Or you could realize that people plug laptops in just as much as they run on batteries. Many people have them because they need the same computer at home that they use at work. Universal broadband will help but that's not the case quite yet. As for 3D, a laptop like this is essential for 3D artists and anyone who plays games on their computer.

I agree totaly. When I first started to really hear about Linux enough to learn about it, I heard people complain about the installer non-stop, some of it very justified. Now it seems that every installer is so flexible, easy and powerful that they are way ahead of windows 2000. That was the first thing that really turned me on to Linux because I saw this huge improvment in a high priority area. I think my computer literate but not computer savy friends could install linux if they wanted to easily.

Very true except that Monsters Inc. was produced by John Lasseter and directed by one of the previous top pixar animators. A minor detail.

I really like the Phantom Menace commentary because it has so many different people talking about how they made the movie, not just George Lucas. That is what a commentary should be I think. The only thing that could have been better would be to have some of the actors on it. How cool would be to have the actor who did the voice of Jar Jar justify himself or Natalie Portman talking about what it was like. Moderators please note that this is actually a contexual use of Natalie Portman.

Traditional television sets display 30 full frames a second and 60 fields a second. A frame is broken down into odd lines and even lines, and one set of lines is known as a field. The displaying of fields instead of frames is known as interlacing. In certain games (the new smash bros and rogue squadron) the gamecube can display 480p (the lowest of the 3 HDTV standards) on an HDTV set, which is a full 60 frames a second. The 'p' stands for progressive mode, which simply means that the picture is not interlaced, and a frame is put to the screen all at once, not broken into two sections.

heard a nasty rumor that the Game Cube needs an HDTV set to get 60 fps; regular sets will only get 30 fps. If that's true, Nintendo blew it big time -- IMO the most impressive aspect of the PS2 is it's fluid 60fps animation in practically all situations.

This is true, and is not a nasty rumor, it is just the way television has always worked. Your bias towards the PS2 is not rooted in logic or understanding. The higher frame rates of the PS2 and gamecube will be noticed, however, as the interlacing of TV's allows for very good motion, at the expense of picture quality. HDTV does not suffer this and is both smooth and clear.

You and all the other idiot whiners who think they have "too much power" need to stop and think about what you are saying. Can you do realtime JPEG2000 encoding of 1920x1080x60fps on your computer? I didn't think so. Can you even do realtime encoding of 320x240 encoding of DivX ? No you cannot. If you could, you would be much better suited for video conferencing at a higher quality. 3D rendering (non-realtime) will never have enough speed for at the very least, the next 20 years, probably more. Some people said the same thing about 486's, pentiums, and everything else until mp3's came about, until divX and mpeg2 (which still use dedicated hardware) came about, until emulation came about, until desktop pubishing came about, until digital video editing came about, until GUI's came about. JPEG2000 creates an image about 1/4th the size of a jpeg with better quality, but it is very slow to decompress and compress. It will hopefully replace jpegs, and then your webpages will load slower. Just because you don't use your computer's power doesn't mean that there aren't other people pushing the envelope with every extra bit of power they get. I am getting tired of answering posts like this just because you can't think more than 6 months down the road.

I have wanted this for a long time. Winamp 3 should be very cool indeed, it should be able to not only play mp3's, ogg, etc, but also have many great visualization plugins (milkdrop anyone?). On top of that it should be able to have a compeletly freeform interface through scripting, and enable people to rip, encode, burn, and even download (through a very possible gnutella plugin maybe?) all in one program. Music squared. Imagine being able to request an album, have the tracks looked up for you, downloaded, .WAVed, burned as a CD and added to playlist. Its just a matter of plugins.

If someone is going to write a niche operating system, I think it would more beneficial to make it specialized and make operating systems for things that people will use one computer for. Someone should make MySQL into an operating system for example, then it could take full advantage of all hardware available. Many people dedicate whole computers to DB's and Webservers and such anyway, why not just take it to the next level?
