Resistance is futile jokes happen far less than sharks with lasers. That joke is made several times a day on this site (probably because lasers are more common than cyborgs). The fact that I notice that really admits that I read far too many comments on this site but I do notice a downward trend of useful comments. When ~10 year old memes make up 10%-20% of commenting material then people who have been coming here for discussion will tend to get fed up. They will want to discourage it, or at least have a way to moderate it out of their view. The -1 with no karma effect actually isn't that bad of an idea. It doesn't punish people who are just, as you said, having light fun but also doesn't subject others who know they don't want to see it.

Of course this annoying slashcode is far more harmful to discussion than memes ever could be. Why the hell does my browser window have to jump around every time I click this textbox?

In that case we better get rid of the Troll mod. Some people seem to find trolling funny. I'm led to believe that's why they do it. There are some people here that do get sick of these old memes and feel that they harm the discussion. How many times, for instance, have sharks been mentioned in this thread? Perhaps that might have been a cute joke but not after already having to glaze over twelve other shark jokes. Although I think perhaps the "Overrated" mod option kind of covers this phenomenon.

The real problem is that you can't always go after hackers. To reuse the bank analogy if the vault had an open tunnel going all the way to North Korea then it would most definitely be the bank's job to seal it. If someone waltzes in from North Korea and steals everything there's no going after them. No one is saying don't go after hackers (well, mostly no one) but there is a higher burden of responsibility to the owners of the compromised networks. They must do what is in their power to ensure outside attackers cannot get in.

Supposedly there is some kind of representational democracy in the united states. Perhaps that should be put to use? Do you not think most people will agree that once a product is purchased it should continue to function without the grace of the producer?

It is still a licensing issue and not patent as I see it. Does anything stop them from using the BluRay spec while not using the name and not reading BluRay movies/discs as long as they are paying the patent fees (which I'm fairly convinced they already are for the most part)? There may be an issue there that I don't see but doing this would allow them to use off the shelf parts and manufacturing ie. cheaper.

So being as they specifically quoted patent fees as the issue and not licensing (perhaps them just simplifying for the masses) and the fact that they are most certainly still paying patent fees leads me to conclude that this is mostly about piracy and not patent fees. Especially since patent fees just get passed on to the consumer anyway.

How many patent fees can this avoid? They're still going to be using patented optical media technologies. They might not have to license the DVD or BluRay names but the actual technologies will be the same. This is certainly about piracy (which is well within their right). The GDROM didn't help Sega because they allowed CDROMs also but the Gamecube proprietary format did a pretty good job of stopping piracy if I'm not mistaken.

Just because two things act similarly does not mean that one copied the other. Patents are supposed to follow a certain non-obvious clause. If you sit someone from the field down and say "accomplish this task" and they do it the same way Microsoft did it's really not supposed to be patentable. The problem with software patents are that many of them are the most simple and obvious method of achieving the goal. "Innovate" does not mean go "5+5-8" instead of going "1+1".

Some things are just unpatentable and if they are patented it causes unending grief. To use the famous slashdot car analogy and give you the task to drive across town.
