The guide is quite all right but I'm not sure why the author said that Google Earth or Flash don't run on 64bit version... I installed both on a 64bit version of Jaunty and while Google Earth doesn't really like Compiz (had to switch it off to prevent the screen from flickering) it runs fine. Flash also doesn't work any worse than its 32bit version (on the same machine or any other that I tried, for that matter). And no, I didn't have to tinker around with any config files or anything like that - just added relevant repos, fired up Synaptic, installed the packages and that was it.
Also, since the whole article is aimed at so called "Windows power users" I doubt there's need explaining what each menu or button does...
well... they may be selling panties in vending machines but there's still some wisdom left in Japan... iphone is after all just a toy in comparison to many phones out there and only people using it are either too stupid to use anything more sophisticated or simply do not need any more than iphone has to offer; that is fair enough but there's no point calling iphone high-end imnsho; and don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that it's not a good (for some) product or it's not innovative, it's simply not as awesome as many people may seem to believe
dude, have you bought any v14gr4 lately or enlarged your wilson? if not you're a lost cause to all online "retailers", there's no point of wasting good spam on you if you're not going to buy any stuff anyway...
Don't mean to be picky but it's HardROCK comp dude (-;
I got Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc, awesome bike. I ride it couple of times a week, 30km each trip - I didn't really loose any weight but I feel a lot better anyway.
I also try to go to the swimming pool like at least once a week and am careful about what I eat. That's enough to keep my weight and since I don't really want to loose any, just to get fit all I need to do is cycle/swim more.
You missed the point Jellybob. I take pictures like twice a year. Do you really think it would be a good choice for me to buy a full blown digital camera and carry it around just to take pictures twice a year? On my mobile I have a decent (for my needs) 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus - it's by no means perfect but it's good enough if I want to take a quick shot of something and share it with my friends and I don't need a 40 megapixel SLR to do that.
And as much as I am opposed to "taking pictures with a phone" idea (sounds a little like printing using toaster) it's just pure convenience - I have a phone, I make phone calls, send messages and every once in a while it can also be my PIM/video and audio player or a digital camera (it also opens pdf, doc and xls files).
no camera? no camera?! c'mon... i don't take a lot of pictures but at least i could take one if i really want/have to... openmoko for 250euro + shipping it's a rip-off, disregard what i wrote previously
I have to say it looks kinda slick, the same way as iphone does. I also like the default menu theme. Whole idea of open source is nice; even though I am not OSS idealist there should be a lot of decent software written for it. Well, maybe not a lot of decent software but a lot of software and some of it should be decent... or something like this.
On the other hand I am not a big fan of phones without hardware keyboard. Sure it's nice thing to show off, those on-screen keyboards (and other input methods) but I always picture myself running in the rain trying to get to the meeting that I am late for and to type an sms on such screen-only device... SE P1i which I have now with all it's drawbacks has a fantastic (almost) full QWERTY keyboard. 2.5mm audio jack is a PITA as you have to get one of those converters. Also it can't be used as HF since there won't be no mic on the cable. Does it at least have a loud speaker?
Other thing is already mentioned lack of 3G support. 3G networks are quite common here in Europe and while I don't really video-call people fast internet while on the go is a nice thing to have. Even EDGE would do but it's not present... Well, at least it has wifi - I find myself using it rather often on P1.
120x62x18mm - slightly bigger than iphone but still acceptable. 185g - a bit on the heave side but I could live with it. All in all for 250euro + shipping it's not a bad deal (I paid 450euro for P1 last autumn) - do they ship to Europe? I'd still wait for Android based phones and perhaps new smartphones form Noika (typo deliberate) but I hope those will come with touch screens (and hardware keyboard).
As a side note: it's tough time for buying a smartphone that "has it all" right now...
i'd say the best analogy would be something like this: imagine an outdoor gig (for example a car cinema or whatever they call them), there's a stage and audience area - it's all surrounded by a fence and they charge you if you want to enter; but there's a hill just outside the fence from which you can perfectly see and hear the whole performance;
so would it be right to prosecute people for standing on that hill for not buying the ticket? or perhaps the whole thing should be design in a way that you cannot see/hear anything from that hill? couldn't think of anything better... i would probably found myself standing in the crowd on the hill, where would you be?
the reason why i thought of this is we had something similar in my home town - an outdoor theater; and while you couldn't see or hear performances from outside of the fence there were apartment blocks just next to the theater and every time there was a concert or any other event you could see whole families standing in the windows or on the balconies and i don't remember anybody charging them for tickets... just a side story and my two (euro) cents...
greetings
p.s. i didn't bother going through all the comments so if there's already something similar posted by fellow slashdotter well... bear with me
this, my good sir, is one of those things that makes perfect sense when said with a lot of passion and yet it doesnt quite work in practice...

It's far from fetish IMNSHO.

"It's causing a major headache for lecturers who say it is almost impossible to detect."
Perhaps lecturers should stop outsourcing to India preparing assignments... ?
and why oh why doesn't it have large enter key? *sigh*
so every household has a PC and every PC has linux installed on it
