it jumps into action. Like a ultra advanced jukebox. Not particularly practical... but what the hell.
Don't forget, that doctors aren't necessarily a 100% good choice either. Doctors do make mistakes in diagnosis. Plus the healthcare industry dips its hand in there to muddy the water as well.
Of course does that mean I would go to god damn YouTube to figure out which or even if vaccinations are a good choice? Not god damn likely. Bob's homepage for self diagnosis of terminal Hyperkeratinization? Wikipedia even? No.
I would go consult at least a couple of medical professionals, or respectable peer reviewed literature before trying to make an informed decision.
Then again... maybe people should get their health information of YouTube. Might cull the herd, weed the genetic garden, skim off the gene pool, maybe cleanse the stains off our collective genetic sleeveless undershirt.
Short of using it for fertilizer and German pornography, nobody really wants to buy crap. Music labels are used to cranking out one or two decent singles and using them to sell a whole CD. Because we are fickle consumers, and no longer want to buy 10 units of crap for every 1 unit of decent music the whole industry is tanking.
Imagine if McDonalds only sold meals, no individual items. And each meal came with your burger, fries, drink and a generous portion of steamed cabbage. Nobody wants the steamed cabbage, but you pay for it becuase you want the rest. Do you honestly think that model would work forever?
Weve clearly gone past shenanigans. Shenanigans only compose the upper crust of this gem. So far weve tapped into vitreous layers of both flim-flam and chicanery. I believe theyve may have even struck a lode of lies, deceit and poorly interpreted statistics.
Now to compare apples and oranges, incidents of smoking related illness to increased violent tendencies due to media is absurdist. Its positvely alarmist! More alarmist than the '!' in that last sentence.
So apparently:
Smoking > Video Games > Alcohol, Drugs, War, Poverty, STDs, Pollution
Did Jack Thompson have something to do with this research per chance?
Incidentally, since were all about poorly interpreted research; I thought you all should know that increased violent crime is directly linked with ice cream consumption.
Maybe it was originally designed to encapsulate cases whereby the actual damage to brand and profits were incalculable. Thats fine, there are some cases where the infringement gets a bit murky as to its consequences.
However, in this case its just being used as a punitive and financial fishing trip. Instead of saying they definitively lost X$, they just opt for the far alternatively mandated mininum.
When they thought this law out, what were thinking was being infringed upon to warrant a minimum of 750 and a max of 30k? 750$ is in the range for electronics. Have you ever seen a knock off television? Someone selling a pirated washer/dryer? 30k? Someone manage to dupe a BMW?
But thats all for you Americans to decide, with your overly litigious society. I'll stick with good ol' Canada, where its still illegal to suborne treason against Queen.
Its an article written for the people who think the devil is in the computer. Its needless fear mongering, so don't fall for the bait.
To summarize the article:
Despite America's best efforts to bomb the guerilla fighters into the stone age, they are still managing to get hold of cell phones and laptops. In theory, we blame thier new fangled abilities to communicate on a broad scale for America's inability to adjust to asymetrical warfare waged by non nation states. We threw in the bit about using PS2s to fly cruise missles to mislead you, its worked before. Consumer electronis are the new weapons of mass destruction. So are you afraid yet? Vote Republican or the terrorists win.

1)Despite the godless, secular nature of Harvard, God none the less inspired them to create the original video
2)Through means of divine communication assigned us the copyright and moral rights, as only the progenitor of the universe can.
3)With His assent, we subsequently created a derivitave work without blasphemy.
