As a dutch resident, I can only say that I welcome the fact that we are a kingdom. Not because I particularly like our royal family, but because of the horror of the alternative. We have a few important political separations in our society:
Separation of church and state
Separation of law-making and law-enforcing powers
Separation of power and representation
You won't learn the last one at school, but it is very important. We have a queen to do official openings, shake hands, etc. but she cannot make political dicisions (though technically, she has a very tiny amount of political power left)
Now the alternative. A lot of polictical parties would like to do away with our monarchy and install a president with political powers. Like the situation in Germany, France, the USA, etc. The president of the USA can declare a war. Personally. Thank goodness our queen cannot.
I gladly admit that a democratic monarchy is old-fashioned, expensive and looks like a lot of theatre. But there is hardly anything better.
So, in short, open source projects are supported by many companies that do not purely exist for one open source product. I think the term "Open Source Company" is therefore to blame here. Even Microsoft contributed to the Linux kernel, but hardly anyone would call them an open source company.
in the early days of speech recognition, I saw a demo where a sneeze was taken as a valid input word (the name of a train station). Is their implementation intelligent enough to see the difference between a nod and a hiccup?
What I would like is to use such a thing as a terminal. Use it as a screen / digitizer combination at work or at home, and to be able to use it as a separate PC when on the train. As I don't do no flash, I cannot see what OS it has and if software can be installed on it, but it could make a great, finally ergonomic, X terminal.
Real beer is not in the "Distilled class". To high percentages of alcohol would kill the fermentation organisms. That is why alcoholic substances are distilled after the fermentation to obtain higher alcohol percentages.
Like beer, fermented grain is the basis for Whiskey. So, as others pointed out, "distilled beer" is not a wrong term for Whiskey.
Well, governments have a "natural" period that is the time between elections. But I think that is a bit short. My gut feeling is that any any government that tries to force an already rejected bill into law should explain to the judge (in any decent country that has a separation between law-making and law-enforcing powers) why that government wants to abuse its power and tries to circumvent the democracy. Punishable by a verdict that the government in question is not fit to rule.
Forgive me my pessimism, but I do. Public consultations are meant to influence public opinion, not to actually ask the people anything. When the European Constitution was rejected, the politician's reaction was that they "apparently had not explained it enough", not off course that the people were in any way right. For a politician, the people are only right when they elect your party or share your exact point of view, and wrong in any other case.
Any government that proposes the same bullshit twice is out. That should have prevented the European Constitution to be forced down our throats after we rejected it firmly.
No they are not. The "tomato-catchers" are replaced. The ministers that stick their neck out and have to "take responsibility" when things go too wrong to be publicly acceptable. The layer directly below that remains, and they are the ones that make all the plans...
Well, it does make some sense. If either Microsoft or Google are trying to be nice, I check what I am being robbed of or forced to now. So it is more of a "Don't trust the bears."
