  2. Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind on New Dune Movie Confirmed · · Score: 1

I've thought for a long time that the only way to properly present Dune on the big screen, and be 100% true to the details of the book, was to make it into an epic Anime. Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind was strongly influenced by Dune -- for instance, the Ohmu fill the role of the Sandworms. I've heard that Nausicaa herself supposedly was created in part around the question of "How would the Kwisatz Haderach be different, had it been born a woman?"

The medical community would be absolutely thrilled at a "0.1%" rate. Remember to compare with the mortality and quality-of-life of untreated and conventionally treated brain tumors.

Oh, and FDA inspectors (at least the rank-and-file that I've encountered) are known for being very scrupulous -- they follow an strict inspection procedure that is openly published for examination, and are not allowed to accept even a cheap lunch.

  11. What happens when it gets wet? on Smart Rubber Promises Self-Mending Products · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm curious if the material material still works in wet or humid conditions. Since water forms a strong hydrogen bond, I'm wondering if having H2O present in the interface of two pieces will "cap" the polymer's bonds and slow or disrupt the self-repair.

In addition, I'm also wondering how permeable the material is to water or water vapor, and if there is any swelling when exposed.

  12. Synthesis Gas on Startup Claims to Make $1/Gallon Ethanol · · Score: 1

I see the process uses Synthesis Gas (Syngas) as an intermediate, which is has long been produced on a bulk scale for industrial use (so it has been fairly well optimized for cost-efficiency) -- mostly from either coal or municipal waste. While various eco-friendly sources may make for good press and grant money, I would expect any widescale adoption of this technology to eventually migrate to the cheapest available syngas source.

Since Syngas production is a fairly mature technology, whether or not this becomes economically feasible will depend on the efficiency of their bacterial fermentation -- if the value of the EtOH produced is less than that of the syngas feedstock, then there's really no point in making the conversion.

Bought a shrinkwrapped All-In-Wonder video card at one of those big-box stores, opened it up, and found an ancient ATI card from years ago inside. Either they re-wrapped a returned card and sold it as new (not legal), or there was an inside job by an employee.

Fortunately for me, the manager let me return it (I had never returned anything I bought from them before, so maybe that helped). Nowadays, whenever I go shopping for computer parts (or small-and-pricey things in general), if the box doesn't have a transparent window or some sort of manufacturer's seal (beyond shrinkwrap, which is too easy to re-do), then as soon as I pass the checkout counter, I tell the cashier that I'm going to take a peek inside. I step back a little so I don't block the next customer, and I open the box right there before exiting the store.
