When it comes to the 9's of reliability, the first 9 costs 9^0, the second is 9^1 as expensive, the third is 9^2 as expensive, et cetera.

Most people are more than willing to pay for 99% availability, but the full five 9s... That's way beyond what most people consider "economically viable".

A better question is why the submitter thinks everyone should be footing a bill that huge for something that barely affects their quality of life at all.

Yes, every major ISP in the us either has it, or is in the process of rolling it out.

The technically illiterate do indeed see it as a benefit, and its a welcome feature by the masses.

The technically literate of us know how to opt out of the feature, and it's not a problem by any means at all. It's if they start leaving us no way to opt out that I'll get pissed. But then there's always OpenDNS, which so far, noone needs, but one day we might.

Wrong and wrong again. Your device causes the "measured power" to be reduced only, by adding a large capacitance to the largely inductive load of your appliance. This is effectively lying to the power meter, as your device actually has leakage power associated with it in itself. So you are literally STEALING POWER, and as such, those devices are no longer sold because they were made illegal.

In the world according to your brain, the computer is a separate entity that you are communicating with. However, the mouse and keyboard are the "tools" here and they are perceived as an extension of your physical self for the duration of your communication session.

The same applies to the rifle scenario others are talking about. The gun itself is not the tool. The stock handle and trigger are tho.

Sadly, there are very few artists around today. Most of our music is indeed put together by entertainment professionals, and the "album" has been dead for years, having been replaced by a hit or two, and a collection of filler. That was the "formula" of the entertainment professionals. An artist, of course, would never stoop that low.

But don't worry, Books didn't die when sitcoms came around, and albums won't die from singles either.

When someone offers music online, DRM free, cheaper than a physical album (mp3's should NOT be the same price as a physical, lossless album) I'll buy MP3's.
Amazon's new MP3 service meets your criteria if you are willing to be flexible in one regard.

In order for it to be considered reasonably cheaper, you have to buy the music you want, and leave the rest of the filler content behind. Don't buy albums. Buy songs. The rest of the album is crap. This goes for over 90% of albums produced in at least the last ten years.

What's the difference between talking to someone on your wireless headset, and talking to someone in the passenger seat?
Bandwidth, and the amount of brainpower it takes to decode that harshly compressed signal into something you can percieve as language.

That lossy compression used by the celcos is HELL on your internal signal processors. It takes vastly more brainpower to listen to a cell than a real person. And THAT is what causes such a distraction.
