  3. Re:Think about it on Video Games - Lost in Translation? · · Score: 1
I would be rather reluctant to say that anime always has intracate story lines. Like domestic movies, the quality of Anime varies quite a bit. Shonen manga/anime (for boys) is dominated by mindless action and escapist romance like Love Hina, Shoujo (girls) is often either melodrama or cloying magical girl shows, i.e. Sailor Moon. (That being said, I'm a fan of cheesy melodrama and love stories) You just only hear about the good stuff. I'd also be rather unsure as to if most anime is fantasy based. Japan is rather fond of sports too, particularly baseball, and there are quite a few sports anime, Princess Nine, Slam Dunk! and many, many more. There's quite a bit of historical anime, like Grave of the Fireflies, and samurai stuff, as well as shows about everything from the game of Go to street racing.

But yeah, anime is mostly targeted toward young people and kids, Studio Ghibli stuff being an exception, kinda like Finding Nemo was.

I really don't think there's anything wrong about a predilection toward fake reality, any more than escapism. It's all fake, in the end.

I don't think it's just the current generation that looks down on "imagination," kids were getting beat up for playing Dungeons and Dragons back in the eighties. And I would definately contend that Japan has no dearth of actioney games, after all, that's where all the 2D fighters and shoot `em ups come from.

In short, we're not as different as you think, although I suppose they're a bit less adverse to extremes, like melodrama and ultra-violence. So what does it mean in terms of game ports? I have no idea, but it's much more complicated than Americans like explosions and football while Japanese like fantasy and complexity.

But yeah, manga pretty much is universally popular in Japan, I suppose in much the way that newspaper comics are popular over here.

Unfortunately many programs and especially games require you have admin access to work, i.e. The Sims (god knows why). Imagine teaching your mother to use one account for installs, and another for her email and browsing, then throw in some stuff that will only work under admin and you'll quickly see where this goes.

This is a much broader problem than merely stupid/lazy users.

I don't think the quality of "anime-style" animation has much of a reflection on the quality of anime itself. Besides, plenty of crappy anime exists, you don't see most of it because it never gets brought over to the US by distributors, and anime is doing just fine in Japan.

I think Disney's already adapted a bit of the anime look for Lilo and Stich, they do seem to have oversized eyes.

China is actually progressing quite nicely towards capitalism. There's tons of privately owned companines. I actually visited factories and busnesses owned by real living people and not the government the last time I was there. Once in a while, I thought they might be too hands off, some of the factories are pretty nasty. Multinationals are doing pretty well too, the the KFCs and McDonalds were always totally packed whenever I paid a visit. Yeah, China still has a ways to go, but at least the standard of living has been steadily improving since (in spite of?) the Great Leap Forward.

I agree, Communism doesn't work. That's why they're moving to good 'ol capitalism.

If you're working with a personal workstation, it's usualy worthwhile to use testing or unstable instead of stable. Change the references to stable in your /etc/apt/sources.list to testing. In practice, they're more than stable enough. Just don't try to do apg-get upgrade or dist-upgrade, you might break dependencies. Only apt-get the stuff you need up to date. I've never had problems with debian detecting my eepro100 though.

I haven't seen any distro that does CD burning very easily though, so the problem isn't localized to debian by any means.

Oh, that and I had to go into the forums to figure out where to install the plugin, since there wasn't any info in the documentation section...

Of course, this is a pretty minor issue for me since I don't really have too many oggs, but I can imagine this is a problem for some...

Apple's working on a PC version of iTunes as we speak. It should be out in October I believe.

A simultanious PC release of the iTunes Store probably would have led to widespread problems. (BuyMusic.com anyone?) And it would be tough to recover from the PR fallout of a disasterious launch. Better to do it right first, than fix it later (if only more companies worked this way...)

  18. CD burning on Worst Linux Annoyances? · · Score: 1
Burning CDs under linux with an IDE drive SUCKS.

Why isn't there a kernel module for IDE burners yet? I haven't seen a SCSI burner in years, but if you want your IDE burner to work, you still have to install a SCSI emulation module and mount it as a SCSI device.

It seems like there's relatively little documentation on linux CD burning, and what little is there refers to 2.2 kernels, so you can't be sure whether it's still applicable.

The command line utilities are useable, if you're knowlegeable about CD structure and SCSI. The frontends, on the other hand, are largely useless. I must have tried most of them, and they all have their share of problems, and rarely behave intuitively.

Of course, I haven't tried to burn a CD under linux in months (Nero rocks!), and things may have improved in the interim.

This is one of those times I would love to be proven wrong.
