Yup, those pix are exactly what it was like. I too was up at the crack and wondered what that weird orange light was outside. it was only when i when upstairs to look out the windows (the downstairs window faces our neighbours wall (about 3m away) that i was totally amazed.
i ride a motorbike into the city each day from the hills district (about 30kms) and it was horrible, there was red dust everywhere. still tho' at about 0645 the traffic wasnt so bad, but my bike looked like i took it to the outback when i got to work.
good call. i just spent 6 years living in NL, for three of those as a motorcycle rider. In all that time there were _two_ instances of people deliberately attempting to cut me off. Pretty much as a bike rider, i thought people were more considerate on the road, and their situational awareness very good (compared to the ignorant drivers here in.com.au). People would routinely look in their mirrors and actually move out of the way if i was lane splitting (which is legal in NL provided you are
if only we could become better at this ourselves, i'm sure road rage and all that crap would become less.
I also spent a bit of time on the autobahns in germany ans was amazed at how considerate people were. i expected people to be going as fast as they could. it turned out that about 160km/h was an average speed, with the occassional car cruzing by at (probably) > 200km/h. sadly i didnt have a bike at the time
perhaps you should try http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/. its a radio station that doesnt play too much (any?) of the top 40, no commercials, and streams over t3h n3tz0rz. while i'm out of their demographic at 37, and dont like all the music, i love the fact there is "no fricken ads"
I'd love an alcohol additive that neutralizes sexist pigs so they never even make it to the bar in the first place. Especially the ones that think they're any hotter than the 'peg-legged hunchback'.
I'd love an alcohol additive that would lighten people up and realise there are jokes in the world and that sometimes un PC stuff can be funny.
i used to work for an australian isp that did something pretty similar except ours was a relative measure (ie how your usage compared to the customer case).
flaws and business cases aside, there were some concerns about people increasing there usage, and in fact there was a semi organised attempt to raise the bar on the actual bandwidth overall (which means everyones relative position stays the same, but the amount you can consume goes up).
As it turned out most people just didnt care. By enlarge peoples usage habits are exactly that, habits.
ok, never, ever, ever bluff with a child. if they call you out, and you dont follow thru' it starts a pattern.
I remember one time being an hours drive away from home and i told one of my kids that if they did this one thing again then we'd turn around and go right back home.
I thought that they wouldnt dare do it again, but they did and it sucked, but we turned the car around and went back home.
for me this is a matter of Short Term Pain, Long Term Gain (tm):-)
Actually I own a "Che is dead, get over it" and a "Che shot little kids in the back of the head" shirt. I'm not a fan of the scumbag. I almost was until I did some reading on the bastard.
Any online sources you'd like to quote? there isnt much on the much revered wikipedia.

You don't do that? Why not?
Because they accidentally the whole thing?
suspend and hibernate also work well for me on my lappy.
while the nvidia driver does work, i have screen refresh problems in a CLI with compiz. I turn compiz off and no more problem!

I've had my N95 8GB for over a year which does exactly this (except its 8Gb, not 13-32gb). The tech is there, you just gotta "invest".
;-) (YMMV)
Of course its not linux (Symbian S60 infact), and you really, really dont want to copy a HD movie over BT
First they stutter, jitter and flicker.
Is this that jitter bug i've been hearing about?
GE's technology uses holograms, or three-dimensional patterns, made up of bits of data written into the disc, which can then be read out.
emphasis mine. probably the single handiest thing this disk has to offer!
(s)he doesnt know the movie is crap before (s)he sees it?
using a dictionary attack?!
Their parents?!
i know i'm a bit late in this thread, but YES! as an aussie, i'm pretty happy about this.
But I still wish radio didn't suck so much.

perl
i seem to remember someone famous saying "Greed is good"
Google isn't making (much, if any) money from HTC installing Android on their phone. So T-Mobile isn't really Google's client.
since when do you have to be paying to be a client?
copy that:
http://www.itnews.com.au/News/68078,pipe-network-undersea-cable-to-boost-australian-broadband.aspx
I would code it in Perl, but I do _not_ want to expose my mom to a CLI interface.
why not make a CGI and use the web as a GUI?! :-)
Even if your parents are non techy, they've probably had some experience browsing the web, so a web GUI shouldnt be too foreign to them.
couple that with something like CGI::Application and you've got a great framework in which to build and expand what you/your parents want/need.

ahhhh, a kiwi :-)
i'm reading and replying on my n95 at the breaky table. I dont find it t3h suck at all.
agree, XML sucks for config, or at least would for "linux config". if you cant use find and grep then you're doing it all wrong.

..and surely wouldn't take advice from this crowd at slashdot for raising children..
You seem to be suggesting that because i read slashdot (ie, part of the slashdot crowd) that i dont have good parenting advice.
As an uber geek and father of three children, I find that statement both arrogant and ignorant.
YMMV
