There is only room for three people for extended stays, due to Congressional budget cuts in the habitation module and escape vehicle.
The original intention is seven people.
That means the crew of three must spend 75% of their time in maintenance with only a small amount for experiments and other innovation.
Unlikely the current administration will increase funding. Many republicans hate NASA because of its environmental monitoring programs. And the previous scientific leader of NASA has been replaced by an accountant (cut and slash).
The new IMAX movie about the first three years of space station construction is fascinating.
The paper starts off with the wrong premise:
that computer science is programming.
Its much larger. Its much larger, including the creation of computing devices, how things are computed, the applications of computing. The article is shortsighted and ego-centric, but does have some interesting points.
Its going to take four years for the machine to reach full speed, and you like to use several years. Only the most established names can qualify- IBM & Intel. SGI, HP(alpha), and AMD are contenders, but I dont know if they have the financial stability.
Over the past century electronic media have become more pervasive- telephone -> radio -> TV -> video games -> internet. People were "wired" together minutes a day in the past to 24/7 now. Could this cause the "shutdown in emotitional communication the autistic experience?
Were a few of the scifi authors who considered mind-copy. In Herbert's Dune series, minds could be copied into other minds by Bene Gesserit adapts of psychic abilities from mastering spice. The minds could be used as a reference library for consultation. Occasionally people would get lost in the stored minds and become "possessed" by a strong personality.
In Pohl's Heechee series minds were downloaded into computers much like Kurzwiel suggests. They lived virtual lives and formed virtual societies. He also explored the issue of "identity": what does it mean to have more than one copy of a mind active simultaneously (a favorite theme of star trek transporter accidents).
The average laymen thinks scientists are just playing with toys when they see museum demos or visit a "science" store. They forget that science is a way of thought based on reproduceable experimentationa nd observation. It has generated more wealth per average living human being in the past three centuries than the tens of thousands of years of human existance under alternative ideologies.
Apple approached Gassee before Jobs looking for a software rescue of Apple. Gassee wanted an even billion while Jobs settled for $400M (and eventual takeover of Apple). Apple OS X could have BeOS instead of NeXT-Unix.
Any plans for a FORTRAN on MicroSoft NET?
Look how much mileage Bill G has gotton introducing various versions of BASIC the past 27 years.
I recall when MicroSoft was primarily a languages company, 1975-1981, it shipped a version of PC-FORTRAN.
Its a far-out choice, but Eminem has anti-establishment 'tude' and a gen-xy look. Both Eminem and Shawn are heavily involved in the music industry. And early reviews of Eminem's "8 Mile" movie, in general release next month, are good.
Unless there are some personal issues that Shawn is willing to reveal, there may not be a very interesting story here. Failed businesses are a dime a dozen. Could be a "tragedy" like the movie Startup.com. In a tragedy the main characters have a flaw that causes them to fail, e.g. blind ambition in the Startup.com. Shawn doesn't seem to have flaws.
In contrast, the Pirates of Silicon Valley was a comedy, i.e. adventures with a happy ending. There were lots of personal issues such as Steve J.s girlfirends and Bill's nerdiness. The happy ending was that everone got very rich.
I presume they'll hve to personalize the main conflict here. Bring in a big, bad media executive to quash Napster. But will it be interesting to watch?
(Even though a Brit invented it.)
Too much academic naval watching.
This stuff already happened five human years ago,
or 35 "Internet years" ago.
Excerpt from article:
"But academics are starting to find out how important an agent of social change the internet is, the opportunities it presents for researchers and how to frame policy and practice to cope with its associated changes."
Any 15 year old kid could could have told this five years ago. Adults, especially academics, are clueless.
The rings website reported there was some consideration by Peter Jackson of renaming the middle movie. e.g. "War of the Rings", because of connotations to the World Trade Center "Twin Towers". But I'd guess the anniversary media saturation has been cathartic to many and they can move on.
For a while there it was hard to watch movies like Independence Day or Star Wars and not think of 9-11.
The unemployement figures dont count people who stop looking for various reasons.
The link suggest over three million may have stopped looked already in the current recession.
A more accurate way is to look at Bureau of Labor total payroll figures which seems to be falling.
Two rovers arrive on Mars in Jan 2004, assuming NASA's unreliable delivery system makes it.
These are larger, golf-cart size rovers.
They have some A.I. capability to avoid obstacles not programmed by earth, via intermidable 20-minute delays.
Then they'll be able to go a hundred meters a day,
or several miles over their lifetimes.
The ex'es are whining because they were dumb enough to be duped by this pop-religion. Some of he ex'es are as fanatical as the proponents IMHO. Makes for interesting entertainment.
Because gene analysis is mainly an information enterprise, it will follow Moore's Law and drop a zero in price every five years or so. The first reason is that gene analysis is computer intensive. Celera and the Human Genome Project own some of the largest computer complexes in he world for reassembling shotgun gene pieces. Thus gene analysis will piggy back computer advances.
Second, gene analysis is getting smarter. Coding genes only occupy 2% of the genome. Of this, only 0.1% differs between individual beings. this cuts the analysis problem from 3.2 billion bases to about 100,000 bases. Mapping which 100,000 bases are important is the next stage of technology.
In summary, instead of a month and $600K,
in 20 years your should do this in an hour for $50.

That would be the real discovery :-)

SETI radio while NEC is visual. These would use different existing telescopes. They would compete for operational funding, though.
Thats the theme of Clarke's "Rendevous with Rama" series, about to become a movie. 'Kill two birds with one stone' then :-)
Internet time is like dog years: seven times faster than non-internet time, as they used to say in the rise and fall of the dot.comony.
I took three calculas courses at the local commity college in high school. Didn't even cover as material as the first semester of MIT.

Loaded on user's computer Dec 31, 2003. (You'd think a site devoted to computing would have halfway decent servers.)

Like the rest of us.
Almost all computer users look at monitors. So put thoses inexpensie LCD cameras in monitors and do a face scan. Less engineering than a mouse.

Woudl stress out any battery. Also dust on the solar cells degrades charging.
