Unity looks usable only if you have 2 or 3 applications running. I have 30+ applications running on an average day. That's why I use Gnome with 10 virtual desktops. Unity and other "let's make it look simpler" would not work for me.

X11 is not bloated nor slow, GTK is both. Put 100 or so spinedits on one form in Win32 and in GTK. On netbook or anything other than quadcore machine, you will see significant difference in speed. And it is not because of the graphics. Sometimes I think GTK render fractals somewhere just to keep processor busy. Meanwhile, when I draw 100 spinedits using only cairo, it is almost as fast as Win32 while giving the same output as GTK including shadows, gradients, etc... I've being noticing this GTK behavior since forever.
I hope this is not the old GNOME vs. KDE apps flame again! Do farmer need Kow 0.9.2 or GCow 0.11.3? Do farmer need Kattle or GCattle? Would he will be happier with SheepKounter or GSheepCounter? Who knows, but please, do not start again with that Links "I-am-a-farmar-and-I-want-count-my-stock-in-text-mode" nonsense.
