  3. Re:Palm needs to get out of the HW business on More details on the Visor/Handspring (Update) · · Score: 1

Palm needs to get out of the hardware business. The real money is to be made by licensing the OS

We see this ill-informed opinion pop up in platform licensing discussions. The success of the Palm is not due to the hardware or the software, but rather the combination of the two. When hardware is a commodity (as it is with PCs) and the operating system is at or near the monopoly level (as it is with MS Windows) then it is better to be in the software licensing business. But that is not the case with Palm computing today, and it will not be the case for a long time to come.

Let's say Palm took your advice and phased out of the hardware business. Companies with competing designs would try to differentiate themselves with hardware. Palm would be faced with either stifling innovation by not supporting new ideas with the appropriate hardware, or they would be forced to support anything the hardware manufacturers produced.

[sarcasm]Look at how well Windows works with hardware. Plug and Play works seamlessly, and new configurations are a joy.[/sarcasm]

There is a lot to be said for making the whole machine. Palm is on the only course that can be successful.

  4. Re:It's the method, not the ads. on Doubleclick's Banner Ad Patent · · Score: 1

Let's not overreact. Doubleclick is not Big Brother. They may suck, but they aren't the thought police. If you are a paranoid freak, you can still make the Internet a very private and anonymous place for yourself. I, for one, do not care that doubleclick _knows_ that I bought a Kid Rock cd and a portable player. I may have to look at ads for Eminem and Dr. Dre for the rest of my life, but there are worse fates.

BTW, the economy won't crash because of impulse items and accumulated debt. Remember, Wal Mart does more business in one day than the entire Internet did in a year. This will change, but the retail economy is an elephant, and Internet sales are mere hairs on its ass.

It's like a recommendation letter which reads "You'll be lucky to get John Smith to work for you." If you're expecting a positive statement, then you want to hire this guy, but if you read it the other way, then you'll be lucky if you can get this guy to do any work.

Get a clue. This is exactly the type of story that Kubrick wouldn't touch. He carried Traumnovelle in his head for years, and who would have thought of making any Thackeray novel into a film? No offense to Card, whom I love, or Ender's Game, which I have read too many times to defend the time spent on this book, but Kubrick didn't go much for pop sci-fi. Hint: he probably wouldn't have wanted to film Starship Troopers, either.
