I agree with your general inputs and conclusions. However, I think that Mims is correct, in a sense.
"The evolution of these complex molecules, which had to exist in the earliest cells, is so improbable..." --Mims
Yes, it is improbable, on a small-scale, and that seems to be where Mims' analysis has stopped.
"If enough random things happen and the beneficial things survive, then not only is the evolution not improbable, it's almost inevitable given enough time." --parent
Yes indeed.
I found Mims' statement that he has "built thousands of circuits, none of which were made by randomly wiring together components" very telling. If he were to wire billions of circuits by randomly wiring together components, then he might end up with a few that were useful.
I'm having a hard time reconciling his beliefs with his electronic achievements. This is not meant as a slam.

Yes, exactly. But having your own business means that you don't have to worry about some fucking fuck like Corley trying to improve his own position at your expense. Even if you keep yourself up-to-date, he could decide he's in the mood to cut costs this quarter, and your butt would be OUT.
On your own, you can be in the driver's seat. On the other hand, you had better be willing to drive.
Oh, please make no mistake: I do not like many politicians. Pelosi makes my sphincter hurt every time I see her. She and others like her are truly jackasses, and fine representations of the race to the bottom of the cesspool. (Equal time: so is Mitch McConnell)
But so are the organizations running the websites that we are discussing.
Let's read that again. That quote, if the reader were a liberal, would NOT be perceived as a negative. She will need "loyal" foot soldiers, who can be counted on "95% of the time". It would sound pretty good to a Pelosi supporter.
They are hoping to steal from the gullible, not to deal honestly. What's the word for that? Oh yeah, "dishonest". I further assert "fraudulent".
The world has no need of bottom-feeding, dishonest frauds like those jackasses.
Perception is trumped by the facts here. Fraud is fraud, and it's illegal. That both sides have been doing it for a long time does not make it okay for either of them.
A liar is a liar is a liar, and we don't need him/her/it ("it" in the case of an organization or website). There's too much real shit at stake in the world for people to be making bad decisions based on lies. These fuckers are doing a disservice to society.
You DO realize that a lot of the technology that the public currently uses is derived from academic and government research that was funded by tax dollars, right? Heck, even military research has resulted in spread-spectrum communications for cell phones. So the tax payers have benefited from the use of their tax dollars for this. A claim to the contrary is both misinformed about the past and short-sighted about the future.
"The REAL PROBLEM here is the desperate need for contract and purchasing reform in the federal government."
Yes, and paradoxically, all of those procedures exist because of efforts to control costs. (You certainly know this, but I am stating it for the other readers.) If there are no controls, then waste occurs. But with controls, other kinds of waste occur. "Quality" is a difficult balance.
Very cool.
By the way, if you ever use an iPad for writing notes (with an added keyboard, since the screen keyboard is insufficient), then try the Textastic writing app. Fast, fast, fast. That is where I first learned about markdown. Textastic will render the markdown to formatted text within the app.
This.
As this poster describes, you can hammer out minutes and notes in real time in markdown, then use pandoc to render them to WYSIWYG-able format. Then you mail it out, and everyone else is amazed at your speed. More to the point, you don"t waste your own time.
"Welcome to the Derek Zoolander Center for kids who can't Statistics good, and who want to learn to do other stuff good too."

"the junkyard example"
I had to look that one up. Is it this?
Hoyle's fallacy, also known as the Junkyard tornado

Darn good suggestion. I'd rather have a 3D printer.

Nicely put.

Ugh. Channeling a bit of CJ Cherryh?

"There's a reason people have generally looked up to the US."
Yeah, but that, too, is fading. 'People' are not the only thing we are killing, one at a time. We are also killing 'respect'.
