    same here.
    locked into stupid "policy" for policy sake.
    auditing of systems because they are connected to systems that are connected to systems and so on...
    but they dont go deep enough. they dont audit the desktops or laptops.

    they dont audit the home networks where the laptops get connected.

    the holes get deeper and deeper the more you look. It is all a stupid game. noone is truly serious about it. if they were the sensitive data would not be transmitted. just a representative one way encrypted hash.

    What about bit-torrent like access to usenet?
    A torrent for each newsgroup, and sub torrents for the articles.
    Then I can pull down what I like and not what I dont.
    And it will come blazingly through my asymetric broadband internet connection.

    no. I dont do AOL.
    I did once use the "free 9000 hours" when I was between jobs back in 96 but that was it. - and it took 6 months to get them to frigin close the account and stop billing me!!

    I really need reliable net access from anywhere that is within Cell range. I also need to be able to join into concalls with vendors.

    they applied a WinXP patch to Win2K boxes.

    when you are selling a complex tool to simple folks to maintain ( PC = Personal Computer ) enough care must be made to prevent mixed OS Rev patches from installing.

    Solaris Patches are OS Rev specific.
    RPMs, if properly pakaged, check for proper versions.

    Why is it not reasonable to expect that a WinXP specific patch would not verify the OS onto which it is being installed?

    Why do people feel compelled to do these things?

    Two excellent tools - hammer, screwdriver.
    Both can be used to install fasteners. (nail/screw)
    Each tool has its place. And sometimes you can use one tool and its parts in place of the other with no adverse results.

    It doesnt make them better than each other.
    Just different.

    My companies backend is mostly Java.
    We are using Oracle as the database, and Solaris as the UNIX, but we could be using MySQL and Linux.

    In fact, we are investigating that right now :)

    in the 70's the cops would come to school and bring a tricked out VW bug. it had modified headlight eyes that winked and blinked and turned on command.
    it had a modified hood mouth that opened and closed to "talk"
    and the fenders would move too I think.
    also had a hat :)

    They have huge hydraulic revolvers and "shells" that are activated by microcontrollers.

    Old Old news yet again passed off as new.

    If you take a look at Timex you will see the new line of speedpass enabled watches. This means that when I mug someone I can just get their watches - (which gives me the credit card and spedpass for US gas stations!!!)

    This has hassled me to no end.
    They are cavalier about it and will not modify their mechanism to be more specific.

    In short they suck.
