As I understand this, it is basicly a proposal to do away with copyrights, and in turn force donations from the people to artists. The donations would be collected via tax, but there destination would be determined by the population on an even basis.
While this on the surface looks like a great idea, it strikes me as one of the sorts of Ideas which has a huge collection of hidden negitive repercussions. One which comes readily to mind is that for large projects the star or lead would get most or all of the money regardless of how much work, say, the lighting guy put into it.
It is also worth pointing out that there is a great deal of cultural interia which would fight this. Media producers would work against it (put them out of bussness) republicans would work against it (government supported art). Its a nice thought exsparement though.
I'm actually really somewhat surprised that no one has realized openly partisan filters. I would think that a product which could be used to re-enforce a parents political views on there child would sell quite well. Something that would redirect links to sites listed as belonging to the other set of political views back too similar web-sights which walked in lock step with the parents views.
But then maybe I have finally managed to think of something that even the worst parent wouldn't try to do to a child.
Are these "comprehensive sources on each field" written in russian or arabic or chinese or sanskrit or swahili?
The sources are from as many different languages as possible and Murray does a good job of avoiding the distorting effects of ethnocentrism. He uses sharp cutoff dates at 800 B.C. and 1950 A.D. to limit the data.
Good lord, read the article. I'm not asking you to go father than that but if your going to attack his methods at least read the description of him that is put right in front of you.
What you are doing right now is desperately defending the modern orthodoxy, not through finding points of illogic, but simply by screaming and hoping to drown him out.
Is he doing bad science? Probably. But at least follow the path of the septic and listen to him before you dismiss him. Science is all about saying things that people don't like.
Oh I would also like to commend you on stating what you perceive to be the problem, and providing what you see as a solution to it, but what would you say if he came back after using your method and had the same results?
I hate having to throw my lot in with people and books like this, it makes me sick, but I will because I'm willing to defend him because right now he's in the fortress of science and your not. (your outside in the now *huge* village of "I listen to scientists, and take what they say on faith") I sincerely hope someone else from inside the the fortress of science finds a way to kick him out, but it needs to be done by the rules.
Apt is definitly a linux inovation, Xwindows is more of an old unix standby, so I don't think that really counts.
And for all of those who have been saying that the OSX and Windows have software updates I would like to remind you just how old apt is. Its sort of unfair to discount our inovations because someone has got around to copying them.
Reason #1 is the kicker. It came with there computer which gives it a great deal of inerta.
The thing is that linux is free-as-in-beer. At some point a few major distributors are going to start selling systems with mandrake or some other distro for ~$100 less. Then joe pennypincher is going to grab that instead, and it will be linux that comes with the computer, not windows.
Free-as-in-Beer. They will come because of free as in beer.
As cool as Linux on the Xbox is it means jack shit in terms of sales. Even if it didn't the money is in the games, MS may not loose cash on an Xbox sale, but they sure as hell aren't making very much.
As far as Ethernet and Hard-drives go once again they don't really make a big difference. Most people don't care about them, and those who do (admittedly a significant percentage of the market) tend to be the sort of people who buy one of each of the systems out anyway.
The console market is still just about games. Maybe the next gen (or more likely the gen after that) will be more about Internet multi-player, but right now its sort of a peripheral perk.
well, sort of a per-machine basis. Remember all those.deb and.rpm files floating around? I would go so far as to say that if you crept it into a few key places it would propigate rather nicely. Not that those key spots are terribly accsessable.
Mr. Marx if you thought religion was the opiate of the masses "you ain't seen nothing' yet"
Both advertising and psychology have both really come up as powerhouses lately. We are better at manipulating our citizens now than we ever have been in the past. Sure they can still get swept up in a surge of emotion and riot, but the second they stop to watch TV (and they will, people can't riot indefinitely) its all over.
actually, me and one of my freinds had a sort of an informal game going where we would try to download more porn than the other. This resulted in learning a lot (particularly about wget and curl) as well as some rather nifty perl scripts for sorting and filtering. What I find amuseing is that a lot of the skills I developed there have been very usefull elsewhere.
See I always thought that the secret was that they used a piss poor randomization algorithm in the arcade game, and that if you shot the bonus ship on a shot mod 34 you got the max random bonus score
What I find interesting is that there are virtualy no stories coming to the surface about people who have been protected by the police. This indicates to me that there is in fact a problem with the way police enforcement is being handled. Much of the behaviour described here is quite hanous, but no one seems to have a first hand account of the police actually being helfull.

On a total sidenote,
.ssh/config rules. I.E.
I am behind a NAT and its probably worth taking the time to set some
Host mailserver
Hostname mynatbox.mydomain.com

Still a hack though.
what about a $100 game cube, and a $500 computer. you just saved $400, and the ability to do two things at once.

I suppose this is better than just changing the font to wingdings, but then SCO probably has a patent on that
well you know, I get all of my information from video games.
Don't penguins kill themselves too?
I wonder if they got such a l33t name using there system. Perhaps this is an exsample of the great things to come from this system.
This reminds me why we need this sort of program.
Its just not good enough to hope nature will save us from the bugeyed invaders.

If you didn't want to feel stupider for having read this, you should've set your threshold higher.
Aw crap, I'm set all the way up to five.
thanks, that was a good article
Trying to make bits uncopyable is like trying to make water not wet.
you mean you just need to lower the temperature below 0 degrees Celsius?
Apple Software Update updates all of my built-in software, including this iTunes update.
Are you implying that for software to be innovative it has to remain uncopied? apt was around long before the apple software update.
mod parent up.

Ah but that was before TV.
To plagiarize from Calvin and Hobbes a bit:

To you I respond with the exception Conker's Bad Fur day Cute little animated squirle, more over the top sex and violence than I have seen in any other game includeing vice city. (throwing pesents into wood chippers, and feeding one charicter poop until he exsplodes come to mind) Just because its cute doesn't mean its ok for little billy.

I don't know if she will learn faster, but she's bound to be more flexsable.
