  1. Philosophy in the Flesh on Classic Books of Science? · · Score: 1

It's more on the border between science (cognitive neuroscience), linguistics and philosophy, but this book provides the assembly language of human reason, otherwise known as embodied cognition. It will one day be recognized as one of the great works of early 21st century.

  2. Nolan's day is WAY done on Games All Downhill Since Pong? · · Score: 1

I worked for Nolan Bushnell in the mid-90s at one of his failed, post-Atari ventures. The guy clings to his success with Pong like it was the tattered old teddy bear that he can't go to bed without. He'd come in blustering about this or that allegedly brilliant idea, and yet it would always fall flat on the ground like buttered-side-down toast. He's a one-hit wonder who's been desperately scratching for his second big hit for close to 30 years now.

But to decide to have no security because you can't protect against all attack vectors is stupid.

Quit playing with straw. The Lab has always had security, and should do what it can to upgrade that security when possible. But the multi-million dollar boondoggle that is the inspection booths add very little in the way of any true security, but much in the way of making a positive impression to right-wing paranoids, as well as inconveniencing the hell of out me when I want to go play in the Jemez Mtns.

  4. Re:The Right has been bad for the Lab on Scientist Organizes Resistance To Polygraphs · · Score: 1

All the inspection booths have done is to rule out one obvious attack strategy. So now they won't be coming with trucks full of explosives. At best, the booths provide a false sense of security. Any attacker with half a brain will be able to circumvent their protection.

The booths were just an excuse to spend money and give the impression of security. I bet the contractor who built them is cozy with the lab managers and shares the same sense of right-wing paranoia they are attempting to project into the Lab.

  5. The Right has been bad for the Lab on Scientist Organizes Resistance To Polygraphs · · Score: 1

6 years of Bush has created an atmosphere of mindless paranoia at the Lab. Included in this has been a multi-million dollar boondoggle in the form of vehicle inspection booths on state highways there. It's completely unnecessary that my truck be inspected before I go skiing at Pajarito Mountain or mountain biking at the Valles Caldera.

For the last two months, Yahoo had been displaying a message over my inbox advising me to pay for more storage. Now, they're giving me the storage they were asking me to pay for just yesterday.

It makes me wonder, if I had decided to pay for the 100mb of mail storage space yesterday, would they have offered me a refund today?

I live in a remote area where DirecTV is the only option. The only time I've noted transmission problems is when snow accumulates on the dish. 14. technology = comfort on Sports Technology? · · Score: 0

Comfort is the underlying motivator of all human behavior. Advances in sporting goods technology make these activities easier, and therefore more comfortable. We find ourselves going faster, yet in more control. The rushes we get from it provide yet more comfort.

There were a number adjustments made to the story, and the Harkonnen takeover battle scene was pitiful.

When I access my home page with Netscape 4.76, I get this in the OT connection list: TCP Listening echo 0.0.0.0:Any TCP Established 1726 208.136.89.164:http This makes sense to me (a networking novice) as I know my website's (which consists of a single gif image) webserver is at the above ip. However, when I connect to the exact same website with Netscape 6, I get this list of connections: TCP Listening echo 0.0.0.0:Any TCP Established 49264 152.163.243.184:5190 TCP Established 49267 205.188.7.104:5190 TCP Established 49268 205.188.4.48:5190 TCP Established 49269 152.163.241.148:5190 None of these ips live at my isp or my web host. Needless to say, there's something going on here, and I've decided to refrain from using Netscape 6 until I have an answer. I'm hoping one of the gurus can figure this out for me. Thank you. 33nine3
