Has Cocoa existed for 15 years? If I recall, and I could very well be wrong, Cocoa is no more than 5-7 years old. It is Objective C that is nearing 20 years of age.
I'm 21, so I haven't been out of high school too terribly long. The world wide web seems to appeal to just about everyone so I would suggest a web development contest of some sort -- preferrably data-driven sites. None of this MS FrontPage crap.
I wish my school had held some sort of PHP competition. Will it attract everyone? Certainly not, but I doubt you would want to. A great many high school students ARE just focused on scoring, rims and car stereos.
1) File systems that are "in use" cannot be unmounted because there may be uncommitted writes to them. When an application writes to a filesystem, the data is not immediately written to the disk for performance reasons.
2) The 'D' state does not exist because there is a "problem" with the file system. Processes are but into the D state because two processes are trying to access the same file or resource at the same time.
If you want IMAP, why not just use gmail in reverse?
Get an IMAP account somewhere, possibly with your own domain name. Then have all of your IMAP mail automatically forwarded to your gmail account in addition to local delivery (easy with procmail). You can just periodically clean out the IMAP mailbox.
There are more cell phone users than ever and more providers and phone manufacturers than ever. The consumer has more choices.
While the 5% drop is disheartening, I'm sure, it will light a fire under their asses to get more competitive. They need to offer a good competitor to the Treo 600 with as many different provider options. I love my Treo, but I'd love a Nokia smart phone even more.
There *is* a difference in sound quality beyond that of your MP3s or even your Audio CD collection. SACD and DVD-A are a whole new world. It is like heroin for your ears. Once you've heard the same album on CD and then SACD you'll wonder how you ever lived without the newfound detail.
Everyone, go out to your local audiophile shop and try it!
Screw globalization. When I call customer service for my American Express card I want to talk to an American who speaks my language in a relatively intelligble fashion and actually gives a piece of curry about satisfying me.
When I had a problem with my United Airlines flight a few weeks ago I got some Indian that could not care less about my situation or resolving it. All the bitch knew how to do was read a script.
Try explaining a.conf file? Wow, this will be hard: Rather than storing all settings in a cryptic and easily corruptible registry, everything is in a plain ol' text file. Damn, that was hard to explain.
This is purely a crackpot theory but if I wanted to make copies degrade, I would make sure that the copies are all imperfect. Basically, sabotage the copying software.
For example, copies 1-5 are made with some bits missing -- but not too many that the average DAC cannot compensate (Like how your CD player can still play a scratched disc). However, with each successive copy more bits are left out, to the point where it cannot be read anymore.
Just because proportionally, a large number of people can examine the source code, and many of them are not qualified, does NOT mean that there will not be a significant enough number of qualified individuals. The whole point of free software is that the more people that have an opportunity to see code, the greater the chances of enhancements/fixes are.
If only it was JUST bandwidth they were stealing. They also steal disk space and massive amounts of CPU time (for me at least, I use SpamAssassin).
I have a colo server that I host a number of domains on for various friends and businesses. Spam is going to force me to upgrade hardware more quickly simply to accomodate the 10% real mail that comes through.

You mean Belkin, right?
Additionally, most things Belkin tend to suck serious ass. The reviews on this product are very mixed.

Does Apple have something truly analagous to DirectX? No. OS X uses those nifty graphics functions for so much more than games.
Years old idea finally making it from Apple to MS.
IANAL but it seems to me the other party could be FSF, OSDL or Linus himself.
Let's not forget that Slate does not really fit their business model. They're only into something if they can achieve total dominance.

Is this "system" you speak of a Microsoft system? I've encountered quite a few broken users. HR is broken too.
A big deal? I was thinking just the opposite.

i am an open source warrior
Let's call Uncle Darl! He's an expert on allegedly stolen source code. There has to be a money-grubbing lawsuit somewhere in this.
Speed Spray? From the makers of Handsome Cream?
Here's a sneak preview of their code to be released:
int main () {
int x = rand();
if (x 10000)
blue_screen();
else
hang();
}

I just hope Apple supports them =)
Eh, well it won't be "live" for long.

Not exactly. It's because djb actually knows how to write good, secure code. Look at qmail: lots of people use it, no vulnerabilities.

I could be wrong; it wouldn't be the first time.
Panther was a minor upgrade?
What are you talking about? Troll.
Al Gore invented Linux, duh.

Dell assembles. Sure. They're also uber cut-throat on the prices. I doubt their margin is terribly high. They survive on volume.
Sun and Apple's business models are vastly different to mention their equipment and strategies. It's not a valid comparison.
I'd think RedHat too but they're just not big enough. SCO seems to enjoy pissing of giants. I'm thinking Oracle or Google.
