Well my server has been offline and even though I use it for personal use. I am considering ordering another server from a different hosting company and restoring from my remote backups and repointing my DNS and canceling my service with The Planet. I'm glad I don't host my DNS with The Planet for this and other reasons.
Also has this happened before at this data center. Wasn't this data center owned by Rackshack? Because thats who I signed up with originally before they were bought by The Planet. Here is a link from 2003 about a transformer exploding at Rackshack's Houston data center:
I don't live in the UK nor am I any legal expert for that matter. However if something is illegal to possess then they can get a search warrant to look for it. I don't know what the legal requirements would be to get a warrant to look through your home for violent porn. The other issue (in my oppinion) is if they get a warrant and are looking for something else and they turn up violent porn then its just another charge they can throw at you. You can't get him on this charge but you can get him on the violent porn charge. So my guess is that if you are a *suspected* sex offender and they execute a search warrant for evidence, they'll probably be looking for this stuff. But I am sure the lawyers will get to charge extra billable hours to debate what is or isn't violent porn. I'd like to be on that jury.
"During deleborations the jury has requested all the defendants issues of Hustler. More news at 11."
Of course the US is falling behind in broadband use per capita. When you have the telcos and cable companies dragging their feet while spending their time & money fighting/lobbying cities not to setup tax payer supported broadband. And these are some areas where the telcos have yet to deploy any broadband. I hope in San Francisco they blanket the city with wifi internet access. I am tired of these wanna be AOLs with their entirely pointless extra features and crappy service.
Basically Wizards of the Coast allows you to buy event tickets for like $1. And then people trade tickets for cards. Tickets are used to play in premium events. So this is not so new, you can only trade the tickets and cards in the game. And every transaction is logged. And yes every thing people have complained about here is/was happening when I played. People with cash would buy the best cards and build "uber" decks and beat up on the "newbies". It creates a hostile environment between the haves and have nots. Despite the fact that there are these tickets for trade, there is still quite a bit of fraud occuring. For example, someone uses a stolen credit card buys a bunch of tickets. Uses those tickets to play in an event and wins some cards. And then trades those cards for more tickets. In the end someone gets screwed and Wizards would send a threatening email to the person who recieved the cards. Too many occurences like this and they may end up freezing your account. I stopped playing a while ago so I don't know the state of things now but I am sure this is what Everquest has to look forward to.
What gets me is that you can tell the white hats and black hats are both lazy.
If the sysadmins had actually patched their servers with the appropriate security patches the "hackers" would have never gotten in, in the first place. If you read the counter measure section this isn't anything new that they shouldn't be doing every day and enforcing.
If you look at the section entitled Evidence of compromise you can see that the people breaking into the systems are leaving a pretty big trail to follow. In my job, when customers start complaining that their servers are working quite right, when you take a look at whats going on you can see a root kits been installed. The whole idea of a root kit is to cover your tracks. If these guys did a better job you'd never know you were hacked. Its quite sad really. Laziness is the biggest security problem if you ask me.
The real problem is there are so few truely new story ideas. How many transporter accidents can you have? Or holideck mishaps? Mostly all the ideas for the current series have come from TOS or TNG. Basically they keep recycling the same ideas with just a different crew and a twist. So basically almost every episode is fimilar and rather predictable. How many transporter accidents do you think they'll have in Birth of the Federation? Maybe we should start taking bets.
True problem solving doesn't come from what kind of education you have but from experience. The more experience you have the better problem solver you are. Mostly because you've seen similar problems and know generally what may be causing the problem. Whether you admin NT, Netware, Linux or whatever its basically all the same. Its how you go about doing something that's different. Your server still has an IP address, you still need to share files, set permissions, or serve web pages. All NOS can do all of these and its merely knowing how to do these on each. The principals are basically the same. So a good admin does need programs like this because you don't always have the time to learn a new NOS or product on the job. But what ends up happening is lots of people who have no experience end up taking these courses and thats when the "paper certification" happens. But then we come back to the age old question how do you get a job without any experience and how can you get experience without a job? And really I think you need tiered certification where to get a certain certification you have to be able to prove you have been working in the field for a certain amount of years. But even then I have met many admins who suck because they don't keep up with technology and fall behind. And then end up blaming everyone else for their own incompetence. And regale you with stories of years gone by about punch cards and what not. Certification nor job experience are perfect benchmarks for measuring how good someone will be in a job. But its the best way we have to date.
Well by a lot of reasoning coca.com or cola.com should be similar enough to coca-cola that coca-cola should own these domains. But they don't. Why don't they sue for these domains? Probably because they don't have them trademarked or couldn't get them trademarked. I don't know if Coca-Cola has Coke trademarked in Switzerland nor do I know the trademark law that applies to Switzerland. But the law probably favors Coca-Cola. I would say settle out of court and come up with some kind of agreement that both parties can live with. If their willing to sue for it then it must be worth something to them. Although that would just make you another cyber squatter.
I was on part of the beta test and I do believe its being shipped too early. The beta testers only recieved up to Beta 2. Considering XFree86 4.0 was released only recently I wonder if anyone bothered to test WPO2K again it. And considering 2.4 kernel is going to be released in the near future I can only imagine some of the problems that will be encountered. Overall I think its a good product I would have liked to seen it go through at least one more beta test. One thing I hate is the Fonttastic font server that ships with WPO2K. Espically now that XFree86 4.0 comes with its own TrueType font server there is no need to ship a seperate font server just for the fonts corel ships.
This is nothing more then a PC with a PC2TV video card. I don't know which video cards support PC2TV under Linux, if any. I know ATI's don't. The way to sell a game console or a multimedia set top or whatever this is, is not by selling hardware specs but by selling content. Lots of games, movies, etc. Most of the stuff they have speced currently aren't supported under Linux so they'll have to develop it themselves or wait around till someone else develops it. I wonder if they'll release the stuff they develop to the rest of the community. It would be nice.
Anyone that has seen the WP Office 2000 beta has signed a NDA. (Like myself) So you really can't talk too much about it. And I don't think Corel wants people to be review a product that's only Beta 1.
One thing everyone keeps over looking that it doesn't just effect American broadcasters but Canadian broadcasters too. But if you notice there have been no lawsuits filed in Canada against iCraveTV. On many Canadian news shows that have reported on iCraveTV have called iCraveTV pirates. So you have to ask yourself why haven't Canadian broadcasters filed a lawsuit probably because they know they'd lose. And quite frankly they know they don't have much to fear because for the majority of the population its easier and cheaper to own a regular TV. When TV over the net gets to a point where the quality is as good as TV then you'll probably see more aggresive litigation.
I would say we do. Unless you have no Windows clients on your network then you want some sort of server side virus scanning. You can never rely 100% of virus scanning to be done by the client as the user can mess with this, etc. There are a number of other reasons that has to do with performance. So for Linux viruses we don't need it but to prevent the spread of Microsoft viruses then yes we do.
VA Linux uses mostly Intel products. Intel motherboards, CPUs, and chassises (for their servers). I wouldn't say that is because of Intel influence but Intel offers better channel support for their products then AMD does. You can buy virtually whole solutions from Intel that "work out of the box". That statement is more true for their server products then desktop. Intel also has a fair amount of kick backs for their products. So everytime you sell a cpu/motherboard/chassis/ network card you get a kick back from Intel. Obviously this is factored into the price by Intel. Intel also offers free training to resellers big and small. They have an extensive web site for resellers. AMD is harder to support because you have to use a completely different motherboard. This is not saying AMD sucks or their chipsets suck but its that you have to do x2 work for another CPU. VA Linux only has the man power to test and validate so many products so they streamline them so its easier for them. I know all this for a fact because I use to work for a reseller that does many of the things VA Linux does. VA Linux isn't a hardware company because you can basically buy all of their components that they use off the shelf with a few exceptions I would guess. Check developer.intel.com and then look at the products VA Linux sells. If you buy from VA Linux you're buying into their Linux support/expertise as you might not get from another vendor like Compaq or Dell. I know this probably sounds like a love fest for VA Linux but I don't work for them nor have I ever bought anything from them (nor do I plan to). But its simply how things are.
I dunno about the US, but I believe all the dialups for Canada are identical as those that Altavista uses. I know they are identical for my area code. And the fact the website is called cobrand.1stup.com makes me think it is they have just repackaged everything and slapped the Simpsons on it. At any rate, I've already circumvented the advertising for Altavista so if you're gonna post about free isps tell me about one I don't have yet. And yes it works under Linux. But they're useless to me what I need is free cable modem access. I hope that free dsl stuff comes to Canada.
I've heard where when people were reporting stolen/lost credits over the phone to a credit card company that the person who was working for the credit card company was using those numbers to make purchases. The purchases were made before the numbers were flagged as lost/stolen. Because they were already lost/stolen all those purchases were just assumed to have been made by the person who stole the credit card. The only way they caught this person was that someone actually had their credit card returned after reporting it lost. And the owner of the credit card knew that the person who found their credit card hadn't made any purchases on it. So the credit card company tracked it down to someone working at the credit card company. So you have more to fear from people on the other end of the line then you do from technology. All this really does is undermine the confidence in credit cards and not e-commerce. Why aren't credit card companies coming out with more secure ways to doing transactions in person/over the phone/online?
If you check out the specs on a Mac G4, it has the identical specs as any Intel computer. It uses the same SDRAM, the same UDMA hard disk, the same PCI/AGP slots, the same graphic accelerator chip (Rage 128). It has the same front side bus (100mhz). The only real difference is the CPU. And really i think part of the speed difference is the L2 cache, the G4 processor has 1MB of L2 cache. Besides the processor I would call this more of an Intel computer then an Apple. In fact Apple is falling behind because the PC has moved on to 133 MHZ FSB, and RDRAM. I think at one time Apple made better hardware but that is not true today. I think their strength lies only in thier their software and APIs. What will happen to Apple when Intel (eventually) comes out with their RISC processor?
Waiting for 2 more movies to release a boxed set is unlikely. Its obvious they'd make more money if they released each movie seperately. How many people are going to buy a pricey boxed set? And by the time all 3 movies are out we'll have some other technology. This is more like Lucas doesn't want to support DVD for some reason. Perhaps later on to promote his own technology.
The most obvious thing messing is there is no mention for support for other distributions. All it mentions is...
"integrate GraphOn's Bridges(TM) connectivity software into Corel® LINUX® OS."
What sort of support will there be for other distributions? I think this is one of the problems with Corel, they just seem to be only interested in promoting their own brand not Linux as a whole. And this being a GraphOn press release don't you think they'd want to promote the fact they'll be supporting more then just one distribution?
If people start doing this they should be careful because if it is deemed a loan, Microsoft could give you a black mark on your credit. And to get something removed like that is nearly impossible.
Also the repayment appears to be charged on to your credit card, couldn't you just cancel your credit card and then cancel MSN so they can't charge you? I guess then they may just send some collection agency after you.

As long as they have proper documentation and identification. Otherwise its...
"I'm sorry sir, but your papers are not in order.."
Recall.
You have the ticker symbol wrong. SCO != SCO GROUP Inc. SCO Group's ticker symbol is SCOX and their stock is down 7.54%. Which can be found here:
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=SCOX&d=t
The ticker symbol for SCO is for Scor SA which is an insurance company.

This is off topic but US has legal prostitution in Nevada. Here's a FAQ about it.
