Well I am finally getting a new computer, and I know that people on/. hate vista, fir seemingly good reasons, but is it okay for somebody who will be browsing the web (firefox ftw), word processing, and playing some SC? Bestbuy only offers computers with vista, even though I am happy with XP I don't want to waste money by wiping my hard drive of vista and installing ubuntu. Would I be better off getting a much better computer from a chinese place and using ubuntu, and how hard would it tbe to get used to ubunutu for a first time linux user. Not into the whole text based customize everything idea, just want it to go fast, be able to download torrents while swtiching between a movie and a word processor, which my computer can't currently do.
All valid points, but about the R4DS, at my university here in Vancouver I have yet to see one person using an original game in their NDS, probably because of the huge Chinese population (>50%).
"How do so many people miss that the two best selling platforms, by far, are the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii?"
So what? In South Korea there were 800 000 NDS lite consoles sold, and only 500 000 games in the first year. That's because of flashcarts like the R4DS etc, plus don't forget that the relatively few games that are sold are much cheaper than xbox 360 or ps3 games..
How about $5 for the movie industry, look how many people download movies illegally.... and $5 for software industry, $5 for videogames, $5 for scientologists
" It's not quite telepathy, but it's pretty close."
I though telepathy was when you could transmit or interpret one's thoughts. These guys are talking about interpreting what one is saying. I am way baked.
don't they teach you that stuff? I am assuming that they have introductory courses, because you're right, I have virtually no programming experience but I think I should get some:) I will take an introductory course to see how I like it, it won't hurt.
As a first year arts student (I was planning to become a lawyer one day) I am being persuaded to switch to comp sci. Here in Vancouver there is a huge demand for programmers with companies like EA etc. One problem is that I love writing, and even though I don't hate calculus, I don't enjoy it either. Would it be possible for me to successfully become a programmer even though I am more of an arts guy, because I could still get into law school with a degree in comp sci, I get A's and I pwn sample LSATs
I bought a pool table for $1, because it was for pickup like 3 blocks from my house and nobody else bid on it. Sold it for $200 3 weeks later because I had to move out, but it shows that it's not all crap on eBay. Then again, it's impossible to get a good deal on eBay, too many n00b bidders paying more than face value for used items from sketchy buyers. I sold $2000 worth of perfume/cologne testers that I got for free, some people would pay $60 for a tester (exact same, but no fancy box) when the retail bottle is $80, and then they pay $15 for shipping and handling.
Lastly, with about 100 transactions over eBay, the good thing about feedback is that if you don't give a shit about your feedback, then you can extort good customer service from somebody with enough feedback so that they won't start over with a new account, but not enough that a negative won't hurt them. eBay, good if you're selling luxury goods where you need a large market, not good if you're looking for a good deal.
What's your point...those people have lost X pounds, have used the BOWflex, even if it was only a few times. They are exaggerating the effect that this miraculous machine has had to sell more units, and if people are stupid enough to believe them, then they deserve to be parted with their wallets.
Why don't they just send a warning letter/email to accounts with above average bandwidth, sure "innocent" people will be like wtf, but you could stop a lot of filesharing. However, about 2 years ago a friend of a friend of mine illegally downloaded a movie via bittorrent, and his ISP sent his mom an email stating the name of the file downloaded, and that he should stop. Nevertheless, he hasn't had any threats and continues to download movies and music illegally today. Why would the average university student pay for something they can get for free...
*Note* my friend of a friend is in Canada so I don't think there is a real threat of being sued or abducted by the RIAA or anything like that.
Who cares about a crack, I wouldn't run Vista if microsoft gave it away free, and I *like* windows... Neither would I, but the uninformed consumers out there who just want to check email, look at porn, and download music (legally of course) are being sold on vista because it looks pretty to them. As long as they are willing to pay for pirated copies, then cracks will appear indefinitely.
The number of university students who get less than 7 hours of sleep a night is probably 9/10 during finals, and 6/10 during the school year. I essentially hibernate during the winter and to a lesser extent, summer, but it's especially hard when working and having to commute for 1.5 hours just to get to university:/
Tuition is $4000,I pay $2000 at a time, it's a lot of money, but one is normally more careful with a few thousand dollars than a laptop which is worth the same for some reason. I guess that theft is a larger issue when you're stupid and leave a backpack with a laptop at a cafeteria table, I've returned 2 this semester. When I mentioned how I prefer paying with cash, I didn't mean that I pay with tuition with cash for anonymity, that would be stupid. Cash is best for purchases you don't want traced back to you, or you just don't want people to know about. Hydroponic equipment is a perfect example.
At my university...we have maximum bandwidth until we reach a certain transfer limit, after which it gets painfully slow. I assume that at other universities you have to sign in to use their wireless internet. Still, people can still transfer via LAN, I think that's the correct term. I'm not tech savvy.
That's great to know, but it doesn't really help in a practical sense, legally I could pay $4000 in pennies (only 4000 because I'm in Canada), but I doubt they would accept that. I have a debit card, but use that to fund my eBay addiction via paypal, and I think that the government would be wondering why an "unemployed" university student is depositing a few thousand dollars a month into his bank account.
I tried paying for my university tuition with cash (I have a cash based job) and the woman there said that I can only pay online with a credit card. After explaining that I am too young to have a credit card, and that I only had cash she relented. Even then, she said that they couldn't give me any change, so I had to go and get exact change. Its bullshit, not everybody can have a credit card, plus I like the anonymity that paying via cash provides.
I still have rent to pay, though, so go buy a fucking CD you torrented or something, okay? I am assuming that you are a media mogul, otherwise you probably won't see more than a few fractions of a cent from this hypothetical CD purchase.
What's more reliable then convincing people that they know something even if they don't....could be worded better but basically if the US could just use a laser to put voices in John Doe's head telling him that he knows Al Qaeda was behing 9/11 then hey, time to invade Iraq.
if they're connected to the internet.

like Canada?
I think I'll just steal CD's the old fashioned way from my local wal mart and lower the risk.

Don't forget, Vista looked cool too...

If you can't get your hands on some of those chemicals at your local pharmacy, diet coke and mentos always works.

That's why I insist on paying with nickels and dimes for textbooks

I don't think the US was hit that hard by 911, 2k deaths is a lot, but cannot be compared to 1M iraqi deaths.
