i'm not a debian zealot (i don't even use debian), but i have tried corel, and i have found EVERY other distro i've tried to be prefferable. i actually like seeing the list of things that bootup. and asking me about options during installation....
anyhow, in my opinion, it's the worst distro. with the possible exception of linuxone;) but, any free *nix is still better than windows, so hey, whatever floats your boat.
gadgets may be fun for a short time. but if children are taught through christmas, and birthdays, that "stuff is life", they will belive, that spending money, and buying stuff will make them happy, and will live life as such.
get a tree, the lights are pretty, spends some time together, cook dinner, eat some good food. maybe get a few gifts, or better yet, make gifts for each other.
we made each other gifts in my family when i was a kid, and we each bought each other a few things.
a typical christmas morning for me was giving my brother a wind up car (the cool kind you put on tracks, and do insane loops and stuff), a pillow, and a couple of cupons for me to make him breakfast a couple times. similar stuff for parents. we freqently made blueberry pancakes, or somthing else yummy for breakfast.
i often got legos, some new clothes (new to me anyhow, goodwill rules), maple candy (yuuuummmmm), my comforter that i sleep under was made by my mom, as well as my pillow cases, and i got some candles from my dad. to me, that sounds much more enjoyable, and definitly healthier than everyone spending tons of money on just stuff. but, thats just my opinion.
yeah, it's going to happen when there are to many people in an area without the resources to support them. is the answer to throw food at them? no. they need to stabilze their own society. if they need help doing so fine, great, help them out if they ask.
but, just saying "everyone in africa is starving!", is just ignorant and stupid. there are also people in the US who are starving. but, do you see people with commercials to feed the people of the united states? no.
africa is also an amazingly vast area. and it's not a single country. the countries there all have different situations and rules, just like any other place in the world. it's not even all the same type of environment, not even close. do yourself a favor, and look at a map somtime.
yeah, that was reminding me of elliot there for a ahwile.... but, had it been really similar, gates would have shot balmer in the face, and he would have gotten back up...
JA2 is a damn fine game. one of the greatest ever made in my opinion:)
hotmail ran/runs on mostly FreeBSD servers. microsoft bought it that way, and have tried a few times to switch it to NT. each time they have, it's failed under the load to some degree. they're working on migrating the whole thing really slowly to NT5 right now.
this is as far as i know though, i did expirence the failures both times, when people whined to me to help them out, that hotmail wasn't working. but anyhow, i could be wrong. this is just as much as i know.
although, it's not quite the same thing (maybe they have plans to change it...), but isn't mandrakes just to supply updates to programs? or even the kernel? (i am a mandrake user, but i don't use the update program much).
but, it could be easily altered to be more like apt-get should they so choose to do so in the future (i hope they do).
yeah, i used to run a public server that was listed in some of the search engines and stuff. and so i got a letter from the RIAA and my ISP (actually, the letter from the RIAA was forwarded to me from my ISP, since they tried to get me shut down there).
and it was dumb, they mentioned i was stealing from so and so, and i had 1 mp3 of them. they get all pissy about the maybe 50 major label ones i had, mostly covers, and a lot of the ones they got mad about, were legit, i had the cd sitting not 6 feet from me.
since then, i leave it just for access by my friends, and we try new things out, and then we go spend tons to expand our huge cd collections. and i havn't once gotten notice about that.
i still don't know what the music industry is complaining about. i don't watch mtv, or listen to the trash on the radio. mp3 is how i hear new things. it's not the new things they want me to hear i guess.
i've bought more cds from downloading the albums, or a couple of songs, than i have any other manner. i think i've bought 1 cd from the radio, about 50 because my friends showed the bands to me. and about 150 because i checked them out in mp3 beforehand, and i buy it as soon as i have the cash and can afford the cd.
but, i guess they'd rather me not buy anything at all if they won't let me hear it. so, maybe i will just stop buying for all the good it does me.
i mean, i like them and all. they're a cool way for me to hear new things, and listening to it on my computer, the sound ain't bad. but, i'd never want to use it as my main stereo.
when i listen to mixes that people made in their cars and stuff, i often have to ask them to turn it down, or off, because i've spent so much time listening to mp3 music, and i can clearly hear it if it's mp3 sourced. it screeches and gives me a headache really fast.
but once a player with at least 128 megs of memory comes out for around $100 (someday...), i'll grab one.
if you don't like it. don't read it. geez. how many times do you people have to be told? it's a big internet, go elsewhere if you don't like what is here.
uh, the cold war is over buddy. i doubt that they were designed to take out the united states carriers. i bet that was the furthest thing from their minds. i mean, they're just not stupid enough to start a war with the US, and hence all of NATO.
i doubt the US is gonna go after it either. think about it, how much attention would a us ship get if it got anywhere near that thing? that sub has been all over the news probably over a lot of the world for awhile now...
in linux:
netscape (&mozilla &galeon), kedit, pronto, xmms, licq, gftp
i like pronto, galeon and licq MORE than the windows counterparts. and i don't have to use windows dumass gui. i can use blackbox, or somthing else should i so choose. and the whole webserver and multiuser thing...
i wholeheartedly agree. i would enjoy playing a game or 2 of GLquake, but it's just to much of a hassle to set it up for my banshee to be worth it.
i think the distro's should come with the drivers, and on installation should setup the proper drivers for playing games for you video card. and should also provide a way to keep it current. a couple of rpms, mandrake update, or apt-get, or somthing of the sort.
not only would this be great, and make gaming under linux, actually, just gaming. but it would attract new people to check it out under linux, and buy linux games, which would result in more ports. and lastly, this would be even better than the system windows currently uses;) so it would not just be matching windows in some respect, but beating it to somthing:)
maybe so, but i'm not gonna knock them for it for one reason.
there are only a very few motherboards that will have this feature. asus, abit, and maybe epox. there's still conflicting info on the epox board.
anyhow, only reason i know this crap is that, while my linux box is just dandy, i'm really wanting a gaming machine. and well, the duron, and easy overclocking.... just to good to pass up. so, i've been reading as much as i can...

on the upside... at least they bought a bad one :)

and well, how many G4's do people really buy? is this useful, at all? can anyone think of a way this is useful for apple?

it didn't used to be. and the backend stuff is still largely BSD as you just said.
