    My guess is that Wall Street Journal didn't want to pay the prices the publisher (of the scientific journal article) is asking for permission to reprint the pictures, or something like that.

    I never said they shouldn't be made available. On the contrary, I think its a great discovery, and it will help many people. I just wanted to point out that the "superbugs" are ever evolving, and therefore our ability to fight them is ever fleeting. Unfortunately, there is a lot of antibiotic misuse, which probably increases the selection pressure a bit more more than we could ideally achieve.

    Sure, until we use these new antibiotics so recklessly (or simply so often) that we select for resistant strains.

    And do you know what the really scary part is? I had an engineering buddy back in undergrad (at the University of Michigan, not exactly a terrible engin school) vociferously argue with me that pi was exactly 22/7. I asked him if he know what an irrational number is--he said yes. I asked him if he accepted that pi is an irrational number--he said yes. I asked him how pi could be exactly 22/7 if it is irrational... What an exhausting conversation that was. It turns out that pi wasn't the only irrational part of that conversation.
