ok...do you want people to actually Buy Your Stuff?
this is the the marketer's dilemma. go metric or go home.
20% or so of the USA population does not like metric.
not "does not understand" nor "cannot convert"...but
Does Not Like metric...on principle. so: the seller's
decision concerns: should i go metric and lose 20% now,
or hang with what i have and keep what i have? of course,
over time, the holdouts will die off...but sellers may not
last that long, nor will shareholders understand the longterm.
since you didn't ask if was a "good" idea, here goes:
numerous tracking devices for hunting dogs are available
which will do just about what you wanted. real time locations,
on/off controls, small size (50-cents US coin).
ALL use proprietary systems and expensive batteries.
none interface with any cellphone/crackberry/etc.
but they do work well within a 12-mile range of the
receiver unit.
television did eliminate evening edition newspapers.
just like radio eliminated the "extra, extra read all
about it" extra editions. in my opinion, this is the
future of newspapers:
1. Free print editions...less pages and really just
an advertisement "teaser" for the online version.
2. Admission of liberal/etc. editorial viewpoints
and publish to that niche or demographic. forget
about being objective or even lying about it.
3. Huge reduction in staffing. elimination of
sports/weather/entertainment sections. yes, they
will "cover" them, but only as "contract" services
such as ESPN/TWC/TMZ.
well, yes. everything you posted is true to the best of my knowledge.
and spam/malware/whatever works best on people like my in-laws who
are retired, and Just Getting to Know the Internet. they are part of
the "They Can't Say/Print it if it Wasn't True" generation. they are
definitely Not Changing. what i have to do i change their system so
that it "babysits" them through their clicks and doubleclicks. even
though MS receives bad posts about: "Do You Really Want To" screens,
it has saved me lots of time, because they decide NO.
the screen on the only TV i own shows just the top half of the "crawl".
i am in the bathroom or kitchen or another channel during commercials.
personally, i am interested in What Will i see in February when the
switch happens. i'll still have my set on and the antenna up.
yes. ALWAYS have a landline. we've been through
two hurricanes and one ice storm that took down
all the power and wireless networks. POTS still rules.
even dial-up worked good enough for email.
well, of course B're Rabbit.
"please don't throw me into that brier patch."
(old USA folk tale concerning the Tar Baby)
hey....it works on the domestic front as well:
example: wife says to wash the dishes. i complain,
but do it anyway, and break a few. no more dishwashing
duties for a while. of course, she wants to buy new dishes.
i consider that the cost of doing business.
bottom line: nobody cares.
if you are not in the USA,
and you are not in the top 30 markets,
no one cares about Kansas/Arkansas/etc.
Obama got 52% of the popular vote but he
killed the Electoral College (Media Market).
it's nuttin' new. NY/LA/Houston and who cares?
bad automobile analogies work because of the familiarity of cars and the utter unfamiliarity
of computers/software/etc. to the populations addressed in the post. in other words: explaining
the unknown using the known, works....well, enough times so that it's used a lot.
for example: my daughter explains her reasoning regarding the revision of the invitation list to her birthday party as "i have more friends this week than last week." i don't need to know who said
what to whom or all the other girl gossip. it's the same with someone who just wants to know
"what services are the best to safeguard my computer from malware?"
agree with HAZ....hypermilers are the problem.
bottom line: who is Behind the super-slow Hypermiler?
a mother with a two-year-old trying to make it to the rest stop?
maybe a mother-to-be trying to make it to the hospital on time?
the superslowhypermiler is holding up EVERYone without regard
to anything or anyone else. it's all about MPG.
so selfish and so wrong.
well, yes, i do pay in cash (except for last year's airline ticket),
and i do not use toll roads (since 2002..but i paid in cash),
obviously i use that "ole internet", and i used to have cable.
my nit-pick is: cameras. just about everywhere i go, there's a
security camera or three.....so, i just assume that i am on
video while outside of my house. Google Earth's pic of my house
has me hanging up clothes on my solar-powered dryer (clothesline)
in my Spice Girls T-shirt (really good resolution, too).
us ain't ready. won't be. can't be.
here's why: $. digital TVs cost over $200.USD.
non-starter for the targeted demographic.
another why: tech skills.my mother has Never Used
the record button on her VCR. DVD? what's that?
last why: there are just too many places in the Vast USA
where there is NO ability to get affordable cable or satellite
or both....and this audience is the one Still Watching Network TV.
Main Stream Media and their TV affiliates will see double-digit-drops.
does your ISP "cap" your activity? unanticipated FCC consequences.
after 2 hurricanes and one big ice storm:
1. ALWAYS have a landline phone. it's bomb-proof.
even dialup for email is better than 8 days without.
2. Cell towers/service go down second.
3. Cable goes out first.
there's other stuff to consider, but this is a tech site.
here's the deal:
1. i'm a luddite. no IT skills. HAVE TO use a computer.
2. i can do my job and have a satisfied customer
without using anything that requires electricity.
(no phones, no lights, no motorcar...not a single
luxury...)
3. amazing, that!
4. now...i Have To fire up this laptop so my
accountant can do the voodoo she does so well.
5. bottom line: the IT people who have attempted
to "show me the light" are rude/crude/and
lacking rudimentary social/personality skills
to the point of not even speaking English.
(and the USA worries about "English first")
6. i hate to complain without at least offering
a possible solution. so here it is:
you computer IT folks: treat Real People as
you would your most prized Avatar(i did learn
something) in your most involved SIM life.
if that makes sense to you, lord 'a mercy.
will 10-year-old males pay multiple times to sit in a theater to see this movie? if so: win not: fail it's so simple.
my fav Dumb and Dumber movie quote.

space exploration is "sport" for national governments. don't "have to" do it, but do it for prestige. hey y'all...watch this!

for those Virtual People who you have Never actually met..... and you want them to know that you are dead....that's Google's job.

he just sort of disappeared. remarkable, really.
well, according to slashdot...noaa says you can't take pictures of the EARTH with clearance. the whole EARTH. Google loses.
