First, thank you for taking the time to reply. Mine was indeed a serious question. A question I still have, by the way.
I understand all the concepts of user controlled economies, desire to play but not fight, etc. BUT I still don't know what any of this has to do with STAR WARS. If someone wants to roleplay being a farmer or an "image consultant" why not seek out a more appropriate venue. One of the reasons, and there are many, that I never had much interest in Galaxies, is that from all I read there was little opportunity for me to feel much like I was participating in the whole Star Wars thing. Your post confirms that for me - not that what you all were doing wasn't rewarding for you, and perhaps fun, but it sure doesn't say Star Wars to me, or apparently to many others.
And all of this has got me thinking - is there a market out there for a Massively Multiplayer Online Farming Simulation? Or a MMO-Beauty School?
Why on Earth (or any other planet) would someone want to pretend to be A COOK or a DOG TRAINER in a STAR WARS game? Isn't the whole concept of Star Wars a kind of Space Opera, in which archetypal heroes, heroines and villains square off in a battle of Good vs. Evil? What happens when a cook turns to the Dark Side? Runny eggs?
so why don't they band together and do something about it?
oh wait, they did.... and this is the result.
Granting China Most Favored Nation trading status certainly hasn't seemed to help open up their government. Maybe now they're more capitalist than socialist, but they're still a totalitarian, repressive state.
....Google gets the subpoena from the PRC to identify the researcher who searched for "gang of four" last Tuesday - and then shoots him when they get him, will Google still be declared "admirable"?
This comes down to whether or not you believe in objective evil. Is there a difference between a law that says you can't smoke in an office building and a law that says that to criticize the government is punishable by torture? My answer is that, Yes, there is a big difference.
By doing business with the PRC in this way Google, and anyone else who does so, sacrifices objective good for profit. Google could easily just say, No, we will not do your dirty work for you, and stay out of China.
as I recall Nintendo was still making and selling the NES when the N64 was on the market. Sony is (or was recently) still selling the PS1. Yet Microsoft is cutting off the xbox now?
looks like they're using their Windows/Office strategy on the console now.
.... the system just boils down to "Healer", "Fighter", "Thief", etc. Generic RPG. REALLY generic. Plain white box with "RPG" in 24 point type on the front generic.
Except for the part about liking meetings. Every sales guy I've worked with loves meetings. They want to have meetings for everything - except when they're booking my time on conference calls.
stop. next you'll tell me that my cigar doesn't taste like saddle leather, raw meat, vanilla beans, dirt or roasted corn. and yes, those are all descriptions lifted from Cigar Afficionado.
When I first heard about Internet telephony my first concern was that it would open the Internet up to federal regulation. I still think that will happen.
The problem is that with phone service getting so cheap anyway, the need for Internet phones isn't that great. Hell, I pay 34.99 with verizon for unlimited local and long distance. There is no great savings for me to go to an Internet phone service. I'd rather stay with POTS and dodge the federal bullet.
As a confirmed video game junkie I have mixed feelings toward the "next generation" consoles. I don't think that we've really maxed out the current generation yet, especially the xbox, but now we're moving on. The 360 is at a price point that makes it easier for me to Just Say No, at least for now.
I told my son that we're not getting a new console until at least one of us finishes all the games we own. That should keep us busy until the PS4 or xbox 720 hit.
Further off topic - I didn't think golf was a sport either, until I started playing. It's competetive, difficult, and I hurt like hell after playing. That qualifies it as a sport.
How many PC clone manufacturers have come and gone in the time that Apple has been making computers? Hell, even IBM and Compaq are gone. Dell is trying desperately to become more than a PC clone maker - selling TVs and home theater equipment now, but I have serious doubts on the long term viability of that strategy. Not that Dell hasn't been a great story - it has been - but as far as innovation, creativity, adapting to and creating new markets, Apple wins hands down.
"Was everyone else upset and I just somehow missed it?"
must be, because near the end of its life there were oodles of crap games out there. granted, it didn't take a PhD to guess which games would suck, if you played games, but for parents trying to buy games for kids it was a nightmare. keep in mind, also, there was no ign or slashdot to clue anyone in on game quality. ET wasn't alone in its suckitude either. PacMan was just as evil, maybe moreso given its arcade cousin. come to think of it, just about ALL the arcade ports sucked - Donkey Kong, Qbert, Centipede....
I would have to assume, as well, that an entry level game programmer has exactly zero input into the game design, gameplay mechanics, storyline, etc. He's going to be told to write some code to simulate this or that physical effect (blood, tire wear, beach erosion, etc.) No fun there, and no game playing either.
Get a job working for a big company writing code for an in-house application, and you'll probably get to play UT or HalfLife with the rest of the IT department.
keep in mind that IGN began by acquiring fan sites (n64.com, etc). I agree that now it is an unreadable, unnavigable mess - but if a site like your Shlonglor got an offer to sell out, you can bet your sweet bippy that we'd be going to shlonglor.ign.com for Warcraft 2 news.
short answer, yes. the supreme court has ruled that the first amendment applies regardless of citizenship - in most cases. in time of war this can be moderated.

agree, we should help them. I don't see cooperating with the government responsible for their plight as helping them.
so why don't they band together and do something about it?

The only people who can change that live there.
is "do they allow other guilds based on sexual orientation?" the Guild of Heterosexual Males? The Guild of White Men From America?
If so, then this decision is wrong. If not, then this is a nonissue and that's that.

A thoughtful, intelligent, insightful post.
Therefore, you CAN'T be a salesman.

.....they also appear to have hosted their website on a Segway.
as for making a movie about their experiences - well, it probably won't be Easy Rider.
it looks like a Commodore 64 with bowlegs. how is having your mouse UNDER your keyboard a good idea?

"'At the end of the day, we don't play games for social interaction ... We play games to escape.'"
at last, a validation of my dislike for online gaming. i'm inherently antisocial, and absolutely game to escape.
they also passed up many even worse entries. overall these are a bunch of butt-ugly pieces of amateur artwork.

Probably too late now, though.
