I had something called Arcade Game Construction Kit for my Commodore 64, which I bought sometime around 1988 or 1989. It was pretty cool. You drew the characters cell-by-cell for various movements, you could make projectile weapons (not _only_ for weapons, of course), and make sentries for the "bad guys". I didn't get very far with it, but it had a lot of features. Sound effects and music development were part of the program.
Is there anything like this out there these days that's in the consumer price range?
This is not uncommon. I received my Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and practiced for a few years after graduating. I was miserable -- bored out of my mind. I had experience in a few programming languages and *NIX, so I applied for programming jobs. A telecom company gave me a chance in QA where I honed my skills while working. Now, I'm an embedded SE with a major defense contractor, happier and doing far better than I was as an ME. The college I went to only had the traditional four disciplines of engineering -- CivE, ChemE, ME, and EE -- but that didn't stop grads from finding and getting CS/CE jobs. Most were EEs, but some where from each of the other three. In fact, most said that their having a degree other than CS/CE got them a little more attention and made them more marketable. So, I say "go for it" to anyone wanting to make a change, even if you don't have a formal computer and/or engineering education. There are lots of employers willing to give you a chance if you market yourself hard enough.
If the Olympic contenders in the other sports have to be drug-free, then why should the chess players be exempt? It's an all-or-nothing deal and being fair at the very least. Whether or not chess becomes an Olympic sport is another issue, entirely. Besides, chess players can, potentially if not already, take certain drugs for stamina and endurance. This is mentioned in the article. Certain fellow geeks here are just pissed off because they're treading on their territory. Sure, drug testing is fine for muscle-bound blockheads, but chess players? That's unfair! Boo hoo!
At least no one is forced to buy Linux software. People buy it because they want to.
Besides, do many consumers actually flat-out buy Windows releases? Probably not. They're so damn expensive in return for what they get that they're too busy pirating them. Who hasn't?
Unions haven't driven out manufacturing; taxes and employer greed have. Did you ever notice that the price of goods remains the same for those companies that have moved their plants to places like Mexico? But people keep paying it. Merit pay only works if you have an honest employer. People who bitch about unions are pissed off because they have no job security and are too afraid to speak up when they are upset with their employer. You either have to take a load of crap and get shafted or walk out the door. Yes, there is corruption in unions, but that's just like anything else. Why the hell shouldn't the workers be able to get what they deserve? People complain about how union laborers continue to benefit despite mediocrity and/or laziness. What about those hard workers who get thrown away like they were nothing after 20 or 30 years of dedicated service? You think it's that easy to pick up and move on, especially at age 50 or older? Why not actually get out there and talk to blue-collar laborers and see how easy it is. I don't know about the rest of you, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to fly in a plane with a pilot who's unhappy because he's not being fairly compensated. You think going on strike is an easy power play? Fortunately, my dad's union never had to make the decision to strike, but the threat and fear is real for the whole family. Union funds only go so far and most people don't have enough savings to last any significant amount of time. Frankly, I'm tired of getting into these arguments. People like you are ignorant as hell and are too cheap to pay an honest price for honest services rendered.
The Omniputer was originally going to be called HAL, but there was an objection from the estate of Stanley Kubrick, the director who co-wrote the screenplay of 2001 with Clarke. That obstacle was overcome, but the backers decided that the name sounded too like the word 'Hell' and that it wouldn't have much resonance with younger customers.
Wouldn't have much resonance with the younger customers?! All the customers will know what "HAL" is, young and old. Get a clue.

There's a difference between being impeached and being removed from office.
Lying about sex with your intern, not impeachable.
In case you didn't know, Clinton was impeached.
...they just don't like Shakespeare.
...what?

Only if your definition of flamewar is ragging on someone for being an ignorant asshole.
Perhaps, but it's more apparent that the poster, "Michael", is just ignorant of these differences.
Way to go, Michael. You couldn't have just stuck to posting the note, could you? Idiot.
A Perl virtual machine IS in the works. It's called Parrot. Unlike the April Fool's "Parrot", this is an actual initiative.
Last I checked, New Hampshire's State slogan is "live free or die." His latest demands on encryption are pretty hypocritical, dontcha think?
Redundant? To what? Apparently, reading comprehension is not a requirement to be a moderator.
Why do articles like these still label Linux as an "upstart"? The Linux kernel just turned 10 for God's sake!

I guess they haven't heard of the "Real Doll" over at NASA yet.

Sony and AOL vs Microsoft
Yes thats right kids, AOL is coming to your PS/2.
Oh, wonderful.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Wrong! He broke into Ally Sheedy!
But seriously, you'd think that CNN would get the name NORAD right.
Doesn't anyone proofread anymore? Oh wait, this is Slashdot...
"Python in Palm" seems more appropriate to me. When I was a kid, "pippy" was slang for penis. Do the math.
They had these in the movie "The Last Starfighter" in 1984. Good movie, great idea.
