7.10 was not LTS and took forever to boot on my HP lappy and needed config to handle the start-up screen. 8.04 however was a dog for me and by that time I had learned enough debian to make the switch. Ubuntu is the whole set take it or leave it, debian is like lego, build it how you want and any bits you don't like can be removed and replaced with bits you do. I still run ubuntu from time to time (twas my first real working-with-wireless-linux) but Debian is just better once you become an advanced n00b.

What bullshit. The largest influence on the Earths climate is the Sun! You know? that bright thing in the sky that makes it warmer during the day. I don't know what sort of climatologists you speak to but they are idiots if they say the Earths magnetic field is the largest influence on the climate. It prevents the solar wind being a significant influence so it prevents many other influences but it is NOT an influence in and of itself. Incident EM radiation and the Earths magnetic field are 2 distinct and unrelated phenomena. FYI I am a physicist and your post is almost complete nonsense.

If by consistency you means consistent crashing right after startup then I agree (joking). MS has dumbed-down the computer and made studying it's OS's almopst impossible beyond a superficial level (ooh the registry! I'm really hacking now! bleh)

Why does one require a logical reason to run Linux? For me at the moment, it is an interesting hobby tweaking my OS, breaking it and re-installing. WHen I used to do this with windows, I would get all sorts of questions from the person on the phone when I would have to re-register with a new license code etc and eventually I just got fucked off with bloat, nagware and the shitware (IE especially).

Another side benefit I had not anticipated with Linux is network speed. Using FF3 in Windows and 2Mbps ADSL, i'd be lucky to achieve 300kB/sec. Running Debian, I'm lucky if it drops below that. Windows is just as crappy as people who hate on Linux think Linux is. It is simply different, and while I agree it is not a panacea, there are many more reasons to abandon windows than just what you stated.
