I want my daylight savings time for one reason - so I'm not woken at an ungodly (Ungodly? unGodly?) hour when the sun rises at its earliest, and I know I would be - if the sun didn't, my husband, who is very reactive to sunlight, would be awake and that would do it.
I live in Indiana, and I'm thrilled that we're finally doing DST.
The layout for the exhibitor's area at Gencon Indy has been revamped, and a substantial area set aside for the electronic gaming folks. Some of the companies will save some money, because they were already attending GenCon, such as SOE and the makers of City of Heroes.
I think I can give you a good indication, as I've never been able to watch Farscape, and I think that Battlestar Galactica is one of the best sci-fi shows ever, along with DS9 and Firefly.
The first four seasons of SG-1 rank about 7-8. Seasons five and six were more 6-7. Season 7 was a 6. I wouldn't rank anything since then more than a five.
They would have to be, IMHO, pretty stupid to move GenCon. GenCon SoCal has been so-so out there compared with GenCon Indy, here in the heart of tabletop gamer land (as far as I can tell).
Why do I say the midwest is heavier on gamers? Because GenCon SoCal doesn't do as well as GenCon Indy, and because Winter Fantasy (WotC's RPGA Convention) isn't doing as well as it was in Indiana. It's now on the east coast.
At any rate, I'd hate to miss out on GenCon, but I'm not interested in flying to California for it.:/
If you want intense customization and morality choices, you don't want a MMORPG, you want a plain old paper and dice tabletop RPG, IMHO. And if you want that feeling of more than just you and the other 3-5 people in your party, then find a "massive" non-online game, like the living ones offered by the RPGA. In particular, I recommend the Living Arcanis campaign, where the actions of the players have made a lot of changes to what is going on.
(Note: The RPGA is a marketing arm of WotC/Hasbro, but not all the campaigns in it are.)
That's right, I have used almost no college math in my seven years in the programming world. Heck, earlier this year, I had to do some math, but unfortunately it wasn't a kind I'd ever had: spherical geometry, preferably relating to it being on the actual Earth.
Anyway, my college was on a three "quarters" system (don't look at me like that, that's what they called them), and as a CS major I had to have: Calculus I, II, III Differential Equations I & II Discrete & Combinatorial Math I & II, with III fulfilling a math elective Linear Algebra Intro to Probability (in contrast to the engineering majors Statistics class) And, IIRC, two more math electives. I took Fractals and Cryptography.
And sadly, I don't think I've used any of it at work.
You're not alone - I wouldn't make a comparison between the two either, save a desire for realism in science.
In my case, I AM a woman, and I do indeed think that's part of the reason I don't really care for Heinlein. Like some authors, I can intellectually appreciate his craft, but not enjoy the sex and sexism.
Bujold, though, I adore, particularly her fantasy. Hmm, you know, there is one other thing in common in their novels, to me: some characters that are great to read about that I would never, ever want to meet.
Is that actually as much of a pain reliever as Morphine? I don't really have any, hrm, experience (not to imply you do), and somehow googling to find out seems like a poor idea at work.
I just read up a bit more about Morphine, and it's a shame it's the most powerful pain reliever used; I recently lost a friend to Cystic Fibrosis, who was attempting to put on the weight to be considered for a lung transplant, and it's a shame that his pain reliever was working against him. Morphine causes loss of apetite.
I know one of the things that convinced me not to try applying to a game company (I'm a female programmer) has to do with the rumored insane hours. I didn't know if it was true (and I still don't, really), but the idea of working long and erratic hours didn't appeal to me, no matter how much I would have loved to work on AI.
Is that common to women programmers in general? Does it keep many men out of that industry? Again, I have no way of knowing, but there's one data point.
More than the idea of reducing the quantity required, the question is whether this substance can block pain without having addictive qualities. That's a very important question, I think, and one that it seems they don't have the info on yet, because I can't imagine them leaving it out if they knew.
I can see the problem with $750 penalty for stealing a 70 cent download... isn't there some ruling that says for companies they can only "gouge" them for damages with a single digit ratio to the actual damages? So to follow that for individuals, that means the largest damages should be... 70 cents times 9... $6.30?
Just a pointless gibe about the difference between treatment of companies and individuals, I guess. Forgive me if I got some details wrong of the above information, even.
In regard to the sexual harassment, I'm not sure how the stories get so blown out of proportion. I'm a female programmer, and no one has a problem with making jokes around me that fall under reasonable limits. I suspect that if I complained about an off color joke, people would modify their behavior and life would go on. Basically, the guys don't treat the office like a locker room, and I don't care about minor things.
Now, on the other hand, it's true that the majority of my upper management are grey haired white men, with very few women represented, something that I hope will change over time.
People should go here, and read these recaps, particularly the ones for the two pieces of season opener.
Anyway, what you said about looking for a planet, and then the fleet becoming home instead reminded me strongly of a point that the recapper Jacob makes - that everyone is getting exactly what they want, in the worst possible way.
While I don't watch many videos online, YouTube would be my only choice out of those for a goodly part of the day. MySpace is blocked by our filter at work.
If you enjoy this kind of thing, I also recommend the Insultingly Bad Movie Physics page. Includes information about the bad physics that crop up all the time, and reviews of particular movies. Most recent article piece on the site? "Bioinformatics and Hollywood".
I'm not into first person shooters or driving games or single person "rpgs". I play MMORPGs, real time and turn based strategy games and some puzzle games. I have no driving need to buy any kind of console.
But for games like this or, say, DDR, you HAVE to get a console. Why not a PC version? Is it that difficult to make a version of the controller for one?
Is it that they make more money on a console version? It does seem like prices drop slower on console games, though I could be wrong in that thought.
I would say that I like a game that: a) allows you to at least play even if you aren't that skilled b) has rewards for people who have/improve skills
c) games without "real" endings. Even if there is some kind of ending (like the end of a particular round), I want a game with replayability.
I enjoy real time and turn based strategy games, mmorpgs... right now I'm playing a lot of Puzzle Pirates, which I think is a good example. I really don't care for shooters (I'm just not wired that way, I guess), nor do I care for single player "rpg" titles, most of the time.
Geeks don't roll a D20... they roll a handful of D20's along with their damage dice, all color coded, so you know that the blue ones are your first wing, the clear are your second swing, etc.
There is something about rolling a fistful of dice that cannot be matched by any computer dice roller.
... and the mentality that you lampooned there is how we end up with "pink" games, ones that are aimed by those that feel that all gamers want something touchy feely with pretty costumes and romance.
I'll go back to my real-time strategy games now, or my current passion, Puzzle Pirates. Actually, while I could be wrong (since it's just observation), it DOES seem like Puzzle Pirates attracts a higher percentage of women. Perhaps because it's an online game that doesn't have skin showing. I know that I also like the fact that while I can, I don't HAVE to dedicate at least four hours a session to play.
Oh, and if you hadn't guessed, I'm a female gamer.
IMHO, the first seven seasons of SG-1 are worth it, particularly the first four. Once you've gotten through one, though, you can decide about the rest yourself.:) Eight was the season where Richard Dean Anderson had a reduced presence. Season nine and this one are mostly horrible.
Atlantis started off a little weak it's first season, but it was very good by the end of it. The second season wasn't quite as good, but I think the currently airing third season is decent.
And, for comparison, I, too, am a huge Firefly fan. I would say that my favorite Sci-fi channel show, though, is Battlestar Galactica, and there should be enough time to catch up before Season Three starts in October. If there isn't, I've heard that they are doing a one hour summary show sometime.
Rose-Hulman is a decent size name, in private engineering college circles. I know, I went there.:)
Anyway, I'm assuming that 0 means that they submitted a design, but didn't compete. I went to their website to try to dig up if that was the case, and found that they may have been focused on Project X, where they are working on a biodiesal powered SUV. Rose is a small school (my class had 450, roughly, in its freshman year), so I suspect they have problems supporting more than one car based project. I know they used to have a very successful solar car team, but they haven't done anything in a while.
Ah-ha. I found Another Article, which suggests they had engine problems (and probably didn't finish). Ah well, maybe next year.
I was going to type out a long subject, then decided to keep it short and sweet.
Neopets is funded through advertisements (and a probably tiny amount for their premium service, but that's relatively new. I have no numbers, this is a guess.)
Ads on Neopets are: 1) Banner Ads 2) Games 3) In-Game items 4) Non-Game locations that can be visited
The only ads I've heard people complain about on the boards I visit (yes, I'm 29 and I play Neopets. Shut up.) are the banner ads, and like any other, they can be turned off with the right software.
It's an entire site with millions of users, supported this way.
The large majority of married female friends I have are married to men with whom they were friends before they started dating.
TFA says you're actually looking for both, someone "to spend time with" but then somebody else to make a baby with on the side. None of your friends have ever done anything that can be described as this? That's better? And you're translating "casual relationship" to "spend time with", when I'm most certainly not talking about casual relationships. And no, none of my friends have gotten pregnant and then went daddy shopping. The closest I can think of was a girl who was stupid right out of high school (possibly a Prom Pregnancy) who then realized her boyfriend was a jerk. And she has one of the most screwed up lives of anyone I've been close friends with.
I want my daylight savings time for one reason - so I'm not woken at an ungodly (Ungodly? unGodly?) hour when the sun rises at its earliest, and I know I would be - if the sun didn't, my husband, who is very reactive to sunlight, would be awake and that would do it.

I don't know, I found Gauntlet: Dark Legacy pretty enjoyable (ah, my poor Dreamcast), and the camera wasn't that much of an issue.
The old version (which I seem to remember playing on the Atari computer, maybe?) was certainly enjoyable, however.
