if you would have bothered to research just a little, you would've found out why
The general deal is that he's suffering from the more morbid symptoms of post-polio syndrome, can't really walk, has trouble swallowing, and is extremely frail. He has friends serving as fulltime nurses and aids, but doesn't have family capable of providing support. The IRS and medical bills have also worked against his solvency.
i usually start working at home, and around 1pm i turn to the local coffeeshop with free wireless internet.. i find it not to be as distracting as most people would claim (you have more distraction in a real office), this way you have the human interaction, a change of scenery and caffeine all in one
yes, i will get a million geeks on my neck for saying this, and heck, before i became a corporate whore i was against this. But now i've seen the usefullness of this.
make up a system which includes procedures for change managment and incident managment. Everytime someone asks for something, ask them wether it is an incident or a change (or decide yourself), if its an incident (in which case you have break/fix situation), you know its a valid/urgent request and you can work on it. If its a change, you put it into a change managment system, together with the rest of the work you already have. Make this work visible (give out ticket numbers and such), so next time they want an update, you can refer them to your change managment webpage and they can see which project(s) are still to be fixed before theirs is started. This way, you dont come off as a sluggish worker AND you keep your customer happy.
are you can go on IRCnet #linux.be and ask around, most of the people organising FOSDEM this year hang around there.. perhaps you can find someone who still has a couch left..
I'm sure this has been said before, but the only regulation you need is PARENTS, why dont they decide wether or not to allow their kids to play a game. Sure the minor can go out and buy it, but its up to the parents to decide wether or not they are allowed to play it.
Schools like this for security reasons, but who wants to buy a CD-ROM only machine for personal use?
Actually i think he meant what i think he meant:) Apple doesnt ship the eMac without any CD-Rom drive, there just an option for different drives. I think he meant there was no floppy which would increase security for schools (a valid point he has, but a little outdated, since nowadays kids bring home-burnt CDs to school instead of CDs)
the Belgian social security system is very well designed, there is absolutely noone who does not have the basic needs of food/shelter/electricity.. damn if you play it well enough you even get a phone for free (no dial-out except emergency number). The only people living on the streets (which are very hard to find) choose a life on the streets or are illegal immigrants who have fled from the shelter places provided to them untill their VISA case is processed.
thats why i said that a UCB or MIT education might be worthwhile, but both those colleges that i mentioned (USF and SFSU) suck when it comes to computer science (i took a great class on existentionalism at USF though)
And i hate to break the news to you, but there are not alot of people in the states who can afford those 'good' colleges, or get accepted. Sometimes state colleges or city colleges are the only thing someone can afford, and then your better of without a college degree in computer science.
Yes and No, if you want to be a doctor, yes, college is important, you will learn the skills you need. If you want to be work with computers, college is NOT important, real life experience is.
6. Whether you like it or not, most companies will NEVER consider you and most professionals won't respect you if you don't have a degree. You will keep losing arguments even though you're right
WRONG, i just turned 22 (a week ago), i've been working since i was 17 (WORKING, not hobby thingies, real prof. work), i started as a linux admin, helped raise a company when i was 19 (life), worked in San Francisco during the.com (safeweb). I left SF in september during the bad economy, came back to belgium, still dont have ANY degree, and i immediately got employed by Hewlett-Packard. I get the amount of respect i deserve, granted the first month you have to prove yourself, but that goes with ANY new job.
7. You'll never know how much you lack unless you go to college.
For computer science, you lack sh#t, i went to some classes with a friend of mine, both at USF and SFSU, and it sucked. Maybe a UC Berkeley or MIT education is worthwhile but those are exceptions.
.. And do you think a 5 year old OS is deprecated ? Linus Torvalds probably begs to differ...
You are completely wrong about this, Linux and Windows are both OS's that keep getting updated, granted sometimes the changes are big, but Windows XP is still Windows, just like linux 2.4.x is still linux.. and i dont see anyone trying to support the linux 1.x kernel neither.

One case in point is the CD-ROM only option
