  1. I Own No Suitable Device on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 1

At a previous job, I had a work-provided PocketPC and was starting to get into ebooks... But I had to give it back when I left. My wife has a 12" iBook that she uses for reading ebooks, but I personally don't have anytyhing suitable. My phone is way too small and my laptop is way too big. Good PDAs are too pricey and bad PDAs aren't worth having if they're only useful for reading ebooks.

Still waiting for the perfect device, I guess.

  2. Re:Hmmm... billg said it was impossible on The Scoop on the Xbox 360's Embedded OS? · · Score: 1

I recently worked with Windows XP Embedded quite a bit. It doesn't load pieces into memory as needed... It's basically just a fully componentized version of WinXP. You go into their tool and select the components you want and it builds you a system image that has only that stuff (and it's dependencies) in it. I think the first XPE image I built was only around 200 megs on disk.

I assume that XP Home, XP Pro, XP for Tablet PCs, Media Edition, etc are all built the same way - they just choose some components from the big WinXP component database in the sky, throw them into an image, and call it "XPPro" or "XP Media Edition" or whatever.

But there are still several active codestreams, I think - XP, 2003 Server, x64, and Longhorn at the very least...

When I'm doing C# coding, Windows is by far the most productive thanks to Visual Studio.

When I'm editing video, MacOSX (iMovie) or Windows (Premiere) are the most productive. Mainly because there's nothing nearly as easy to use available for Linux.

For browsing the web, sending e-mails, using GAIM... I do all of that stuff on my Linux laptop. Oh yeah, and taking notes in meetings (Tomboy rocks).

Technically, I do all of my C# coding on the laptop too, but I use VMware to run Visual Studio in Windows. :)

I started out when I was 7 or 8 years old on a TRS-80 CoCo. I originally wanted it for the games, but my father was smart enough to see the potential for a lot more. Sure enough - when I got tired of the games, I picked up the BASIC programming manual that came with the machine and started poking around. It was a only a year or so before I was typing in programs with hundreds of lines of code from magazines and picking them apart and modifying them to make them do what I wanted.

I have no idea what to recommend in today's world, though. I have three kids and none of them have shown much interest in the computer outside of games and web surfing so far. I remain hopeful, though :) I would probably teach Python as a beginning programming language even though I rarely use it myself.

It would be nice if I could distribute the upload duties a bit instead of having 3 or 4 people downloading the same file from me all at the same time...

If WASTE could do that, I think I'd jump in with both feet 'cause from what I've read it can do everything else I would want.

I'd pay more per channel for cable if it had no advertising, no problem. Note I say per channel -- as in a la carte.

The whole problem with a la carte for cable is that if you like watching CBS, it'll be cheap because LOTS of people will pay for CBS. But if you like watching FoodTV or something, there are much less people willing to pay specifically for that channel, so it'll likely either be much more expensive or not available at all.

Without a la carte, the channels you are currently paying for and not using are subsidizing the channels you like but nobody else watches.

I tried the media library in 5 when it first came out and had a lot of crashy issues with it. A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded 5.05 and completely fell in love with the media library. I can type in anything and it searches all of the ID3 fields, the filename, and even the path the file is in! I love it!

Anyhow - the only problem I've had with Winamp 5.05 is when I want to mass update several ID3 tags. For instance, let's say I need to enter an album name for all of the files in a directory... I select the whole lot of songs and hit "file info" but Winamp pops up one window for each song instead of letting me type in the album name once and applying it to all of the selected songs. (By the way, MusicMatch's library does this just fine - but MusicMatch sucks).

Anyhow, hopefully the minor problems will still be worked out in time - they haven't said that Winamp is completely dead. Just that development will be slowing down to minor fixes and updates. I can live with that.

Anyhow, I have a Samba server sharing the files for all computers on the network, but mostly they are viewed from XBMC running on the Xbox. It can play any of my XviD files from the Tivo, Quicktime files I've downloaded from the 'net, even DVDs I've converted to XviD files with AAC audio.

Oh yeah, and it's an Xbox so I can play Xbox games on it from time to time... But it definitely spends much more time in XBMC than playing games!

Just thought I'd jump in here... Tivo used to have these same kinds of problems (jumping to live when a recording ended, starting at live when you began watching an incomplete recording, etc). It took them a long time and a lot of customers to get their software to the point it is at now. My S1 DirecTivo hasn't taken an update in over a year now and I'm really happy with the software now. But it wasn't always like that.

So what I'm saying is - I'm sure the other DVRs will get these bugs worked out eventually. But it may take a couple of years or more (like it did for Tivo).

  25. Good Book on Remoting on Advanced .NET Remoting · · Score: 1

I read this book cover to cover over a year ago when I started a .NET Remoting project and it allowed me to gracefully solve some interesting problems in our implementation. I'd definitely recommend it to someone with past RPC development experience that is getting ready to take on .NET Remoting.

There are probably other good books on the subject available now (like I said, I read this one over a year ago), but this one is definitely a winner.

For the people asking what .NET Remoting is - it's very similar to Java RMI only the framework is more extensible (thanks to features like custom client and server sinks and stuff). Also, you have the option of hosting your Remoting components inside of IIS so you get SSL encryption and stuff for free (undoubtedly at the cost of having to deal with IIS security problems :) without changing any of your code - just a couple of configuration options.
