  1. What's the point? on Sun will Open Java's Source · · Score: 0

Open sourcing programs makes sense. People can then look at the code and make any changes to the code that is necessary for them. I've done this many times myself.

But programming languages? All you need to know is right there in the API. If you open source a language, it's no longer really a language anymore is it. And that's the point. Java does what it does so well because Sun made it that way. When you open source it, you open it up so someone may fork it or whatever. Will Java really be improved when someone decides to add PERL (Practical Example of an unReliable Language) to it?

The MS Word import filters are alone worth the price of admission (a quick compile on my Gentoo box). The KDE developpers have for a long time now been light years ahead of their open source counterparts. It's good to see that with this release KOffice will finally gain the recognition that it deserves. It's great to support projects that support Linux, but if those projects suck, your support is wasted. There are plenty other worthy cell phones out there that perform as advertised, such as those from Microsoft and Handspring/Palm. Don't let Linux be the one and only reason for choosing a phone. This is a good deal for the students of this University. They will be able to legally get access to quality music in an open format while probably just paying a minute increase in their tuition. Who wouldn't want to do this.

Now, onto the ask slashdot portion of my post. Any first year programmer with a rudimentary knowledge of programming could write what you require. If you search freshmeat, net you'll find thousands of mp3 cataloguing programs written by people bitten by the programming bug in their first year of compsci. Most of them have been abandoned as they suck.

If they had been written in an object oriented language (such as C++) instead of Perl, the program would have been modular by default, and these programs would not be laying by the wayside to this day. Just imagine the possibilities, at the click of a mouse, people could turn an mp3 database into a book or recipe database. And it may not be worth much, as it only has a 16-bit processor. I don't see how it will even run Linux as they claim. Linux requires a 32-bit processor as its creator (Linus Torvalds) intended the Linux Kernel to contain no legacy code. I can see there being some neat games for this, but it may just be a rehash of the Super Nintendo with the games being very similar.

Still, my point remains. If Sony and this company want to steal Nintendo's handheld thunder, they need to keep their prices low.

Odd sub numbers are development versions, while even sub numbers are releases meant for normal users. 1.3.x is a development release, while the stable 1.2.x series is what the average user should be using. For Slashdot to announce the release of 1.3.x Apache is gross misconduct on their part. Hopefully the many webmasters out there running Apache will see this post in time and not update their systems! Development versions of software do indeed often contain bugs, while due to the superior nature of Open Source software (of which Apache is), the stable versions are very often completely bug and security hole free!
