There really isn't a good analogy that refers to media. I was going to say that he's like the kid that has grown up on phantom menace, judging by the magnitude of his UID, but that doesn't work so well in /. sense. Sure, there are older articles, but that form of media isn't as readily accessible as the Star Wars trilogy on DVD.

I'm willing to bet that he wasn't around much before 2001, and isn't quite hip to what the "old" days were like. I remember. We'd have announcements of new ways of playing with E, or the newest version of red hat. /. got heavier into the news-news when the MS anti-trust thing was going on. It's been that way since, I guess, with all of the SCO crap, and this and that.

So, yeah. This is good content. It spreads the word on Ruby, which looks to be a cool language. I don't care whether or not it's cooler than Python, I relegate those types of arguments to the insecure-geek scrapheap.

The pagan traditions were adopted into Christianity by the Catholic church. The reason for this was that the church was converting massive numbers of people, and the people held on to old traditions. The same thing happens in Latin America now.

It is no coincidence that Christmas falls near the Winter solstice. It is no coincidence that the Catholics hail Mary. There were a number of Mother/Son-based-God pagan religions around.

To Christians, though, the only holidays that really matter are Good Friday and Easter. The other Christian holidays that are celebrated by the secular world are really just adopted fluff.

By your logic... what is this:

    * It REQUIRES YOU to create a user account.

    * You need to *install* the game, which takes as long as installing & unlocking HL2

    * You must be online to play the game, because that's where the content is

    * The updates are distributed through a bittorrent client, which sucks your bandwidth dry.

    * A disk drive is probably not necessary, but HL2, if purchased through steam, does not either.

    * Just for fun, go to their web site and try to figure out how to submit a bug.

    * All of this hassle, and you only get a freaken game to play.

    * Oh, and you have to *pay* as long as you play.

It's WoW. I don't know why people chooses to bitch about Valve, when there are bunches of MMORPG's out there with the same "problems." I have no problem with Valve, Steam, or HL2. It's their product, and they can dictate how it is to be distributed.

Maybe he should. When I get home, I know that I loathe opening up a programming environment. I've thought about some various side projects and stuff, but I never follow through on them. The reason is that I get paid to program. I think it's fun, but I don't find recreation in it.

I also have quite a bit of IT knowledge: fixing up computers, abolishing ad-ware, fixing user accounts, training, getting things to "work..." I hate it when my aunt says to me, "Mike, I've got a problem with my computer. My scanner..." First off, I dislike the headache I get when trying to fix things, when I could be doing something fun (i.e. playing pool). Second, I hate that I feel an obligation to work because she's my aunt.

A good side job is what I had a couple of years ago. I was a barista in a coffee shop. I could relax, talk to the customers, shoot the breeze with my co-workers, and generally not think about computers at all. I came home tired, but happy. I was refreshed in the morning as well.

Isn't calling the argument a cop out a cop out itself? You can't reasonably argue with it one way or the other. You're just affronted by it, because it assumes that you are less than what God is, which is essentially true.

You can't back up faith with science or reason, nor can you deny it with science or reason.

And no. There is no secret code. God is also not evil, because being evil is defined in God's eyes as denying God. Prayer also does effect much, but it is usually answered in a way that you don't think or want it to be answered.

Prayer may or may not be effective. There's no way to empiracally prove it one way or the other. Spending all of this time arguing about it, whether because you want to support your own belief in no God, or because you're scared of it, or for whatever other reason is pointless. Believers don't believe because they were convinced to do it. There's no way to convince them not to believe.

Try to stay ahead of the people's needs, and predict what they will find useful in the future. My department has done this successfully. I would have to say that my boss lets me have quite a bit of autonomy, and I produce good stuff for him. Very few items have real deadlines, and those things are usually menial tasks like scanning & editing & converting things, or programming projects for less responsive and less responsibile organizations.

Provide the required amount of support, but always keep an eye out for what is holding people back. Try to get it written and tested before people ask for it. If they don't ask for it, give a demo and show why it's useful. This will increase their efficiency for one, and also will lessen the likelihood of them requesting something else. Rinse, repeat.

Another good tip is to develop very generic tools that you can mold into many things. A good example is our reporting system. I wrote it so that it is very non-specific, and works with our database very well. It just happens to integrate well into every other web application that we have, so we run all of our reports through it now. There is no more need for Crystal or any other extra crap like that.

Lastly, it's wise to understand that a manager's job revolves around organization and communication. Don't hoodwink yourself into thinking that you'll have time to do coding. Also, don't try to stick your finger into your underlings' code, or dictate to them how they should program. This only causes distress and anger on their part, and only wastes time on your part. If your programmers can't do the work without you, go hire someone that is more qualified to replace them. Firing people is one of the hardest things to do, but it's a necessity.
