I can post as subscriber and not AC and disagree with you in part and without denigrating you personally. Models are necessary and the money spent on them is in many cases well spent. However, it should not be to the exclusion of protection. Additionally, the models are only as good as the data that is put in to them. Just this week, the publishers of a peer-reviewed research paper were forced to make significant modifications to their conclusions when a mathematician published a critique of their work. This does happen. There is definitive proof that sometimes the data sets that are used to feed the models are substantially flawed and that of course has a dramatic affect on the outcome.

Does mankind have a limited affect on climate? yes, I believe we do.

I used AirBnB a few times about 4 years ago. But I got turned off by them when they pushed their updated EULA that required me to promise that I would not be a dick to people. The word salad they used was a great deal more hipster and included phrases meant to make them look like they were the perfect little SJW's. Bottom line is that I don't need some company preaching to me that I have to behave a certain way or I can't use their product. Fine, I'll do both. I'll continue to be a nice person and I won't use their product.

Honestly though, it wouldn't bother me if AirBnB is discovered to be a social evil and ends up at the mercy of government regulation or simply goes out of business. They demonstrated a great deal of hubris with that EULA demand and if you choose to believe this survey, appear to be worse than the people they wanted to socially engineer. And I still don't miss using their product.

  9. Happiness in life for me comes from doing something for someone else. It's that simple. I take care of myself as needed to accomplish that primary task but even if it means taking out the trash for my wife or helping a co-worker track down a rogue device on our network, those admittedly small and inconsequential things matter. And after some 37 years of post pubescent understanding of that goal, I think I'm pretty flippin' happy. I would even go so far as to say this; even if doing for others doesn't lead to your understanding the meaning of life or why you're here, why not do that in the mean time. Maybe you will discover that your purpose here is to count sand. No harm comes from doing mostly good until then.

But nah, most of the people I encounter on a daily basis are clearly more interested in doing for themselves and I pity them for their loss.

My wife and I both have to work but we own cars that are easier on the gas. I'm not going to list every lifestyle change I've made in support of doing my part. I am a reasonable person when it comes to conservation and being environmentally friendly. I think man does contribute to climate change. I think we can make reasonable changes to how we live and that those changes may negate some of the issues. But I also believe that some of us are willing to throw the baby out with the bath water. Not all of the suggestions I've read for reducing our footprint are viable right now. Perhaps in the future we can (and should) revisit some of the less doable ideas. But an objection based on practicality or inability doesn't mean a person is an Earth burning ludite, lowIQ,moronic, sciencehatingidiot. That's where I get wrapped around the axle on this subject. When a nuanced opinion is categorized as being from a denier and when the mouthpiece for the message is a hypocrite. How is pretending to be rich, poor or middle class while walking down a street supposed to discover how people that are actually rich, poor or otherwise truly behave? Everyone has preconceived notions of how people in other classes behave. If you think that rich people walk with a swagger, you're going to walk with a swagger when instructed to pretend to be rich.

I get that the researchers were attempting to isolate behavioral changes based on differences in environmental circumstances but I would have been more impressed if they had actually recruited real wealthy people to put on the glasses and do the walk. Seems to me that by not doing that, they artificially influenced the actual test subjects by allowing for those subjects to exercise their own bias.

  21. Technically, I use in car navigation but only through Android Auto. The native navigation works reasonably well and does have real-time traffic as long as I'm willing to pay for the built-in data link. However, the interface for its use is woefully inadequate and thus dangerous to use unless I'm at a full stop. As a Systems Engineer, I'm of course technically savvy but I am getting a little older and I have to wear glasses now. This leads me to what might be an overabundance of caution regarding fiddling with my gadgets and "infotainment" system while I'm driving. Thus, Android Auto and voice recognition comes to my rescue.
