  1. Peercast already does P2P video. on Roll Your Own Television Network Using Bittorrent · · Score: 2, Interesting

Peercast already allows for P2P video streams in most popular formats.

I've had a go with it and its not too shabby.

With clients for Mac, Linux and Windows, availability is good. Unfortunately, Peercast doesn't advertise themselves too well which means there aren't so many video streams available yet (typically 5-15 video streams and 100 or so Audio streams.)

  6. Nothing particularly *advanced* on Animated Short - This Wonderful Life · · Score: 4, Interesting

Okay, its fair to say that all CGI animation in this class is advanced but this doesn't really further the technology much beyond what we have seen before.

Certainly, plenty of render-farm time has been devoted to this character's hair just as Aki Ross's hair was in Final Fantasy.

The trouble is, the hair, while obeying *some* of the laws of physics, still doesn't 'feel' right because there are so many more factors involved. (like did she wash it this morning / static attraction etc).

In fact, the whole motion of CGI characters is still too 'soft' to be believable, they sort of wave-around like marionettes whereas real human movement has a certain sharpness about it.

It looks like they've done some good development work with the skin textures but thats about the height of it, nothing really that new or exciting to see.

  8. Closer to a BBC Micro. on Ceefax Turns 30 · · Score: 2, Interesting

The data presented by the Ceefax decoder in UK televisions appears to be closely related to the BBC Micro. In fact, if you directly compare an early BBC Micro display to teletext, you'd be pushed to spot a difference

Most decoders fitted to UK TV's were actually simple TTL devices which just presented a 31 character set of glyphs to the screen.

Indeed, in the early 80's, the BBC transmitted programs for the BBC Micro via teletext in a 'Telesoftware' service. This finally ended around 1989.

  11. A bit of a sensationalist item by Slashdot. on Soyuz Damage May Delay Space Station Trip · · Score: 4, Insightful

"I'm sure it's something the two astronauts on the station are thinking about as they repressurize the station with reserve air supplies."

Of course, if the 'worst' comes to the 'worst' the 2 astronauts use the Soyuz module which is attached to the ISS to return to Earth; they don't depend on another launch just to get back if there is a problem.

If they use the 'lifeboat' Soyuz, there are no explosive bolts to worry about there because they have already been fired.

Of course, it would put the module/lifeboat situation out of sync but that can be made up by launching a second time after the next crew goes up.

500 times more stuffing about that what?

My current system has 1x AGP 3D Accelerated card and 2x PCI non-accelerated cards. The physical setup is 1x major (centre) screen and 2x sattelites (one each side).

I don't use Xinerama for this (hence I get the major screen with 3d acceleration).

It took about 10 minutes to configure with X.org (mainly because I got my left and right confused.)

  13. X.ORG + Xinerama will let you do this. on Replace Your Windows With LCD Panels · · Score: 5, Informative

If you simply have multiple PCIE cards in the same system, X.ORG and Xinerama will allow you to do this by building a 'desktop' of four screens - you can then playback 'fullscreen' video across all four.

The dual-head functionality of some cards could let you get away with just 2 cards as well.

One drawback is that as far as I know, OpenGL is not implemented in Xinerama yet (not such a worry for video tho).

Probably, the most elderly nuclear reactor designs (which were also made to help enrich material for weapons) are now largely in Western hands.

We should be replacing and improving our own designs, not scoffing at the now superior reactor technologies of China.

Sure, the West has come up with some brilliant reactor designs in the last 20 years but because of the NIMBYs, next to none of the designs have been implemented and we're practically stuck in the 60's on technology.
