So presumably these ships will connect through a series of Google-Sats in geo-stationary orbits, linking to a Google-hub in each country. And behold, Google shall inherit the Earth. Thankfully, a network of Microsoft terrorists will be able to track then using Virtual Earth and infect the servers with Windows, thus rendering them useless and saving us all.
Go to 'Help and Preferences' at the top left of the main page, then where it says 'Your preferences' (right hand side), go to 'Sections'. There you can set what sections you want displayed and what priority you want them to have. The first option (crossed through circle) will remove a section completely. Hope this helps, Smivs.
I got married! Yes, a slashdotter actually got a girl. A maths PhD no less (how nerdy?) and quite pretty. And it was nice and sunny on our wedding day, too. Happy news on/. - whatever next?
I used Firefox for years and still do to an extent, but a couple of years ago I 'saw the light' and moved to Opera as my default browser. It does everything I need it to, quickly and securely, it takes up much less screen real-estate, and is very customisable. It's occassionaly caught out by sites 'optimised' for I.E. (but what isn't?) but otherwise is brilliant.
So New Orleans is likely to be flooded yet again, but this is not a unique occurance. Florida is often trashed by hurricanes, and here in the UK much of our housing is on flood-plains, and some of our villages are crumbling into the sea due to coastal erosion. You can't beat nature, but we've all got to live somewhere, and there is normally a very good reason for a settlement to be where it is. It's a balancing act. Sometimes you need to put resources into sustaining a town/city, and elsewhere this may be inappropriate. The big question is 'Who decides?'
Another reason has to be the availability of light. Saturn's orbit is up to 1,513,325,783 km from the Sun (as opposed to Earth at up to 152,097,701 km), so far less light is available. basically a 'normal' photo would be so dark you couldn't actually see anything.
What you say is certainly true, but my point is not anti-MS specifically, but is a much more general one. We all have to live by standards (that's why we have law) and if some do not comply it inevitably causes chaos. While the transgressors often benefit, others suffer. Normally one 'standard' wins the battle of public aceptance, but it's often not the best one, it's the one that's promoted by people who are prepared to do whatever is necesary to win! What's best for the majority is a side issue, and this can't be good.
So inertia is going to dump more crap on the world, so it seems. How a 'respected' body like ISO can let this slip through, particularly in the face of all the wheeling and dealing (corruption?) that's gone on during the voting process is depressing. The IE6 of office software is upon us.
I'm not a plant. I'm not a mineral either so I must be an animal. My sense of humour (we put a 'u' in it here in England) is impeccable so my comment must be ironic. Also, here in England we slip the odd hyphen in where it's not needed when we're doing (do-ing?) anything related to/. It's something to do with being eccentric I think.
Let's hope that as Idle will be generated by slashdotters the content will be of a better quality than that of Digg etc. Slashdotters are intelligent, thinking beings and could never be accused of being purile or infantile, could they?
I've dipped into 'Idle' a few times now and it's a great way to waste your time....my wife already moans about the ammount of time I spend 'do-ing'/. and it ain't going to get any better. Great idea!
Don't be glum, Tim. Looks like your birthday will go down in history (see below). Except there won't be any history anymore. Maybe the extra-terrestrials will notice, and your birthday will become famous galaxy-wide as the day the Human race commited collective suicide.
You really need both (audio and video) at an acceptable (and equivalent) quality level. HD (and blueray) will presumably increase market share as prices come down, but right now it fails a cost/benefit analysis. I am lucky enough to have a decent 42" plasma, satellite digital TV (+DVD recorder) and a stonking audio set-up and it's bloody good, so no real desire to spend a fortune up-grading. Also, at my age (dare I confess-52) I suspect both my sight and hearing are just a bit off their best and unlikely to improve, making the upgrade even less likely. I'll wait for 3D I think.
Re browsers: Just checked it (using XP) on I.E.7, Firefox, Safari and Opera and it rendered OK. Guess someone's browser is not set right. You're not using something awful like I.E 5 or 6 are you? NOTHING works on them. Try here for something better.

My boring mate thinks this is a dull-fing...he can't see any porpoise to it at all!

Just remembered, the Cow is a measure of liquids, easily divided by two. You know, "I'll have a heifer beer and a calf of Lager,Barman".
The Cow as a unit of measurement? What a load of bullocks!
Well, it's not what I expected. I kinda imagined a tiny rock.
So Seattle's authorities were flushed with success untill their 'Big Idea' went down the pan!
So now we've got to be worried about aliens from different UNIVERSES as well?

On another note, has anyone heard from cousin who is a Nigerian prince? He hasn't called in days and we're beginning to get worried.....
Didn't he get married to an orphan girl called Carine Idah Kouakou from the Ivory Coast?

Well the day after my birthday actually. So my pressie from the scientists at CERN is going to be the end of the world. A day late. Ain't life grand!

All the water on Earth is essentially recycled urine at this point.
Oh shit!

Drinking re-cycled urine...are they taking the piss?
"I'm hell-bent on making it work." Then he will succeed, because as everyone knows the Road to Hell is paved with good inventions!
