That reminds me. My current plan for getting out of spending the holidays with the family is to find a place far away from them to catch a LOtR 3 Movie Marathon in a theatre. My family is on the East Coast U.S., so I'm looking for the midwest or west coast, but do people know of any theatres that plan to do this?

Has it been revealed to the world yet exactly which code is in question? I know they were saving this for the trial with IBM, but I imagine as soon as we know it wont take very long to just chop those parts out (assuming its true) and rebuild.
And what, exactly, happened to their statement that they weren't going after Redhat or Joe Linuxuser, but instead just IBM?

Okay, I realize some days are just very slow news days, but this is ridiculous. Perhaps instead of posting stories on people's unoriginal eccentricities, we could revisit cool software projects that maybe haven't been mentioned in a while? Like.. how's Plex86 doing? OSkit? That kind of thing. Or just borrow news headlines from newsforge, or osnews? Really, if everyone who had a witty little site devoted to something stupid that they thought was clever got their 15 minutes of fame, i wouldn't live long enough to hear about all of them. Same goes for pictures of gnomes.

I think if Sony really has their plan thought out, this time the playstation 3 wont need a "Linux Kit". We can all pretty much safely assume the next iteration of XBox will be the living room/pc integration. Sony has to compete, and their "cell" technology and much better open source relations have paved the way for them.

Maybe, just maybe, the Linux on the Desktop issue stands to become important to quite a few million more people.

  16. the big question on Intel's Itanium 2: Succeed or Fail? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Am I alone in feeling the Really Big Question is how much the Opteron costs? They've pretty much said the Athlon64 has to wait another quarter. So then, the "desktop" just has to wait, and its success really depends on the buzz the industry gives from the introduction of the Opteron.

But I just don't see much buzz coming from the Opteron, unless they capture the hearts and imaginations of that "Workstation" market they throw right in there with the "Server" market in their roadmaps. And quite simply, to do that, they still need to keep costs really low. Slightly more expensive than the Pentium 4, but WAY below the 2nd mortgage Itanium II.

Personally, the second i find out how much the Opteron ships for, I'll make a decision on buying stock in AMD for a long term investment. If they drop the ball on this one, their new "away from chip making" strategy doesn't inspire much confidence in this investor.

  24. If I may explain.. on Strong Hints On Flashing Your Xbox · · Score: 0

There is a very good reason to remove the TSOP in this fashion.

However let me note, if you don't have the soldering skills, you could contact hho@century-technology.com who would be able to do this for you for around $175. (I'm aiming this email for those who are *serious* about getting linux on the xbox)

Once it is off, you can begin burning LinuxBIOS images (www.linuxbios.org) until you get it right. This will NOT be an easy chipset to port, but it is certainly possible.

You HAVE to use something like LinuxBIOS because if Microsoft has *any* brains, they put the bootloader in the BIOS and made it so that the bootloader will only boot a Win2k kernel made specificaly for the XBox. (they probably asymetricly encrypted the damn thing).

Once LinuxBIOS is ported to the XBox, getting joe linux enthusiast's xbox converted is trivial. But NO, the LinuxBIOS people are not likely to just do this work for you. They probably don't have the time, money, or interest to do this. Besides the fact they probably don't want microsoft breathing down their necks.
If anyone does have the time, money, and interest to do this though it could probably make for a good strong community project. Good luck to anyone that pursues it.
