  1. Can't see why "dual core" would be a selling point on Dual-Core Chips Coming To All Smartphones In 2011 · · Score: 4, Insightful

"Runs smoothly" would be a selling point. "Amazing graphics" would be a selling point. "Long battery life" would be a selling point. But the number of bits of silicon inside the phone really isn't going to attract many consumers.

Wall clock time? My PC never seems to be waiting on something being drawn, so I'm not sure why graphical fluff would be a problem.

I can't talk about runtimes, but my window manager is currently taking up less than 3% of my CPU. If yours is sucking up dramatically more than that then I'm somewhat surprised...

Just to say - I love the awesome bar. I think it's, well, awesome. Makes it so much easier finding something I know I looked at recently, but can't remember exactly where.

As TFA says, they didn't show them the actual people, they showed them a CGI version of the dance moves that the people had carried out, put together using motion capture.

  11. Re:Not terribly surprising on It's Official — AMD Will Retire the ATI Brand · · Score: 2, Informative

ATI graphics cards work just fine with Intel processors. I don't believe there's any move to stop them doing so when they rebrand.

  12. Not terribly surprising on It's Official — AMD Will Retire the ATI Brand · · Score: 1

They can give the AMD brand a big boost by associating it directly with the graphics cards - and it will probably mean that people buying an AMD graphics card will be more likely to buy an AMD processor to go with it.

You do only need the three books. Nobody is forcing you to buy any other books if you don't want them.

  14. This would make life harder on Alien Swarm Can Be Played As a Terrifying FPS · · Score: 2, Informative

Top-down games spawn all around you, because you can see behind you just as well as you can see in front of you.

Looking in only one direction at a time would be crippling.

  18. I'm fine with this - on one condition on Paperless Tickets Flourish Despite 'Grandma Problem' · · Score: 1

I'd be absolutely fine with this - if you could get a refund from the original ticket company at your whim. If I can't go to a concert at the moment I can resell the ticket. If they stop me doing that then they should refund the money (heck - keep the processing charge) and then resell it to someone else.

  19. Re:More levels need more art on Do Gamers Want Simpler Games? · · Score: 1

Some more art, sure. But not in proportion. Once you got "trees" and "cars", etc. you need to tweak them for successive levels, but you don't need to necessarily build whole new ones from scratch.

  20. Shorter isn't necessarily that much cheaper on Do Gamers Want Simpler Games? · · Score: 1

The problem is that the expensive part of the game is usually the engine+art assets. Once you have those, the level design is usually the cheap bit. Making a 5 hour game is still cheaper than a 40 hour game, but not by as much as you'd think...

  21. Some confusion? on A New "Medical Lab On a Chip" For Every Home? · · Score: 1

It's interesting that the two highest voted comments here both assume that this is looking at the patient's DNA, whereas the article seems (to me) to be saying that it's looking for the DNA of specific diseases - in order to tell you if you have them.

So next time you're feeling under the weather you can put a few drops of blood into the device and it'll tell you whether you have a cold or smallpox, without you having to trek to the Doctor and possibly waste both time and money.
